Randall "Randy" Edwin Dowell, 52, a well-known local businessman, died of cancer at Brockville General Hospital on October 10, 2003.
Born in Chicago, Illinois on December 27, 1950, he was the son of William Barry Dowell and his wife, the former Diane Constance Krohn. During the first year of his life, his parents moved to the family residence (CWAYVU) on Hartley Street, where his grandparents also lived. He lived 48 years of his life at this home.
He attended Prince of Wales School, Brockville Collegiate Institute and the University of Western Ontario.
During his early years, he was active in swimming lessons and life guarding at the Brockville Rotary Pool and St. Lawrence Park. He was a member of the Brockville Sailing Club, a ski instructor here in Brockville with the YMCA and a member of the Brockville Power Squadron.
Shortly after university and following the death of his father, he took over Rollit Products Ltd., in Brockville, and was active in its subsidiary company, Briarmeer Pipes Ltd. Rollit is known today as Intech Precision Ltd.
Mr. Dowell was dedicated to his company, even to the last days before his death.
Rollit Products Limited was a family owned company founded by his grandfather, the late Edwin George Dowell, in 1947. The company manufactured and marketed Canada's first ballpoint pen. In later years it diversified to manufacture precision screw machine products, Daylite Projection Screens, the Rollit smoking pipe and the Briarmeer smoking pipe.
He is survived by his former wife, Susan Ellen Layfield Dowell, of Prescott, whom he married on August 8, 1986, and by his brother, Jeff Dowell, of Brockville.
Mr. Dowell was predeceased by his father, Barry Dowell, in 1975 and his mother, Diane Dowell, in 2001; his grandfather, Edwin Dowell, in 1987 and his grandmother, Helen Beatrice Dowell, in 1984.
A memorial service was held at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, on October 16, with Rev. Myra Garvin, of St. John's United Church, Brockville, officiating. Chris Moar read a brief biography.
A private burial service will be held at a later date at the Oakland Cemetery, just west of Brockville.
Memorial donations were directed to the Humane Society and Hospice of Providence Palliative Care.
Geraldine Mizener, 80
Gerry Mizener, 80, a Brockville homemaker, died October 15, 2003 at St. Lawrence Lodge.
She was born Geraldine Joyce Vail on January 30, 1923, in Sutton, Que., to Harold Vail and the former Winnifred Wilson. She was raised and educated in Knowlton, Que., attending high school there and helping on the family homestead.
In February 1945 she married John Lawson Mizener in Montreal West and they moved to Brockville that year.
She was a member of Christ United Church, Lyn, and was a foster mother to 11 children over the years. She loved to travel, knit and help others.
Mrs. Mizener is survived by her husband John; two sons, Arthur P. Page and wife Mary-Ellen of North Bay and Shawn Fodey and wife Shelley of Ottawa; and two daughters, Connie Talmage and husband John of San Francisco and Mary Lane and husband Doug of Brockville. She leaves seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a twin brother Gerald and a brother Don.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on October 17 the funeral was held, with Rev. Jean Baker officiating. Burial was at Roselawn Memorial Gardens on October 24.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society and Christ United Church, Lyn.
Margaret Mosley, 85
PRESCOTT -- Margaret Isabell Mosley, 85, died October 20, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital. She had recently been a resident of the Mayfield Retirement Residence in Prescott.
She was born to Fred and Lena Scheel on September 21, 1918 in Arnprior, where she grew up. She married Elwin "Smitty" Mosley in Arnprior on April 9, 1941. They moved to the Johnstown area and lived there more than 55 years.
Mrs. Mosley was a housewife and mother. She was the organist at the Baptist church in Prescott, belonged to the Women's Institute and enjoyed curling. She was always ready to help her neighbours.
She is survived by her daughter Nancy Davidson of Johnstown, granddaughter Pam Davidson and friend Darren Bazilsky, grandson Kevin Davidson, great-grandchildren Connor and Jake, and son-in-law Richard Davidson.
She was predeceased by her husband Elwin Mosley and her parents.
Her funeral was held October 23 in the chapel of the Boyce Funeral Home, Arnprior, with Pastor Mark Kennedy, of First Baptist Church, Arnprior, officiating. Isabel Swant gave the eulogy. Burial followed at Arnprior Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Debbie Fraser, Wendy Hammond, Stephanie Townsley, Darrell Streight, Kevin Davidson and Darren Bazilsky.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society and Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Arrangements were made through the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott.
Sarah Emily Howe, 81
ATHENS -- Sarah Emily Howe, 81, of RR 2, Lyn, died October 14, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.
She was born March 28, 1922, in Frankville to Alex Morrison and his wife, the former Gertrude Kinch. She attended Soper's School, near her home.
On August 15, 1940, she married William Howard "Bill" Howe in the Frankville United Church parsonage. Their first daughter was born at the Morrison homestead in July 1941. They moved to Kingston where Mr. Howe served in the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders. Following his discharge, the family moved to the Howe homestead at Rocksprings, where a second daughter was born.
She attended Glen Buell United Church, was a Sunday school teacher and belonged to the United Church Women group.
Mrs. Howe moved to Lyn in 1943, where she and her husband had purchased the Billy Davis farm. There they lived until their deaths, raising a family of 10 children. She worked hard on the farm.
She cared about people and always had a cot made up and a dish of food for travellers on the Brockville and Westport Railroad. She always believed people should have a roof over their heads and food in their stomach and should know that someone cares.
She and her husband always took Friday nights off for themselves and went out for a hamburger and a show at the old Regent Theatre in Brockville.
As the children left home, she started working at the Sunnyview Restaurant on Highway 29.
She was a member of Christ United Church, in Lyn. She took time out from the farm and travelled to Dollywood near Knoxville, Tenn. She liked going for drives in the country, playing cards, stepdancing, square dancing (especially to the music of Don Messer) and riding her bicycle.
Mrs. Howe enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, touring greeenhouses, baking, visiting with friends and family, receiving letters, listening to country music (particularly Johnny Cash), and caring for her pets and budgie birds.
She is survived by four sons: Wayne and wife Arlene of British Columbia, Don of RR 2, Lyn, Jim and friend Shelley of RR 2, Lyn, and Charles and wife Cheryl of RR 1, Lyn; six daughters, Shirley Keffer and husband Ralph of New Dublin, Norma Weston and friend Danny Cobey of Brockville, Judy Bennett and husband Gary, of RR 4, Brockville, Elaine McMullen and husband Larry of North Augusta, Pauline Byers and husband Clifford of RR 5, Brockville, and Paulette Cromwell and husband Bob of RR 1, Brockville.
Also surviving are her sisters, Luella Bradford of Jasper, Kathleen McBain of Frankville and Marion Marshall and husband Clarence of Smiths Falls, as well as 22 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition, she is survived by three sisters-in-law, Gertrude Morrison of RR 1, Frankville, Sylvia Howe of Brockville and Elionor Howe of Ottawa.
She was predeceased by her husband Bill on December 19, 1991, and by her grandson Marty Keffer, foster son Kenneth Beach, brothers Clarence and Burton Morrison, and sisters Olive Salter, Beatrice Saunders and Gertrude Anning.
Friends called at the Judson Funeral Home, Athens, where on October 16 the funeral was held, with Rev. Jean Baker, of Christ United Church, Lyn, officiating. Readings were given by grandchildren Josh Howe, Tim McMullen and Karen McPherson and by sister-in-law Sylvia Howe; grandson Robert Bennett sang a solo. The grandchildren formed a guard of honour. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, just west of Brockville.
The pallbearers were Ralph Keffer, Danny Cobey, Gary Bennett, Larry McMullen, Clifford Byers and Bob Cromwell.
Memorial donations were directed to Christ United Church, Lyn, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Mary Shire, 77
ELGIN -- Mary Shire, 77, of Portland, died of a heart attack October 18, 2003 at the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital (Smiths Falls site), after being ill for a month.
Born Marion Julia Simpson at RR 3, Elgin, on September 9, 1926, she was the daughter of Andrew Simpson and the former Susan Gamble. Except for the first year of her life, when she lived in Jones Falls, she lived in Portland, first on Cedar Valley Road and then, from 1947, in the village itself.
She married Albert Shire on November 22, 1947, in St. Mary's Church, Newboro.
In her younger years she ran a restaurant in Portland with her sister. She also worked as a store clerk, a house cleaner for building companies in Portland and a marina clerk. She retired 20 years ago.
She ran the ice rink for Portland and baked for numerous social events. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, crafts of all kinds, gardening and helping others.
Mrs. Shire identified with the Anglican Church and was a member of the Portland Fire Hall Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband Albert Shire, son Stanley George Shire and wife Diane of RR 1, Inverary, and daughter Gail Annette Eysaman and husband Frank of RR 2, Elgin, as well as five grandchildren.
Also surviving are two sisters, Bertha Dillon of Portland and Alda Heagle of Napanee, and many nieces and nephews, as well as two sisters-in-law, Millie Simpson and Fran Simpson.
She was predeceased by her parents, one sister, two brothers and one grandson.
Friends called at the Scotland Funeral Home, Elgin, where on October 21 the funeral was held, with Rev. Steve Timpson of Portland Anglican Church officiating. Burial followed at Morton Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Andy Shire, Ian Shire, Joshua Eysaman, Travis Seward, Tim Simpson and Herb Simpson.
Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
