SMITHS FALLS -- Norman William "Billy" McArthur, 48, of Smiths Falls, died June 29, 2003 in Junetown.
He was born in Smiths Falls July 21, 1954, to Norman Henry McArthur and the former Jean Salter. He graduated from Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute; from 1999 to 2000 he attended Willis College, where he earned the designation Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer. He was a computer technician and for the past 18 years worked as a surveyor.
He married Brenda Matthews on April 6, 1984, in Smiths Falls and identified with St. John's Anglican Church in Smiths Falls.
Mr. McArthur enjoyed watching sports, walking his dog Codie, playing cards and visiting family and friends. He also loved anything to do with computers.
He is survived by his mother Jean McArthur of Smiths Falls, father Norman McArthur, wife Brenda McArthur of Smiths Falls and three daughters, Mary Matthews-Jarvis and husband Dave of Stoney Creek, Katy Commodore and husband Scott of Smiths Falls and Laurie McArthur of Smiths Falls, as well as two granddaughters.
Also surviving are his brother Rusty McArthur and wife Charmaine of Smiths Falls and two sisters, Lisa Schultz and huband Bart of Jasper, Ont., and Norma Preece and husband Tim of Smiths Falls, as well as several nieces and nephews and his godfather Bill Salter of Brockville and his godson Kervan McArthur.
He was predeceased by his sister Marilyn McArthur, uncles Sheldon and Kervan Salter and aunt Iona King.
Friends called at the Lannin Funeral Home, Smiths Falls, where on July 3 the funeral was held, with Rev. Albert Hoppins, retired Anglican Church minister, officiating. Burial followed at the Franktown Public Cemetery, outside Smiths Falls.
The pallbearers were Scott Commodore, David Matthews, Ron Keane, Bart Schultz, Kevin Salter and Kervan McArthur.
Carolyn Ubdegrove, 51
ELGIN -- Carolyn Marie Ubdegrove, 51, of Seeleys Bay, died of cancer June 11, 2003 at Kingston General Hospital with her family by her side.
She was the eldest daughter of Harold Smith and the former Vera Langridge, and was born August 23, 1951, at the home of her grandmother Langridge on Leeds Road (Highway 15 and Lyndhurst Highway area). She attended Lyndhurst Public School and Elgin High School.
She married Melvin Ubdegrove in Gananoque on February 24, 1983. She was a member of the Anglican Church until recent years, when she joined the Free Methodist Church at Pine Grove with her husband.
She worked at Manchester Plastics in Gananoque for 30 years. She enjoyed traveling and was a strong hockey fan. She also had a good sense of humour.
Mrs. Ubdegrove is survived by her husband Mel of Seeleys Bay, her mother Vera Smith Serson, and stepchildren Colen, Colleen Perry and husband Bob, and Charlene Schaafsma.
Also surviving are her brothers John Chapman and wife Helen, Kenneth Smith and friend Terry Ann, and Eddie Smith and wife Caroline; sisters Ruby Byers and husband Kevin and Marilyn Oliver and husband Greg; sister-in-law Margaret Kosher and husband Daryl; aunts Irene Dawson and Vida Chapman, of Lyndhurst, and uncles Kenneth Langridge and wife Lorna of Calgary and Fred Langridge and wife Dorothy of Picton; cousin Francis Chapman of Seeleys Bay and several other cousins.
She was predeceased by her brother David Smith and stepfather Harold Serson.
The funeral was held June 14 at the Scotland Funeral Home, Elgin, with Pastor Jack Bradley of the Free Methodist Church officiating. Burial followed at Morton Cemetery.
Roy Hutchins, 67
Roy Francis Hutchins, a longtime Phillips Cables employee, died at his North Augusta Road home June 12, 2003 after a nearly year-long battle with cancer, aged 67.
He was born October 15, 1935 to Clifford S. Hutchins and Mary Ethel Weir in Bishops Mills to and was raised on the family farm there.
As a teenager, he worked at the RCA Victor factory in Prescott, on the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway and in the nickel mines in Sudbury. He started at Phillips Cables in 1960 where he would work for 29 years.
He married Alberta Dorothy Scott in Merrickville in 1955.
Mr. Hutchins enjoyed the outdoors and nature and looked forward to deer, moose and duck hunting, and to seeing the apple blossoms each spring.
Just before his death, he planted trees around his home so his family would think of him when they looked at the trees. His family remember him as valiant and brave in his illness.
Mr. Hutchins was predeceased by his mother and father, who died only recently at age 101 and 97 respectively, and by a sister Rena in infancy.
He is survived by his wife, Alberta, sons Barry and his wife, Cheryl, of Bishops Mills, and daughters Sharry Windsor and her husband, Bob, of Pattersons Corners, Lori Selleck and her husband, Harry, of Maitland, Connie Carr and her friend, Steve, of Algonquin, and Jodi Robertson and her husband, Steve.
Also surviving is sister Marguerite McCurdy and her husband, Dale, of Kemptville.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, where the funeral was held June 14 with Rev. Dr. Alan Bennett of Wall Street United Church officiating. The song I Believe by Diamond Rio was played during the service.
Cremation followed.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Shawn Haystead, 19
MORRISBURG -- Shawn Robert Allan Haystead, 19, died June 29, 2003 as the result of an accident at his home at RR 2, Ingleside.
He was born February 16, 1984 in Winchester to Arnold Haystead and the former Stella Robinson.
He had just graduated from Tagwi Secondary School, where he had received the Steve Thompson award, presented by Steve's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Don Thompson, in memory of their son, who had been killed. The award is presented to a graduate who during his/her years at Tagwi demonstrates determination, dedication and a positive outlook, both in and out of school.
He also received the Glen Fine Foods award, which he would have used to further his studies at the post-secondary level.
He is survived by his parents Stella and Arnold Haystead of RR 2, Ingleside; foster parents Lynda and Peter Jack of Maxville; grandmother Leila Robinson of Winchester; sister Priscilla of Long Sault and brothers Robin and wife Brenda of Brockville and Kevin and wife Melody of Kemptville, as well as nieces and nephews.
Friends called at the Parker Funeral Home, Morrisburg, on July 2 and 3. The funeral was held in Williamsburg United Church on July 4, with Rev. Sandy MacPherson officiating. Burial followed at Maple Ridge Cemetery, Chesterville.
Memorial donations to the Winchester Hospital's "Renewing the Vision" Fund will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
Tom Quigley, 70
PRESCOTT -- Retired RCA employee Thomas Joseph Quigley, 70, of Prince Street, died June 27, 2003 at Mayfield Residence, surrounded by his family.
He was born June 19, 1933, in Admaston Township, Renfrew County, to Thomas Quigley and the former Ida Lynch.
He came to Prescott in 1952 where he worked for Fraser-Brace. In 1953, he began working at the RCA Victor electronics manufacturing plant, which opened that year in Prescott. By the time he retired in 1993 he was a supervisor in the plant.
Mr. Quigley met Marion Montgomery at RCA and married her in 1957.
During the 10 years of his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and collie Sammy. He spent many hours with his granddaughters, teaching Courtney to drive and accompanying Justine to the riding stables. He and his dog were well known in Prescott where on their many walks around town he would stop to chat or offer a wave.
He enjoyed business travel with his son-in-law Jim and visited China, England and Texas. Other vacations took him to Arizona, Nevada, Utah and many places in Canada. He visited his boyhood home in Admaston regularly.
He taught himself to play the fiddle at a very early age and he continued playing as an adult, entertaining family and friends at special gatherings.
Mr. Quigley is survived by his daughters Cathy Cooper and husband Jim of Maitland and Sharon Quigley of Prescott, granddaughters Courtney and Justine Cooper, sisters Louella Quinn and husband Carmen of Cobden, Margaret Munhall and husband Martin and Pat Gallagher and husband Clayton, all of Renfrew, and brother Jim Quigley and wife Leila, of Renfrew.
Also surviving are four sisters-in-law, Darlo Lewars and husband Jim, Mae Grant and friend Floyd Dixon, all of North Augusta, Jean Harris and friend Duncan Campbell of Kemptville and Joyce Marshall and husband John of Florida, and two brothers-in-law, Max McCallum of Prescott and Harry Grant of Cardinal, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Marion, father and mother Thomas and Ida Quigley, and parents-in-law Clifford and Dorothy Montgomery.
Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, on June 29. The Mass of Christian Burial was held June 30 in St. Mark's Catholic Church, followed by burial at St. Mark's Cemetery.
The pallbearers were nephews Michael and Brian Knapp, Blain and Blair Harris, Jeff Grant, Mark Lewars and friend Gary Pitkin.
Memorial donations were made to the Canadian Cancer Society and Mayfield Retirement Residence, Prescott.
