Verna Atkins, 78

Lifelong Brockville resident Verna Marie Atkins died October 14, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital.

She was born December 15, 1924 in Brockville to Charles LeClair and the former Christina Dempsey. She attended St. Francis Xavier School and Brockville Collegiate Institute.

As a young woman she worked as a sales clerk at Kern's Jewelers on King Street, Brockville.

She married Gordon Atkins on January 19, 1942 in St. Peter's (Anglican) Chapel, Brockville, with Rev. Stanley G. Jackson officiating.

Later, she worked at the Automatic Electric plant on Strowger Boulevard for 16 and a half years, retiring in 1986.

She and her husband enjoyed traveling to such places as New York City, Toronto and Montreal for sporting events. They also enjoyed long walks in the country to observe wildlife. In later years she enjoyed taking drives in the country with her family.

Mrs. Atkins is survived by her husband Gordon, daughters Joan Quartus and her husband Elwin and Linda Whaley and her husband Roy, son Dennis Atkins and wife Jeanne, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are her brother Charles LeClair and wife Maureen, as well as several nieces/nephews and cousins.

A private family visitation was held at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville. The funeral was at St. Peter's Anglican Church, Brockville, on October 16, with Canon Michael Read officiating. Burial followed at Oakland Cemetery, just west of the city.

The pallbearers were Doug and Elwin Quartus, Scott Watson, Tyler and Kyle Atkins and Roy Whaley.

Memorial donations were directed to the Brockville Minor Hockey Association (BMHA).

Clark Reynolds, 79

Clark Reynolds, 79, a retired auto mechanic, died October 12, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital. He had had a stroke and had been in the hospital for just over a week, although his health had deteriorated over the past five months.

He was born Gordon Clark Reynolds on October 18, 1923 in Garretton in Grenville County. His parents were Gordon Reynolds and the former Arminda Whaley. He was raised in the Spencerville area.

He married Winnifred Parry on June 23, 1945 in the United Church manse in Spencerville. In 1955 he moved to the Brockville area.

He worked as a mechanic for more than 40 years. He had positions in local garages as an auto mechanic until 1962, when he went to work for DuPont Canada Inc.'s Maitland Site, where he was an equipment mechanic. He retired in 1983.

Mr. Reynolds identified with the United Church. His main interests were his home and family. He enjoyed his waterfront property near Jones Falls on Sand Lake. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting, particularly trips to northern Ontario to hunt moose. He did carpentry and played the guitar.

He was predeceased by his wife Winnifred in 1989; a son, William Gordon Reynolds, in infancy; a son-in-law, Gene Mallette in 1988; and his parents and a brother, Melvin.

He is survived by his daughter, Alice Mallette, of RR 4, Brockville, and two grandchildren, Deanna and Gregory Mallette, and his sister, Alice Warren, of Morristown, N.Y.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, where on October 16 the funeral was held, with Rev. Dr. Alan Bennett, of Wall Street United Church, officiating. Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.

The pallbearers, all nephews, were Willis, Gordon and Howard Warren, Ronald Wright, Richard Ekman and Robert Gilmour. The honorary pallbearer, also a nephew, was John Reynolds.

Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and Hospice of Providence Palliative Care.

Patricia Ronan, 91

Patricia "Patsy" Ronan, 91, a former Phillips Cables employee, died of a heart attack October 6, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital. She had been ill for a few weeks.

Born Florence Patricia Ronan on May 12, 1912 at McIntosh Mills, she was the daughter of Tom Ronan and the former Martha Leeder. She was raised and educated in the McIntosh Mills area and came to Brockville in the 1940s.

She worked at the Phillips Cables plant in Brockville until her retirement 30 years ago.

Miss Ronan identified with St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and was a member of its Catholic Women's League. She enjoyed entertaining at home, attending card parties and going dancing.

She is survived by her nieces Beverly Libitz and husband Len and Helen Willie and husband Don, all of Brockville, and Carol Hennessy and husband Orm of Ottawa, and her nephews Joe Donovan and wife Noreen of Escott, Bill Shipman and wife Eileen of Maitland and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Miss Ronan was predeceased by two brothers, Wilfred and Francis, and four sisters, Winnie Donovan, Toots Ronan, Madeline Ronan and Bernice Shipman.

A rosary service was held at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, by members of the Catholic Women's League. The funeral was October 8 at St. Francis Xavier Church, with Father Brian Price officiating. Burial was at St. James Cemetery, Ballycanoe.

The pallbearers were Paul and Mike Donovan, Steve Nuttal, Tom Bradford, Bert Lynch, Shawn Shipman and Frank Kearney. The honorary pallbearers were Joe Donovan, Bill Shipman, Len Libitz, Don Willie, Orm Hennessy and Jeff Libitz.

Hubert Wey, 81

SPENCERVILLE -- Hubert Wey, 81, of Spencerville, died October 19, 2003 in Kemptville.

He was born February 27, 1927, in Belgium, the son of Joseph Wey and Anna Mitchells. He worked in the construction industry in Belgium.

In 1945 he married Margaret Arens and in 1955 they immigrated to Canada, settling on Hyndman Road. He started his own construction company and built many houses and barns in the area. He and his wife later moved to Spencerville.

Mr. Wey is survived by his wife Margaret, daughter Elfrieda Wey of Spencerville and grandchildren Katrina Burchill and friend Leo Patenaude and Christopher Burchill and friend Crystal Pelehos.

The funeral was held October 22 at St. Laurence O'Toole Catholic Church, Spencerville, with Father Rob Arsenault officiating. Burial was at the Adams Cemetery.

Memorial donations were made to the Kemptville District Hospital Auxiliary Tribute Fund.

Funeral arrangements were made through the Grant Brown Funeral Home-Purcell Chapel, Spencerville.

Stanley Lachapelle, 50

Stanley Wayne Lachapelle, known as "Frenchy, " died October 4, 2003 at Brockville General Hospital, where he had been a patient only a few days. He was 50.

Born in Sweetsburg, Quebec, on October 11, 1952, he was the son of Wilfred and June Lachapelle. He came to the Brockville area in 1969 and had worked for several employers over the years, including Forfar Cheese Factory, Black and Decker, Wall Street United Church and First Baptist Church as custodian, the Royal Brock Hotel and Omni. In later years he established his own janitorial business, S & B Cleaning. As a hobby, he enjoyed working on cars.

He is survived by his spouse, Bonnie Kelly, of RR 4, North Augusta, his companion for over 17 years, and his children: Stanley Jr. and his common-law wife Amanda of Lyn, Steve and common-law wife Kristina Halfpenny of Lyn, Dave and friend Theresa Moore of Mallorytown, James and common-law wife Helen Brown of Kingston, Christine Orava and husband Troy of Lyn, Rebecca Kelly and common-law husband Wade Seguin of Brockville and Newton Kelly and common-law wife Krista Vickery of Brockville.

Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, his step-parents Doug and Ruby Burrows of Delta and his father-in-law Grant Harper of Athens.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel, Brockville, where on October 7 the funeral was held, with Rev. Jean Baker of Christ United Church, Lyn, officiating. Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.

The pallbearers were Mike and Kevin Major, Bob Taylor, Mike Murray, Jim Wilson, Shawn Hodge, Troy Orava and Vince MacDonald. Cameron Birtch was an honorary pallbearer.

Memorial donations to the Lung Association were gratefully acknowledged.
