Benjamin Horton, 85

LANSDOWNE -- Benjamin Ford Horton, 85, of Gananoque, died August 24, 2003 at Carveth Nursing Home, Gananoque. He had been ill with Alzheimer's disease for four years.

He was born August 4, 1918 at RR 4, Lansdowne to Samuel Horton and the former Wilhelmina Webster. He was raised at RR 4, Lansdowne, and went to Dulcemaine Public School. He married Lorna Beryl Heaslip on March 9, 1940, at Lansdowne.

Mr. Horton worked as a farmer, sawmill operator, construction worker, road worker, pipeline worker and heavy equipment operator. He retired more than 15 years ago.

He enjoyed many fishing and moose and deer hunting trips to Lake Sinclair with his family and especially his (Lake Sinclair hunting) buddies. He also liked camping and gardening and was a dedicated family man.

Mr. Horton was predeceased by his wife on August 31, 1999, and by his sons Winston and Larry, as well as his brother Herbert.

He is survived by two sons, Richard L. Horton of Brockville and John Horton of Kingston, and by five daughters, Gail Badour of Gananoque, Linda Cassell of Lansdowne, Kathy Crete of Ottawa, Sue Anne Davis of Oshawa and Donna Horton of Gananoque.

Also surviving are his brother Leroy of Lansdowne and two sisters, Victoria Nuttall of Gananoque and Fanny Kenny of Kingston, 20 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Lansdowne, on August 26. The funeral was held August 27 in Lansdowne United Church, with Rev. Allister Rose officiating. Rick Lawson gave the eulogy. Burial followed at Union Cemetery, Lansdowne.

The pallbearers were Richard Lawson, Tony Battams, Randy Saunders, Mike Lynch, Paul Randall and Bruce Kelsey.

Memorial donations were made to the Alzheimer Society and other charities.

Eleanor Marlene Place, 66

Eleanor Marlene Place, 66, died July 12, 2003 at the Providence Continuing Care Centre, St. Vincent de Paul Site, with her family by her side.

She was born in Belleville on December 27, 1936, to Morley and Jessie Steenburgh. The family moved to Brockville in 1950.

She worked as a cashier at several locations in Brockville. Due to failing health, she retired from Tim Hortons in November 2002.

Her main interest in life was following her son's sporting events and then later her granddaughter's sporting events. She also enjoyed needlework, ceramics and bingo.

She is survived by her son Ray Place and wife Betty-Dawn, her granddaughter Lindsay, brother Bill Steenburgh and wife Yvonne of Coldwater, Ont. and sister Barb Stewart and husband Craig of Athens, as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her father on November 1, 1997, and her mother on June 5, 2002.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville where on July 16 a celebration of her life was held, with Pastor David Downing officiating. Her brother Bill gave the eulogy. Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.

The pallbearers were Malcolm Steenburgh, Shawn Stewart, Rick Filion, Stan Hall, Bernie Greig and Lindsay Place. Honorary pallbearers were Shirley Bissonnette and Helen Warren.

Memorial donations were directed to Hospice of Providence Palliative Care.

Robert Graham, 80

Robert Graham, 80, a retired licensed mechanic who lived in Junetown before moving to RR 4, Brockville, died of congestive heart failure at home July 2, 2003 with his family by his side. He had been ill for many months.

Born Robert William Arthur Graham on December 9, 1922, in Verona, north of Kingston, he was the son of John R. Graham and the former Nellie Cox. He went to elementary school in Verona and to vocational school in Toronto, where he studied mechanics, diesel engines and welding.

He served his apprenticeship at Lakins Garage in Harrowsmith and at William Mohrhardt Garage, on Perth Street in Brockville (now City A1 Radiator and Tire), where he became a licensed mechanic. He remained there until the death of Mr. Mohrhardt.

In the years that followed he worked as a mechanic at Steven's Farm Supply, Brockville; Fred Hunt Construction, Escott; and Armstrong Motors, Brockville.

Then he began working at Roode Bros., later Anderson Ford and Braden Ford and now Hudson Ford, remaining for about 25 years. He retired 15 years ago.

He was married to Bessie Evelyn Snyder on June 27, 1953, in the bride's home in Godfrey, Ont. They raised four children.

Mr. Graham was a member of St. John's United Church, where he served as elder, usher and counter and as a member of several church committees.

He was a people-oriented man who also served on the home and school committee at Lyn-Tincap Public School.

He enjoyed gardening, flowers, animals and nature, biking, snowmobiling, skating, square dancing, playing cards and playing crokinole. He loved his family and his home and enjoyed hosting many family reunions with his wife.

Mr. Graham is survived by his wife Bessie of RR 4, Brockville, sons James and Joseph Graham, both of Brockville, and daughters Anne Pryer and her husband Jamie and Diane Graham, all of Brockville, as well as one grandchild, Korina Graham.

Also surviving are Dave and Cathy Stewart and their children Melissa and Brittany of Kanata; sisters-in-law Theresa Graham of Harrowsmith and Doreen Graham of Wilton; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Frederick and Basil Graham and one grandson, Isaac Robert John Graham (in July 1997).

Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, on July 4 and 5. The funeral was held July 6 in St. John's United Church, Brockville, with Rev. Marion Johnston officiating. Burial followed at Oakland Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Greg Cooke, Dale Gamble, Doug Gould, Paul Kirkland, Cary Neild and John Shepherd. Honorary pallbearers were J. L. "Bus" Burns, Jim Gilbert, Orren Louch, Harold Mallory, Ray McKinley, Lorne Spicer and Leo Willie.

Memorial donations were directed to St. John's United Church and the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Regina Lake, 78

Regina Marie Lake, 78, a longtime Brockville resident, died of cancer July 3, 2003 at the Elizabeth Bruyere Health Centre in Ottawa.

She was born August 8, 1924, in Ottawa to Dermott Cauley and the former Anna Keyes and married Lloyd Lake in 1946 in Brockville.

She lived most of her life in Brockville, working at Johnston Shoes, Phillips Cables, Parke Davis and the St. Lawrence College book store. She volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital and with the children of St. John Bosco school. She also belonged to the Catholic Women's League.

Mrs. Lake enjoyed traveling; she visited the Dominican Republic in March of this year with her family.

She was predeceased by her husband Lloyd, sister Phyliss and parents.

She is survived by her son Stephen and friend Jenny Pelletier of Brockville, daughter Jennifer Casselman and husband John of Ottawa, brothers Lawrence Cauley of Brockville and Jimmy Cauley and wife Marie of Brockville and sisters-in-law Brenda and Mary Lake of Brockville.

Also surviving are grandchildren Patrick and Kristina Lake of Brockville and Justin and Meghan Casselman of Ottawa, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville. The funeral was held July 7 at St. Francis Xavier Church, Brockville, with Rev. Father Brian Price officiating. Burial followed at St. Francis Xavier cemetery.

The pallbearers were Patrick Lake, John Casselman, Randy Marvell, Robert "Bob" MacDonald, Thomas Barclay and Paul Burnham.

Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Audrey Talbot, 96

ATHENS -- Former Delta resident Audrey Talbot, 96, died July 19, 2003 at Maple View Lodge, Athens.

Born Audrey Orilla Jackson on April 20, 1907, in Plum Hollow, she was the daughter of Ormond Jackson and the former Jane Berney. She was raised in Plum Hollow where she attended public school.

For two years after her marriage to Sidney Talbot in Delta Baptist Church she continued to live in Plum Hollow. Then she moved to the Daytown district and finally, in 1929, to Delta, where she lived for the next 59 years.

She was an active member of Delta Baptist Church, was noble grand in the Delta Rebekah Lodge No. 278, and belonged to the Delta Women's Institute and the Delta Legion. She and her husband were longtime helpers at the Delta Maple Syrup Festival, and she was an honorary life member of the Beverley Seniors.

In 1988 she moved to Valley View Court in Athens and in 1995 she moved to Maple View Lodge.

She is survived by her daughter Verla Green and husband Thomas of RR 4, Brockville, and by many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Sidney on June 18, 1987, and by three brothers, Ewart (who lived in Lyn), Gerald (Rocksprings) and Ford (Donacona, Que.), and one sister, Hilda Seed (Chantry).

Friends called at the Judson Funeral Home, Athens, where on July 21 Rebekah Lodge No. 277 and sister lodges held a special service.

The funeral was held July 22 in the Judson Chapel, with Rev. Nelson Trafford, of Delta Baptist Church officiating. Burial followed at Robinson Cemetery, Delta.

The pallbearers were Wayne, Arnold, Donald and Allan Jackson and Frank and Gary Seed.

Memorial donations were directed to Maple View Lodge or charities of the donors' choice.
