Marco 'Mac' Covey, 77

ATHENS -- Marco "Mac" Covey, 77, a lifetime resident of Charleston, died October 4, 2003 of a massive heart attack at Brockville General Hospital.

Born at Charleston on May 29, 1926, to Delbert Covey and the former Nellie Stevens, Harold Marco Kelly Covey was one of 12 children. He attended the local school until he began to apprentice with his father to learn and perfect his carpentry skills.

His reputation as a master builder and fine craftsman grew as he built his carpentry business, doing home and cottage construction, renovations, cabinet making (including gun cabinets), and more.

He was also employed at Brockville Psychiatric Hospital and at Maple View Lodge, Athens, where he was working when he retired in May 1991.

Since his retirement, he led a quiet life with his wife, Jean (nee Delderfield) at their home in Charleston. Besides his family, his interests were duck and deer hunting as well as summer and winter fishing, snowmobiling, repairing small engines and building a dune buggy and caterpillar with his sons.

In his earlier years he supplemented his income by working as a fishing guide at Bear Island. Over the years, family and friends enjoyed the couple's "infamous" fish fries and shore dinners on the lake. On June 7, 1964, he and Jean caught a 22-pound lake trout on their 18th anniversary. In the winter, he was known as the local ice tester, ready to alert area residents about the thickness of the ice and whether it was safe to go on it.

Mr. Covey is survived by his wife Jean, and two of their five children: daughter Connie Halliday and husband Jim, both living in Bangladesh, and son Mark and fiancee Kelly of Tincap. He was predeceased by sons Sam (1991), Chris (2001) and Anthony (in infancy in 1967).

The honorary pallbearers were Donald Delderfield, Guy Botsford, Colin Patony and Travis Galway.
