Fredrick Brewis, 93, retired RCA employee, died suddenly April 11, 2004 at his Brockville apartment.
Born John Fredrick Brewis in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, on February 11, 1911, he was the son of John Brewis and the former Isabelle Spires.
He came to Canada in 1929 and settled in Montreal where he worked as a janitor in an apartment block, then for Troy Laundry. In 1930 he started working at the RCA plant in St. Henri (Montreal).
He married Pearl Dorothy Geddes in 1938 at the Church of the Redeemer in Cote St. Paul (Montreal), Quebec.
During the Second World War, he served with the 97th Division of the Black Watch.
He continued working at RCA until his retirement in 1968, and in 1986 he moved to Brockville.
Here he joined the Brockville Legion Branch 96, the Diamond Jubilee Club and Trinity Anglican Church. He enjoyed playing cards, going for walks and visiting friends at St. Lawrence Lodge.
Mr. Brewis is survived by his daughter Patricia O'Connor of Brockville, grandchildren Deborah O'Connor and friend Robert Kirkey, Kevin O'Connor and friend Jennifer Chatham, and Wendy O'Connor, and great-grandchildren Talen and Ceillidh, as well as his special friend, May Sommerville.
He was predeceased by his wife Pearl, brother Norman and sisters Winifred, Jean Bissonnette and Margaret.
Following cremation at Roselawn Crematorium, a graveside ceremony was held April 14 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, with Pastor Ron Hörst of Trinity Anglican Church officiating.
Arrangements were made through the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville. Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Margaret Foley, 78
Margaret Marie Jeanette Foley, 78, of RR 4, Lansdowne, died at her home on March 25, 2004.
A Christmas baby, she was born in Brockville to Henry Philip Commerford and the former Mabel Wilson on December 25, 1925. She was raised in Brockville, on Water Street in her younger years and on Dales Avenue in her later teenage years, and attended Prince of Wales School and Brockville Collegiate Institute.
She married Roy Foley on November 4, 1946 in Brockville, and lived on Rockfield Road, Lansdowne, and on Black Rapids Road, Lyndhurst, before her retirement, after which she moved to Lansdowne.
She worked at Hex Baits, the Stetson hat factory in Brockville and Burnbrae Farms in Lyn.
Mrs. Foley was a member of Lansdowne United Church and a supporter of the Conservative party. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, quilting and, in later years, jigsaw puzzles.
She is survived by her son Guy Foley and wife Susan of Kingston, daughters Mitzi Matthews of Mallorytown and Jackie Livingstone and husband Daryl of Lansdowne, 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Also surviving is her sister, Alice Miles, of Brockville, and seven nieces.
She was predeceased by her parents, husband Ray on August 29, 2001, sister Phyllis Brown and brothers Robert and Billy Commerford.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on March 29 the funeral was held, with Rev. Gilbert, of the Anglican church at Seeleys Bay, officiating. Burial followed at Union Cemetery, Lansdowne.
Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Alzheimer Society and the Loan Cupboard in Gananoque.
Grace Serviss, 83
IROQUOIS -- Grace Serviss, 83, a lifelong Iroquois resident, died April 30, 2004 at Winchester Hospital after a long illness.
She was born September 28, 1920 in Matilda Township to Ancil Ault and his wife, the former Estella Crobar. She worked as a housekeeper in Cardinal for $1.50 a week in her early years.
On July 6, 1940, she married Garnet Serviss in Morrisburg.
During the Second World War (1939-1945), she worked at the marina in Prescott making supplies for the military. After the war, she worked in a number of locations, including Ontario Hydro, Iroquois Motel and Caldwell Linen Mill.
A wife, mother and grandmother, she was dedicated to her extended family as well, serving as primary caregiver for her father-in-law and mother-in-law in their later years. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed having company come for meals.
Mrs. Serviss is survived by her husband Garnet, and three daughters, Shirley Kardos of Brockville, Anna Lee Wise of Cornwall and Wanda Orava of Brockville, as well as five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, a sister Marilyn Thorne and husband John of Iroquois and a sister-in-law Muriel Locke of St. Catharines.
She was predeceased by her parents, brothers Elmer, Oliver and Carme, and sisters Lillian Turner, Ruth Ault, Lulu Ault, Ida Merkley, Glenna Sommerville and Jennie Grant, as well as her parents-in-law Hilliard and Gladys Serviss.
Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois, where on May 5 the funeral was held, with Rev. Doug Carnegie officiating. Burial followed at Iroquois Point Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Nigel Dwyer, Ken MacDonald, Troy Orava, Steven Barkley, Ed Farmer and Dale Barkley.
Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society.
Louise Feltmate, 73
Louise Feltmate, 73, died April 15, 2004 in her sleep as a result of heart disease at St. Lawrence Lodge, where she had lived for the past three years.
She was born September 11, 1930 in Brockville to Wilfred A. Mallette and the former Zellah J. Lawson. She was educated in Brockville's Catholic schools and married Raymond Feltmate on August 5, 1950 in Brockville.
She worked out of her home doing sewing and knitting and making crafts for sale.
She was a Pentecostalist and Methodist. In her younger years, before arthritis crippled her, she held offices in Loyal True Blue Lodge 475, Loyal Orange Benevolent Association 774 and Crystal Chapter 36.
Her main interests were her family and friends.
Mrs. Feltmate is survived by her husband Raymond; seven sons, Doug and wife Peggy, Charles, Howard, Paul, David and wife Nancy, John and wife Christine and Andy; and three daughters, Sue Kelly and spouse John Armstrong, Shirley Read and spouse Brian Ferguson and Amy Neild and husband Brad, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are four brothers, Beau Mallette of Brockville and wire Orva, Howard Mallette and wife Evelyn of Prescott, Clifford Mallette and wife Nina of Oshawa and Louis Mallette and wife Loretta of Windsor, and one sister, Joreen Jackson of Brockville, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, son Sammy, daughter-in-law Joan, brother Charles, sisters Shirley and Sharon, and brother-in-law Philip.
Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home on April 17 before the funeral in the chapel, during which Pastor Lawrence Croswell officiated. Her seven sons were her pallbearers.
Cremation followed at Roselawn Crematorium and burial was at Oakland Cemetery.
Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Arthritis Society.
Lurinda Beckstead, 60
WILLIAMSBURG -- Lurinda Beckstead, 60, of Morrisburg, died April 30, 2004 at Ottawa General Hospital.
She was born in Prescott on March 28, 1944, to Bill Lemaire and the former Helen Blair. She attended elementary school at St. Mark's Catholic School.
When she got to high school, she found a great dancing partner in Leonard Beckstead: they won all the dance contests during their high school years. After high school they decided to make their relationship permanent and were married on July 4, 1964 at St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church in Prescott. After their marriage, they moved to Morrisburg and lived there from then on.
Mrs. Beckstead worked as head cashier at the grocery store in Morrisburg for many years until health problems forced her to stop working in 1992.
A good athlete, she excelled in golf and a number of years ago won the ladies club championship at the Morrisburg golf club.
When she was no longer able to play sports, she became an advocate for the Kidney Foundation, canvassing and speaking to transplant groups. She was also a lifelong and active member of the Catholic Women's League and held several positions in the organization.
Her family and friends were very important to her.
Mrs. Beckstead is survived by her husband Leonard, daughter Carolyn Beckstead of RR 2, Iroquois, and son Lenny Beckstead and wife Whitnie of Iroquois, as well as grandchildren Morgan and Tyler.
Also surviving are her sisters Mary Melady and husband John of Edmondville, Alberta McNairn of Baltimore, and JoAnne Cartwright and husband Bob of Wasaga Beach; brothers Bill Lemaire and wife Barb of Athens, Chuck Lemaire and wife Pat of Johnstown, Pat Lemaire and wife Lynda of Kingston and Mike Lemaire and wife Patti of Morrisburg; and a dear aunt Kate Colquhoun of Oshawa and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents.
Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, on May 2. The funeral was held May 3 in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Morrisburg, with Father Arikat officiating. Cremation followed and burial will be at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Morrisburg.
The pallbearers were Anthony Lemaire, Jonathan McNairn, Shane Lemaire, John Melady, Jason Lemaire, Paul Melady, Mark Melady and Tim Melady.
Memorial donations to the Kidney Foundation or the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
