PRESCOTT -- Larmour Hiram Robert Stephenson, 65, owner of Lane's Smoke Shop, died August 2, 2003 at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital. He lived at RR 2, Prescott.
Born January 17, 1938, in Domville, he was the son of Larmour Stephenson and Marguerite Coville. He married Edna Fraser on September 27, 1958, at the Anglican Church in Prescott, with Rev. Fred Payne officiating.
As a young boy he sang with his sister Doris on the Brockville radio station on a show called The Happy Gospel. At 15 he started delivering for the Prescott Dairy, Coca Cola and Wonder Bread. He then started his own delivery business, LSD Delivery, which he operated for several years.
Then he bought a hotel in Eganville which he operated for five years before purchasing Lane's Smoke Shop. He owned and operated the smoke shop for 30 years, until illness forced his retirement this past May.
Mr. Stephenson was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 97 in Prescott. His interests along with his store and his family, especially his two granddaughters, included donating to and raising funds for local sports, clubs and charities.
He is survived by his wife Edna, son Lloyd and wife Bonnie and granddaughters Krista and Dana.
Also surviving are his sisters, Doris Stephenson, Dora Steele and husband John and Carolyn Forsyth and husband Garfield, and his brothers Albert and wife Dorothy and Danny and wife Jennifer, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and a brother Sammy.
Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, on August 4, when there was a Legion remembrance service. The funeral was held August 5 in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor David Downing officiating. Burial followed at Maynard Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Clayton Paquette, Lorne Dougherty, Garfield Forsyth, Bob Steele, Jim Lewars and Rene Villeneuve.
Memorial donations were made to Hospice of Providence Palliative Care, St. Vincent Site, and the Canadian Cancer Society.
Pat Alberry, 69
ATHENS -- Silas "Pat" Elias Alberry, 69, of RR 1, Addison, died August 14, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.
He was born January 30, 1934, in the Township of Augusta to Alonzo and Edna Alberry. He was raised and educated in the North Augusta area.
Mr. Alberry ran his own business, Seaway Valley Pump Services. He was also employed with Tackaberry Construction for 12 years. He retired four years ago.
A member of the Masons, he enjoyed gardening, farming, birds, going to yard sales and collecting brass salt and pepper shakers. He loved to visit with friends.
He is survived by his wife, the former Betty May Bigalow, whom he married December 19, 1987, in Brockville's First Presbyterian Church.
Also surviving are his son Bruce Alberry and wife Diane of Frankville, sister Isabel Hart of Rideau Ferry, two grandchildren and stepdaughter Linda Abdalla of Kingston, stepson Brett Dillabough of Brockville and stepgrandson Malic Abdalla of Kingston.
A graveside service was held August 19 at Maynard Cemetery, with Rev. Jack Bradley officiating.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Joyce Carbery, 69
Joyce Marie Carbery, 69, retired registered nurse, died August 20, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital. She had been ill for a week and died of heart failure.
She was born October 11, 1933, in Upper Kent, New Brunswick, to Hazen Perry and his wife, the former Grace Oakes. She came to the Brockville area in 1950 and married William "Bill" Carbery in September 1956 in Brockville.
Mrs. Carbery worked as a registered nurse until her retirement August 13, 1983, after an accident.
She loved to play golf and was a member of the Brockville Country Club. She was also a very active volunteer with the General Hospital Auxiliary. She also enjoyed playing bridge.
She is survived by her husband Bill Carbery, sons Paul and wife Sue of Brockville and Bruce of Gananoque, and two grandchildren Samantha and Nickolas Carbery.
Also surviving are her brother Ron of RR 1, Brockville, numerous nieces and nephews, and sisters-in-law Toots Wylie, Ruth Webster and Crista Perry, with whom she was very close.
She was predeceased by her parents.
Arrangements were made through the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, a private service was held and burial was to be at Roselawn Memorial Gardens at a later date.
Memorial donations to the Brockville General Hospital Auxiliary were gratefully acknowledged by the family.
Katharine Kennedy, 88
LANSDOWNE -- Katharine Mary Kennedy, 88, of Escott, died August 8, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital. She had been ill for four years after suffering a stroke.
Born at Sydenham, on May 16, 1915, she was the daughter of Edward Kelly and the former Mary Isable Groomes. She married Patrick Kennedy on August 20, 1949 in Sacred Heart Church, Bedford, southeast of Westport.
She began her teaching career in Bedford and later taught in Petworth and Fish Creek. She moved to Escott to teach in Holland Road School and then, in 1967, moved to the new school in Escott. She taught for 40 years in all.
A member of St. Brendan's Church in Rockport, she belonged to the Catholic Women's League (CWL) and had received her 50-year pin. Her main interests were her family and school.
Mrs. Kennedy is survived by her son William Kennedy and his friend Denise and by her daughter Jo-Anne Donovan and her husband Bernard, as well as eight grandchildren, Kevin, Kelly and friend Mike, Sarah, Katie, Amanda, Jennifer, Jeffrey and Nicholas.
Also surviving are her sisters Mary Kenney of Elgin and Lenore Kelly of Mallorytown, brother-in-law Corneilius Kennedy and wife Marge and sister-in-law Patricia Kennedy.
She was predeceased by her parents; three sisters, Rita and Sarah Kelly in infancy and Marjorie Coulter and husband Joe of Bedford; brother Bill Kelly in infancy; and brother-in-law Jim Kenney of Elgin.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Lansdowne, on August 11, where members of the CWL recited the Rosary. The funeral was held August 12 in St. Brendan's Church, Rockport. Father Jacob Chelamootil celebrated the mass, with Father Aleman assisting. Nephew Robert Coulter of Stoney Creek gave the readings. Burial followed at Rockport Cemetery.
The active pallbearers were Jim Kellar, Gordon Hunt, Jim Jobson, Joe Chisamore, Bert Lynch and Kevin Donovan. The honorary pallbearers were Earl Waldron, John Reid, Robert Lynch, Francis Reid and Joe Donovan.
Doreen Ward, 79
Doreen Ward, 79, retired from the Leeds and Grenville County Board of Education, died July 21, 2003 at Providence Continuing Care Centre, St. Vincent Site, Brockville.
She was born November 22, 1923, near Bradford, Yorkshire, England, to Arthur Tordoff and the former Alice Whalley. She was raised and educated in the Bradford area.
She met Bill Ward while joyfully celebrating VE Day on May 8, 1945, during the Second World War. They were married January 6, 1946 in Cambridge. They lived in Cambridge and later Lowestoft, where Mrs. Ward owned and operated a bed and breakfast place for several years.
In 1961 they emigrated to Canada and settled in Brockville, where she worked for many years with the board of education. On evenings and weekends she also assisted her husband at the fish and chips shop they opened in 1975 in Kensington Plaza to introduce English style fish and chips to Brockville.
Shortly thereafter they sold the fish shop and Mrs. Ward took early retirement from the school board. She and her husband bought a grocery store in Athens and spent their last working years there and at their cottage on Charleston Lake.
Since then, they spent winters in warmer climates, the last 12 in Winter Haven, Florida, where they made many good friends.
When she was diagnosed with cancer in May 2002, Mrs. Ward decided there was a lot of living still to be done and over the next 12 months she and her husband travelled to some of their favourite vacation destinations with family and friends, including one last winter in Florida.
Mrs. Ward is survived by her husband William "Bill" Ward, daughters Linda McLennan and husband Bob and Judith Ann Bakker, all of Brockville, and five grandchildren, Shannon Mann and husband David, Ryan Jenkinson, Amy Bakker and fiance Stephen Szewczuk, Jill Bakker and fiance Bradley Murdock and Andrew Bakker. Also surviving are her sister Barbara Mitchell and husband Tom of Brockville.
She was predeceased by her parents, brother Norman Tordoff and sister Vera French.
The funeral was held July 24 in the Irvine Funeral Home Chapel, Brockville, with Rev. Geri Johnston officiating. A video of her life was shown. The pallbearers were Ryan Jenkinson, Andrew Bakker, Andrew Mitchell, Keefe Hood, Brad Murdock and David Mann. Burial was at Roselawn Memorial Gardens on August 1.
Memorial donations were made to the Hospice of Providence Palliative Care at the St. Vincent Site and to the Canadian Cancer Society.
