PRESCOTT -- Patricia Mary Evelyn Kinch, 75, of RR 3, Prescott, died June 27, 2003 at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital.
She was born January 31, 1928 in Brockville to Patrick Burns and the former Evelyn Kearney. She married Donald Thomas Kinch on November 27, 1954 in St. Mark's Catholic Church, Prescott, and became a homemaker. She had a number of interests, particularly the Catholic Women's League at her church.
Mrs. Kinch is survived by her daughters Mary Evelyn Kinch and Norah Morton and husband Steven, son Thomas Kinch and wife Vanessa, and grandchildren Henry and Michael Morton and Jonathan and Amanda Kinch.
Also surviving are her sisters-in-law Dorothy Dove and Pearl Byrnes, cousins Isabel Potter and Jean Moore, and other cousins, and brother-in-law Joe Byrnes of North Augusta.
She was predeceased by her husband Donald Kinch on January 4, 1985.
Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, on June 30. The Mass of Christian Burial was held July 1 at St. Mark's Catholic Church, with Father John Appelman officiating. Burial followed at St. Mark's Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Rene Lafontaine, Wayne and Joe Dove, Steve Morton, Ted Burns and Bernard Burns.
Memorial donations were directed to Hospice of Providence Palliative Care, St. Vincent de Paul Hospital.
Sheila Mathieu, 51
ATHENS -- Sheila Mathieu, 51, formerly of Athens, died of cancer at her Nepean home on June 24, 2003.
She was born March 13, 1952, in Brockville to Sterling Halladay and the former Rena Whitmore. She was raised and educated in Athens and married Gilles Mathieu on May 23, 1978, in Brockville.
Mrs. Mathieu lived in Nepean and worked as a hair dresser in Ottawa. She identified with the Anglican Church. Her main interest was her family, but she also enjoyed decorating.
She is survived by her husband Gilles, mother Rena Halladay, son Mark Mathieu of Nepean and daughter Anne Mathieu of Ottawa, a grandson Austin, brothers Rick Halladay of Athens and Andy Halladay of Arden, Ont., and two sisters, Kathy Peters of Windsor and Linda Cole of London, Ont., as well as five nieces and five nephews.
Also surviving are sisters-in-law Tammy and Marlene Halladay and brother-in-law Tony Peters.
She was predeceased by her father, Sterling Halladay.
Arrangements were made through Hulse and Playfair Funeral Home, Ottawa. The funeral was held June 30 at Holy Trinity Church, Oak Leaf, with Pastor Laurence Croswell, of Centennial Road Standard Church, Brockville, officiating.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Margaret Scott, 45
Margaret "Marg" Eileen Scott died of cancer June 21, 2003 at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital surrounded by her family.
She was born in Brockville February 5, 1958, to Sydney Cummings and the former Eileen Fox. She attended Prince of Wales Public School and Thousand Islands Secondary School.
On September 24, 1977, she married David Scott and they had two sons.
Her life centred on her family, of which she was extremely proud. Her other interests included knitting, reading, crafts, flowers and travel. She enjoyed spending time visiting with friends and family, always with a smile and a positive outlook. She worked at St. Lawrence Lodge over the past 13 years.
Mrs. Scott is survived by her husband David Scott and two sons, Jason of Alberta and Matthew at home. Also surviving are her brothers David Cummings and wife Catherine of Kingston and Thomas Cummings and wife Elizabeth of Athens, as well as nephews Travis and Brennan and niece Janine Cummings.
She is survived by her mother-in-law Eileen Scott-Kerr and her husband Don of Lyn and brothers-in-law Doug Scott and wife Marla of Lyn and Chris Scott and wife Lauren of Kingston, as well as nephews Douglas, Chad and Layne Scott and Jake and niece Jade Scott.
Also surviving are her stepsister Susanne Jeffery and her husband Andrew and their daughters, of England, and stepbrother David Kerr and his wife Laurie and their daughter, of Kingston.
She was predeceased by her parents Sydney and Eileen Cummings and her father-in-law Bernard Scott.
Frieds called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where the funeral was held June 24, with Rev. Maude Parsons-Horst officiating. Tim Ross, Chris Scott and B. J. Timmons participated in the service. Burial followed at Old St. Peter's Cemetery, just west of Brockville.
The honorary pallbearers were Travis and Brennan Cummings, Douglas Jr. and Chad Scott. The pallbearers were Doug Scott, Chris Scott, Gerry Doherty, Don Create, Ken Knapp and Keith Mott.
Memorial donations were directed to the Hospice of Providence Palliative Care and other charities of the donor's choice.
Alida Kleiboer, 88
PRESCOTT -- Alida Kleiboer, 88, died June 22, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.
She was born April 17, 1915 in Apeldoorn, Holland, to Herman Telgen and the former Gerritje Mulder. She married Johannes Kleiboer in Holland in 1935.
She stayed at home as a housewife and her family was her main interest.
Mrs. Kleiboer is survived by five sons, Joe and wife Claire, Gerry and wife Helen, Herman and friend Sally, Tony, and Brian and wife Ellen, and one daughter, Anne Jones and husband Barry, as well as 18 grandchildren, Debbie, Cindy, Patricia, Stephen, David, John, Jane, Julia, Kristen, Kara, Katrina, Kirk, Kyle, Jennifer, Sarah and Michael Kleiboer and Leslie and Jonathan Fenton, and seven great-grandchildren, Brittany, Dustin, Bradley, Tia and Daelan Kleiboer and James and Amber Hughes.
She was predeceased by her husband in June 1979 and by her parents, brothers Johannes, Everett and Herman Telgen and daughter-in-law Sue Kleiboer.
Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, on June 26. The funeral was held in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Prescott, on June 27, with Rev. Ian MacLean officiating. Burial followed at Sandy Hill Cemetery, Prescott. The pallbearers were her five sons and her daughter.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Michael Joyce, 36
PRESCOTT -- Michael John Joyce, 36, died at his home September 26, 2003, where he had lived most of his life.
He was born December 10, 1966, in Brockville to Michael F. Joyce and the former Marion L. Thorpe.
He worked as a gas station attendant. His main interests were spending time with his mother until her death at 66 in 2002 and helping decorate the home for Christmas, inside and out.
He is survived by his sister Sandra Joyce and fiance Brent Coville, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents.
Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, on October 3. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mark Catholic Church on October 4 with Father John Appelman officiating. A committal service followed at St. Mark's Cemetery, Prescott.
The pallbearers were Craig Rayvals, Rob Joyce, Joe MacDonald, Mike Shanahan and Larry and Art Joyce.
Shirley Beerda, 95
ATHENS -- Sjoukje "Shirley" Beerda, 95, died March 30, 2004 at Maple View Lodge, Athens.
She was born in Zwaagwesteinde, Friesland, Netherlands, on January 17, 1909. Her parents were Daniel Vander Meulen and Gaatske Nicolai. She grew up in the Netherlands and married Julle Beerda on August 13, 1936 in Bergum, Friesland, Netherlands.
She came to Canada with her family in 1950 and lived first in Prescott (1950-52), then Athens (1952-64), then Greenbush (1964-71) and finally Athens, 1971 to 2004.
She was a member of Athens Christian Reformed Church and the Athens CRC Ladies Society.
For many years she volunteered at Maple View Lodge, teaching crafts and ceramics to the residents. She was talented at sewing, embroidery and needlework and had given many such gifts to family and friends. She donated a framed embroidery, "Peace on Earth, " to the Community Christian Reformed Church at Dixons Corners, when its congregation opened its new church in 1990. It now hangs above the entrance to the sanctuary.
On November 9, 2003, she handed the keys to the owners of the Habitat for Humanity house in Athens that was built on a three-acre lot she had donated.
She enjoyed watching birds at her feeder behind the house and she loved gardening. A profusion of flowers surrounded her home and she grew fresh vegetables and winter supplies.
Always close to her family, she enjoyed several reunions held in Canada, Holland, Alberta and California. She looked forward to visits from her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, making many gifts of jam, cookies, applesauce and needlework while she was able.
Mrs. Beerda is survived by two sons, Peter Beerda and wife Rita of Dorchester, Ont., and Tom Beerda of Athens, and four daughters, Jessie Reuvers and husband Henk and Gail Bouwers and husband Henk, all of Athens, Danella Beerda-Morgan, and Theresa Zandbergen and husband John of Brinston, Ont. Also surviving are 28 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two sons-in-law, Harold Westendorp and wife Ann of Brockville and Henry Smid and wife Sally of Athens.
She was predeceased by her husband Julle on July 5, 1995; daughter Gaatske (in Holland); daughters Susan Westendorp and Jane Smid; three brothers, Lieuwe Vander Meulen (who lived in Barrhead, Alta.), Pieter Vander Meulen (Redwood, Calif.) and Andries Vander Meulen (Holland); two sisters, Jitske Viersen and Tryntje Wind (Holland); and son-in-law Mike Morgan.
Friends called at the Judson Funeral Home, Athens, on April 1. The funeral was held April 2 at Athens Christian Reformed Church, with Rev. Gary Van Leeuwen officiating. Burial followed at Glen Elbe Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Harold Westendorp, Frank Smid, John Bouwers, Craig Rosborough, Vincent Beerda and Gary Reuvers.
Memorial donations were directed to the Christian Reformed Church Building Fund and Athens Christian School.
