Virginia Saunders

PRESCOTT -- Virginia Mary Saunders, 85, died August 6, 2003 at Wellington House, in Prescott.

She was born January 31, 1918 at Ogdensburg, N.Y., to Eldric Boismenu and the former Clara Graham. After finishing school, she worked as a printer at Rasbacks Photo Studios in Ogdensburg.

On January 31, 1939, she married Elmer "Babe" Saunders in St. Mark's Catholic Church, Prescott. She stayed home as a housewife and mother.

She belonged to St. Mark's Catholic Church in Prescott. Her main interest was her family, but she was also an avid reader and enjoyed writing poetry.

She is survived by her husband Elmer, daughters Diane McAuley and husband Les and Mary Clare "Cissy" LeBlanc, son Danny Saunders and wife Barb, 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are her brothers Edwin and Ronald Boismenu, sister Carol Montroy and several nieces and nephews.

Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, on August 8. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mark's Church on August 9, with Father Rob Arsenault of Spencerville officiating. The committal service followed at St. Mark's Cemetery, Prescott.

The pallbearers were Brett and Michael Boismenu, Andre, Pat and Phillip LeBlanc and Jason Saunders.

Memorial donations were made to Wellington House Palliative Care.

Marguerite Baker, 92

Marguerite Anna Baker, 92, a resident of Brockville, Chicago and Prescott, died July 13, 2003 at Wellington House, Prescott. She had broken her hip in June.

Born at Brockville General Hospital May 10, 1911, she was the daughter of Charles Roy Earle and the former Adalene Charlotte Hodges. She attended Prince of Wales School and Brockville Collegiate Institute.

After her father died, her mother remarried George Dyke of Chicago. The family moved there until Mr. Dyke died as a result of a car accident in 1934, when they returned to Brockville, living on Cedar Street.

Before her marriage, she worked as a switchboard operator for the Bell Telephone Company on Apple Street, Brockville. She also worked as a seamstress for Clarence Babcock Furnishings; at Harry Olsen's Homemade Candy Shop; and, after her own children were grown, as a babysitter for many families.

On July 25, 1936 she married Joseph Henry Baker at Trinity Anglican Church, Brockville. They lived at 63 Church Street until 1956, when they moved to a new home at 63 Stewart Boulevard, built on the Baker family farm property (originally owned by Charles and Matilda Baker, at the north end of William Street). She remained in her home after her husband died in 1983 until she moved to Wellington House in Prescott in 1998.

Mrs. Baker was an active member of Trinity Anglican Church and its altar guild and Anglican Church Women and belonged to the quilters guild. For many years she drove cancer patients to Kingston.

"Mrs. B, " as she was known to many, enjoyed the outdoors, swimming, canoeing, skating and snowshoeing in her younger years. She was a great supporter of the Brockville Hunt Club, the hunters and their wives.

She and her husband hosted many parties for their family and friends, both at their cottage and home. They spent many winters at their trailer in Lakeland, Florida.

She had the ability to put both young and old at ease and will be remembered for her generosity and selflessness, for laughter and fun and for her love of her family.

Mrs. Baker is survived by two daughters, Margie Mulvihill and her husband Peter of Lyn and Nancy Jonkman and husband John of Brockville; five grandchildren, Matthew Mulvihill and wife Laura, Amy Durant and husband Dan, Sarah Mulvihill and Joseph and Christopher Jonkman; and great-grandchildren Katie and Samuel Mulvihill and Dillan Durant.

Also surviving are her brother Jack Hodges Earle and his children Lynda Schaub and husband Peter, Mary Rivett, Rose Peterson and husband Kenton and Anna Green and husband Blake, and their families.

She was predeceased by her husband Joe and in February 2003 by her sister-in-law Helen Earle.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, on July 15. The funeral was held July 16 at Trinity Anglican Church, Brockville, with Rev. Ron Horst officiating. During the service, tributes were given by close family friend Morna MacOdrum Parker and her daughter Margie. Burial followed at Oakland Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Peter and Matthew Mulvihill, John Jonkman, Dan Durant, Peter Schaub and Al Cinnamon.

Memorial donations were directed to Trinity Church and also received by Hospice of Providence Palliative Care, Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Diabetes Association and Baker's Park in Brockville.

Jessie Fulton, 90

Jessie Black Fulton, 90, died suddenly of an aneurysm July 28, 2003 at Port Perry Hospital.

She was born on September 28, 1912 at Metcalfe, in Osgoode Township, the daughter of Peter Anderson and the former Barbara Shepherd, who were from Lonmay, Rathen Parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

She attended schools in Osgoode Township and North Augusta. She trained as an Argyle nurse at the Montreal Foundlings and Children's Hospital and cared for many children in her career.

During the Second World War, she served with the Women's Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

She married Edward Fulton on February 4, 1950 in Brockville. They lived in Algonquin from 1950 to 1977, then moved to Brockville. In 1983, due to her husband's failing health, they moved to Pickering to be near their daughter Cathi Skura, her husband Jim and only grandchild Alan. For the past 17 years she lived in her own apartment in Whitby.

Mrs. Fulton was a member of the United Church Women group in Algonquin. She enjoyed traveling, sunsets, nature, gardening, cards, bingo, knitting, crocheting and driving her husband to his favourite fishing places.

She is survived by her daughter Catharine Skura and husband Jim, grandson Alan and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her son Ian David Fulton and grandsons Glen Edward and Jordan James Skura, and all 13 of her brothers and sisters.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, where on July 31 the funeral was held, with Rev. June Craig officiating. Burial followed at Bissell Cemetery in Algonquin.

The pallbearers were Alan Skura, Tom, Duane, Jamie and Josh Forsyth and Ron Davis. Honorary bearers were Cor Roobol, Milford Brown and Jim Skura.

Marian Dowsley, 95

PRESCOTT -- Marian Corabell Dowsley, 95, an artist, died August 10, 2003 at Mayfield Residence, Prescott.

She was born November 17, 1907, in Hamilton (Barton Township) to David Ayers and the former Lucy Kindon. She was raised in Stoney Creek, Ont. on a farm. In 1921, when she was 14, the family moved to Prescott, where her father had accepted a position with Newell's Manufacturing Company as an electroplater.

She attended Prescott High School and after graduating took courses at Brockville Business College. She was employed by the Bell Telephone Company in Prescott as a telephone operator for about four years. Her next position was with the post office in Prescott until her marriage to John Dowsley on June 17, 1943 in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Prescott.

Mrs. Dowsley was a regular attendee of St. Andrew's and became an active member of the Eliza Dowsley Women's Auxiliary.

She was a gifted artist; her oils were exhibited in her church and many were sold privately. She taught art in her home on Zaire Street to private students in the 1960s.

She was an avid reader, had a great sense of humour and loved jokes and limericks. She enjoyed playing bridge and belonged to a bridge club that met weekly.

In 1983 she and her husband sold their house on Zaire Street and moved to an apartment in Prescott Place. In the summer of 1997 she moved to Mayfield Residence.

She is survived by her son Robert Dowsley and wife Sheila of Picton and daughter Dorothy and companion Barry Rhodes of Ottawa, and grandchildren Douglas, David, Bill and Angela Glasgow, Lyndy Foote and Les Cummings.

Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, where on August 13 the funeral was held, with Rev. Ian MacLean, St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, officiating. The pallbearers were grandsons David and Doug Glasgow. Burial followed at Sandy Hill Cemetery.

Marion St. Pierre

WILLIAMSBURG -- Marion St. Pierre, 77, of RR 1, Inkerman, died August 21, 2003 at Winchester Hospital.

She was born January 30, 1926 in Crysler to Ranald Murphy and the former Olive Miller. She married Keith St. Pierre on June 30, 1948 in Iroquois United Church and became a homemaker.

She enjoyed watching equestrian competitions, horse racing, hockey and baseball on television.

Mrs. St. Pierre is survived by her son Carson and his wife Anne of RR 1, Inkerman, grandchildren Karla, Willie and David and great-grandchildren Travis, Jordan and Ashley, as well as her sister Alice Dennis of Brockville and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, sister Stella Larabee and brother Terry Murphy.

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlan Funeral Home, Williamsburg, where on August 25 the funeral was held, with Rev. Sandy Macpherson officiating. Burial followed at Iroquois Point Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Graham House, Keith Barkley, Adam Hill, Glen Whitteker, David Lapier and Roger Tupper. Honorary pallbearers were Leo, Duane, Ralph, Roy and Bryce St. Pierre.

Memorial donations were directed to Winchester Hospital or the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre.
