David John Ballantyne died at his Brockville-area residence on November 10, 2007 from a sudden illness. He was 74.
Mr. Ballantyne was born to David Ballantyne and Agnes Macmillan in Dumfries, Scotland on January 17, 1933. He was predeceased by both parents.
He was raised and educated in Borgue, Scotland, coming to Canada in 1947 and the local area in 1952.
Mr. Ballantyne worked at Phillips Cables for 42 years and had been retired for 10 years.
He had several hobbies, including playing fiddle, going cross-country skiing, fishing, playing cards with Club 85, and both playing and watching soccer. Mr. Ballantyne also enjoyed spending summers at the trailer on Devil's Lake and attending family gatherings. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Ballantyne was married to Alberta Ann Ross on May 15, 1954 in Brockville.
He is survived by his wife and their children David of Kingston, Heather of Ottawa and Sheila of Brockville, and by his brother Robin of Brockville. He will also be greatly missed by his six grandchildren.
Mr. Ballantyne was predeceased by his brother Alastair of England.
A funeral service was held on November 14 at the Barclay Funeral home in Brockville, with Reverend Doug Johns of the First Presbyterian Church presiding. Interment took place at Oakland Cemetery. Pallbearers were James Davis, Pat Howe, Kyle Ballantyne, Bill Davis, David Rhamey and David Ballantyne. Honorary pallbearer was Mr. Ballantyne's brother, Robin Ballantyne.
Memorial donations made to the Special Olympics Kingston branch are appreciated.
Margaret Isabel Whaley, 96
ATHENS -- Well-known in the Athens and Soperton area, Margaret Isabel Whaley died November 10, 2007 at the Brockville General Hospital Garden Street site after a brief illness at the age of 96.
She was born in Almonte on January 2, 1911, the daughter of Robert Stewart and Margaret McDougall, and was raised and educated there. She attended business college in Carleton Place and then went to the University of Toronto's Victoria College, graduating in 1936 with a degree in food sciences.
The following year in October, she was married to Wilbert Whaley in Almonte, and as a mother, homemaker and partner helped him operate a dairy farm on the Charleston Lake Road for many years. Mrs. Whaley previously worked as a secretary for Brown Bros. in Toronto and was then employed as an accountant at Barclay's Nursing Home in Athens.
The couple sold the farm in 1973 and moved from Athens to Soperton. Mrs. Whaley was a longtime member of the Anglican Church Women's Guild in Oak Leaf and received an award for her involvement in 2004.
She enjoyed entertaining family and friends, cooking, oil painting and gardening. Music was one her great pleasures as she played the piano, sang and loved dancing. Her other hobbies included reading good books and swimming.
Mrs. Whaley's husband predeceased her in 1988. Her children are Helen Whaley of Toronto, Lyall Whaley of Soperton and Bob Whaley (Ann) of Brockville. Also surviving are grandaughter Kathy Coulas and husband Andrew of Cobden, as well as two great-grandchildren - Tylar and Morgan Coulas.
Her brother Jack Stewart died in the Second World War. She was also precedeceased by her sister-in-law Autherine McAteer (Whaley) and her husband William and niece Maureen McAteer, all of Toronto.
Visitation took place at Judson Funeral Home in Athens on November 14 with funeral services the followng day at Holy Trinity Church, Oak Leaf. Rev. Karen Freake and Canon Borden Purcell officiated.
Honorary pallbearers were Gerald Deir, Jim Dixie, David Nesbitt, Gerry Saunders, Harry Van Bruggen and Bob Watts. Interment took place at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Oak Leaf.
Hilda May Webster
ATHENS -- Hilda May Webster died November 4, 2007 at Brockville General Hospital. The former resident of Bridlewood Manor in Brockville was 85.
She was born at Fairfield East on May 26, 1922, the daughter of Fredrick Stanley Walker and Ethel Maud Oakley. She held a variety of jobs, including time at Millhaven Fibres, cooking for resorts, working as a bus driver and later at Zellers store in Brockville. She retired 15 years ago.
Mrs. Webster was predeceased by both of her husbands - Noble Brundige and Elmer Webster.
She is the mother of Collins Brundige (Marilyn) of Chino, Arizona, Arnold Brundige (Julie) of London and Ronald Brundige of Las Vegas. She was predeceased by sons Gordon Brundige of Frankville and Robert Brundige of McIntosh Mills. She is survived by sister Dorothy Weir (Wayne) of Brockville and daughter-in-law Linda Brundige of Frankville, along with seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Her surviving stepchildren are James Webster (Aileen) of RR 4, Brockville, David Walker (Joyce) of Kingston and Corinne McMann (Gary) of Belleville. She was also predeceased by one sister, Bertha Reed Bailey of Smiths Falls, and one great-grandaughter.
Funeral services took place at the Judson Funeral Home and Chapel on November 7 with Rev. Ryan Sim of St. Thomas Anglican Church presiding. Memorial services were held by Trinity Rebekah Lodge 277 and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 96.
Pallbearers were Heather and Rob Street, Brian and Suzanne Reed and Dave and Sandra Goguen. The honorary pallbearers were Linda Perrin, Vi Washburn, Nancy Schroeder, Sandra Cleveland, Lois Robbins and Shelley Costello. Interment took place at Wolford Cemetery.
Leona Marie Stinson, 85
Lifelong Brockville resident Leona Marie Stinson died on November 16, 2007 at Brockville General Hospital after a brief illness.
She made her home at 19 Clarissa Street and worked as a hat fitter at the John B. Stetson Company, on the assembly line at Automatic Electric and in housekeeping services at St. Lawrence Lodge before retiring in 1986.
She played softball in her younger years and enjoyed skating, bowling, knitting, reading and playing cards.
Ms. Stinson was born here on July 11, 1922, raised and educated in Brockville, one of five children for Frederick Stinson and Carrie Lehigh.
Her siblings all survive: Laura Champagne (Donat), Lola Running (John), Thelma Allan (Joseph) and Charles Stinson (Pearl).
She is sadly missed by nieces Barbara Champagne (Ted) and Marie Mitchell (John) and nephew Wayne Allan (Yolanda), along with great nieces Michelle Champagne, Laurie Row (Tom) and Martha Allan, great nephews Steve Champagne (Heather) and Mike Allan (Diane).
Also surviving are great-great nieces and nephews Courtney Gladu, Ryan Row, Tyler and Dillon Champagne, Nicole Fodey (Mike), Delaney and Connor Allan, as well as great-great-great nephew Caden Fodey. She was predeceased by nephew Ted Champagne.
Visitation was held at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel on November 19 and funeral services were there in the chapel on November 20. Rev. Doug Warren of Wall Street United Church presided over the service and tributes celebrating Marie's life were given by Tyler Champagne and Michelle Champagne. Interment followed at Oakland Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Steve Champagne, Tom Row, Wayne Allan, Mike Allan, Tyler Champagne and Ryan Row.
Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Brockville and District Palliative Care Service.
Carman Van Dusen, 59
Carman Douglas Van Dusen, 59, died suddenly on November 9, 2007 following an aortic dissection at the Kingston General Hospital.
Mr. Van Dusen was born August 12, 1948 to the late Walter Allan Van Dusen and Barbara Van Dusen (Mortimer), who survives and resides at St. Lawrence Lodge.
He was raised in Brockville and worked at Dupont for more than 35 years.
Mr. Van Dusen married his wife Kathy on June 7, 1975. He is survived by her and by their daughter Jessica, stepson Robert and sister Sharon Van Dusen. Also surviving is nephew Brandon Tuttle, sister-in-law Mary Cooke and her husband Rod.
Friends and family were received at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel on November 13. The funeral was held November 14 in the Irvine Funeral Home Chapel with Revered Lindsay officiating.
Pallbearers were Robert Koktan, Brandon Tuttle, Leon Edgley, Bill Poole, Ken Dawson and Al Rennick.
