CARDINAL -- Hilda Gwennie Conlin, 88, of Cardinal, died June 6, 2003 at Winchester and District Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient for six weeks. She had been living at the Hartford Retirement Home in Morrisburg for seven months.
Born July 3, 1914 in Mountain, she was the daughter of William Brooks and the former Mary Shippe.
She married George R. Conlin on May 8, 1937 at her parents' home in Hallville, Ont. During the first years of her marriage, she and her husband operated restaurants in Winchester, Iroquois and Cardinal. In 1942 they moved to Pittston where they farmed for 34 years.
In later years they made their home in the village of Cardinal and enjoyed spending their winters in Flagler Beach, Florida.
Mrs. Conlin enjoyed being with her family, traveling and going to yard sales. She identified with St. John's United Church in Cardinal.
She is survived by her sons Larry and wife Doreen of Cardinal and Steve and wife Marjorie of RR 1, Cardinal, and daughter-in-law Beth Conlin of RR 2, Prescott, as well as eight grandchildren, Lou Anne and Robert Hamilton, Mary and Mitch Sabourin and George, David, Greg and Mike Conlin, and five great-grandchildren, Nathan, Megan and Matthew Hamilton and Ian and Jenna Sabourin.
Also surviving are her sister Elsie Simpson and sisters-in-law Ruth and Marie Brooks.
She was predeceased by her husband George Conlin, son Peter Conlin, sister May Cameron and brothers Bert and Charlie Brooks.
Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlan Funeral Home, Cardinal, where on June 9 the funeral was held, with Rev. Arlyce Schiebout and Rev. Patricia Swann officiating. Granddaughter Lou Anne Hamilton gave a eulogy and granddaughter Mary Sabourin played the organ at the funeral and sang a solo at the graveside service at South Gower Cemetery.
The pallbearers were grandsons George, David, Greg and Mike Conlin, Robert Hamilton and Mitch Sabourin. Honorary pallbearers were her great-grandsons Nathan Hamilton and Ian Sabourin.
Memorial donations were directed to the Pittston United Church or St. John's United Church, Cardinal.
Sadie Wood, 94
Sadie Kathleen Wood, 94, a retired registered nurse, died June 9, 2003 at Sherwood Park Manor.
She was born July 17, 1908, in Brockville General Hospital to James Twa and the former Julia Munro. She was raised in Brockville and graduated from the Brockville General Hospital School of Nursing in 1930.
She worked as a registered nurse, retiring many years ago. She was a member of the Registered Nurses Association.
She married Arthur Wood and lived in Greenbush, Kemptville, Kitchener and Brockville over the years.
In Brockville she was a member of the BGH Ladies Auxiliary and identified with Trinity Anglican Church.
She enjoyed knitting, stitching, handwork, helping others and raising her family.
Mrs. Wood is survived by her son Robert Wood of North Carolina and daughter Ann Heise of Kanata, as well as six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Arthur Wood, son Dales Wood, grandson Terry Wood, sister Isabel Brayton and brother Dave Twa.
Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, before the funeral there on June 12. Rev. Ron Horst of Trinity Anglican Church officiated and burial followed at Oakland Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Keith Heise, Brian Heise, Jeffrey Richardson and Doug Wood.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Hugh McAllister, 57
Hubert "Hugh" McAllister, a DuPont Canada employee for three decades, died suddenly at the family cottage in Rideau Lakes June 3, 2003, aged 57.
The fourth of 16 children, he was born in Newcastle, in the Miramichi region of New Brunswick, on July 18, 1945 to Freeman McAllister and Mary Walsh. He was raised and educated in Miramichi, graduating from St. Michael's Academy in 1962.
He then moved to Ontario, working in Elliot Lake and Timmins before settling in Brockville in 1964. He started work at DuPont Canada, Maitland that December and worked there until his death.
He married Marie Prior in St. James Chapel, St. Mary's Cathedral, Kingston, in 1967.
Mr. McAllister enjoyed cottage life, fishing, gardening, bingo and golf, visits to New Brunswick and time with his grandchildren.
His family noted his three children and six grandchildren were dear to him and that he had a major influence on their lives.
He is survived by his wife, Marie, children Melanie (Stuart), Todd (Tracy) and Kerri (Jason) and grandchildren Jessica Pittman, Bailey and Julia Miller and Aislinn, Cainnear and Keelin McAllister.
Also surviving are 11 sisters and two brothers, Diane (Mike), Freda, Anne (Gus), Janice (Eddie), Susan (Byron), Fern (Sandy), Cathy (Terry), Helen (Brian), Betty (Randy), Loretta, Theresa (Kevin), Art (Carol) and Paul (Paula) and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, a sister Mary Lawlor (Ned) and a brother in infancy.
Visitation was at Barclay Funeral Home on June 6. A funeral mass was held at St. John Bosco Church with Father Brian Price officiating. Burial followed at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.
Pallbearers were brothers Art and Paul McAllister, brothers-in-law Mike Kazamer, Terry Sommers and Byron Sherrard, and nephew Tim Lawlor. Honorary pallbearers were uncle Cleveland Steward, brothers-in-law Ned Lawlor and Brian Gibbs.
Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Audrey Hodge, 77
Audrey Kathleen Hodge, 77, died May 24, 2003 at Providence Continuing Care-St. Vincent de Paul Hospital after a one year illness.
She was born April 28, 1926, in Brockville, the daughter of Albertus James Nowlan and the former Lula Mae Moore. On November 10, 1946, she married Gordon David Hodge in Brockville.
A housewife and mother of six sons, she lived in the Mallorytown and Long Beach area for 50 years. She had recently moved to Brockville. Her special interests were playing euchre and baking.
Mrs. Hodge is survived by her sons, David and wife Adsa, James, Kenneth and wife Elaine and Norman and wife Joan, all of Brockville and Raymond and wife Donna and Ralph and wife Loreen, all of Athens. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by three brothers, Lorne Nowlan and wife Joan and Robert Nowlan and wife Susan, all of Brockville, and Ronald Nowlan and wife Mae, of Frankville, and two sisters, Orva Mallette and husband Beau of Brockville and Una Morrow and husband Gareth of Lansdowne, and many nieces and nephews.
Also surviving are her sisters-in-law Jean Nowlan and Marie Nowlan.
She was predeceased by her husband Gordon Hodge, sister Betty Lou and four brothers, Jim, Forrest, Gerald and Cecil Nowlan.
Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville on May 27. The funeral was held May 28 with Rev. Maude Parsons-Horst officiating. Burial followed at Oakland Cemetery.
The pallbearers were nephews Brent, Terry, Brian, Barry, Rodney and Wayne Nowlan. Honorary pallbearers were grandsons Gordon, Matthew and Shawn Hodge and Derek Pope.
Memorial donations were directed to the Hospice of Providence Palliative Care and the Canadian Cancer Society.
Gwen Empey, 74
NORTH AUGUSTA -- Gwendolyn Elaine Meldrum Empey died May 21, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital, surrounded by family. She was 74.
She was born July 8, 1928 in Brockville to Charles McCaw and Margaret Young and was raised and educated in the city.
Mrs. Empey worked for many years for the T. Eaton Company and at the Walker store and Statistics Canada before her retirement.
She married Roger Meldrum on August 9, 1948, and lived in the North Augusta area for the rest of her life. She was widowed in February, 1997.
She married Don Empey on September 21, 2002. The couple lived at RR1, North Augusta.
Mrs. Empey's interests included her church, where she was quite active for many years, genealogy and bowling, birdwatching and games such as Scrabble and cribbage.
She is survived by her husband, sisters Irene Jonkman of Brockville and Marjorie Meldrum (Robert) of Fort Saskatchewan and brothers Frank McCaw (Jeannine) of Prescott and Hugh McCaw (Shirley) of Lyndhurst and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by sisters Jean Graham, Esther Yanosik and Jeanette (Janet) McCaw in infancy and by brothers Charles and Robert.
The funeral was held at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel May 23 with Father Rob Arsenault officiating. Kathy Wiltsie sang How Great Thou Art. Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Martin McCaw, Roger Jonkman, Larry Jones, Bob Cuffe, Tyler Cuffe and Harold Tulk.
Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of the donor's choice.
