SPENCERVILLE -- Mary (Shanahan) Bruce, 60, died at home in Spencerville on October 29, 2007 after losing her battle with cancer.
Born in Brockville on May 16, 1947 to Kenneth Shanahan and Marion Poore, her mother died when she was three and she was raised by godparents Douglas and Coletta Fisher as a sister to Patricia.
She attended St. Mark's School in Prescott and moved with the family to northern New York where she completed her schooling, graduating from Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1966.
She married Edward Bruce on June 1, 1968, in Spencerville where they spent their lives together. After her children were grown, Mrs. Bruce worked at Wellington House nursing home until she became ill.
Mrs. Bruce was the mother of Mark (Jennifer) Bruce and Tracy (Edward) Dumond of Spencerville. She is also survived by grandchildren Brendan Bruce, Makinley and Darcy Dumond. Also surviving are sister Patricia (Ronald) Service of Constableville, N.Y., sisters-in-law Mabel and Frances Bruce and Shirley (Raymond) Martin, as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents, her godparents and her husband's parents, Hugh and Beryl Bruce, and brothers-in-law Melville, Douglas and William Bruce.
Visitation was held at the Grant Brown Funeral Home, Purcell Chapel, on November 1, with funeral services the next day, officiated by Rev. Fr. Alfred Alilio. Pallbearers were Troy Goldie, Roger TenEyck, Richard Beaudoin, David Bruce, Donald Bruce and Chris McIntyre, with interment following at Union Cemetery.
Memorial donations to the Kemptville District Hospital and the Canadian Cancer Society were gratefully acknowledged.
Douglas Allen Scott, 20
Douglas Allen Scott died in the line of duty at the age of 20 on November 5, 2007 in Kimmirut, Nunavut.
He was born December 21, 1986 in Brockville to Douglas and Marla Scott. "Dougie" was raised in the Algonquin area before moving to Lyn. He attended Algonquin, Maynard and Lyn public schools, then graduated from Thousand Islands Secondary School before attending St. Lawrence College's police foundations program at the Brockville campus.
Recruited by the RCMP, he continued his education at the RCMP Training Academy in Regina, Saskatchewan. On April 23, 2007, Constable Scott proudly attained his lifelong goal to be a police officer. He was assigned to "V" divison, where he worked in Iqaluit and finally Kimmirut.
While growing up, he worked for various families in the area, cutting grass and babysitting. Later, he worked at Mrs. B's Variety, Zellers and Shell Canada. During the summer months, he spent many evenings umpiring local softball games. He began his career in law enforcement as a summer student with the OPP marine unit.
His primary interest was spending time with family, freinds and his puppy, Gauge. He kept in touch with regular telephone calls and e-mails. His other interests included lacrosse, fitness, volunteering, attending community events, playing cards and enjoying outdoor activities. Recently, Const. Scott spent time learning about the culture and landscape of Nunavut. He took part in community festivals, snowmobiling and four-wheeling. Most importantly, he met people of all ages.
Besides his parents, he is survived by brothers Chad and Layne, both of Lyn, grandparents Gordon and Brenda Lindsay of Elizabethtown, Sandra and Henk Jonkman of Kitimat, B.C., and Eileen and Don Kerr of Lyn.
He is also survived by great-grandmother Laura Brown of Riverfield, Quebec, uncles and aunts Glynn and Shannon Lindsay and family of Prescott, David Scott and family of Mallorytown, and Chris and Lauren Scott and family of Kingston as well as step-uncles and aunts Phillip and Tana Gilbert and family of Elizabethtown, Susanne and Andrew Jeffery and family and David and Laurie Kerr and family, all of Kingston.
He was predeceased by his grandfather, Bernard Scott, and his aunt, Margaret Scott.
Visitation took place at the Barclay Funeral Home on November 11 and 12. The following day, a regimental service as held at Wall Street United Church, officiated by Venerable Michael Read and Reverend Douglas Richards of the Anglican parish of St. Lawrence.
Local musicians Healy and Orr sang "Hometown Hero" in tribute to Const. Scott's life. Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were fellow Mounties. The honorary pallbearers consisted of friends from his graduating Troop 32.

Ann Cutler Hyde, 77
Ann Cutler Hyde died suddenly on November 26, 2007. She was 77.
Mrs. Cutler was born July 10, 1930 in Toronto, to Walter Graham and Lucy Persis (nee Coleman) Cutler. Ann and her younger brother, John, grew up in Larder Lake and Virginiatown, Ontario, and she spent every summer of her life at cottages on the St. Lawrence River.
Mrs. Cutler Hyde graduated from Macdonald College, McGill University in 1953. She kept 125 other grads in touch with the annual newsletter for the past few decades, and enjoyed hosting the annual "Mac Gals" gathering.
Mrs. Cutler Hyde lived for many years in Cardinal and Orangeville, and enjoyed her many friends and active volunteering in both towns. She was elected to several leadership positions, including president of the Orangeville Hospital Auxiliary, and served on the hospital's board of directors for 11 years. In 2002, she was chosen as Senior Citizen of the Year in Orangeville for her service to the community.
Mrs. Cutler Hyde returned to Brockville in spring 2003. She became an active volunteer at Fulford Place, the Brockville General Hospital and Meals on Wheels, as well as knitting blankets for "Our Kenya Kids." She also served in the Wall Street United Church UCW, the Canadian Federation of University Women, and the Kingston Presbytery of the United Church of Canada.
Mrs. Cutler Hyde was predeceased by her brother John and by her former husband David Hyde. She is survived by her children Dana (David Berry) of Ottawa, Debbie Aufleger (Albert) of Cumberland, and Doug (Susan) of Kingston. She will be greatly missed by her grandsons Thomas and James Aufleger, Jared Hyde Berry, and Benjamin and Noah Hyde. Mrs. Cutler Hyde is also remembered by sisters-in-law Ruth Ann Hyde of Hagersville and Mary Ellen Morris of Brockville, her nieces and their families, her cousin Nora Langley, and many other friends.
On December 1, Mrs. Cutler Hyde's friend, Reverend Doug Warren, conducted her memorial service at the Wall Street United Church. Dana Hyde gave the eulogy, and friends Linda James and Reg Watts read the scriptures. Her son, Doug Hyde, read the poem "Desiderata", which had been hanging in the cupboard over the sink in Mrs. Cutler's kitchen. Honorary pallbearers were Evelyn Frank, Marlene Irwin, Linda James, Sharon Jull, Karen Kelly, Mary Ellen Mores and Patricia Reynolds. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery in the spring.
Arrangements were in care of the Barclay Funeral Home in Brockville.
Memorial donations were directed to the Wall Street United Church Memorial Fund, and to the Brockville General Hospital Auxiliary.
Maureen Fleming, 80
Mildred Maureen Fleming died suddenly at Brockville General Hospital's Charles Street site on October 13, 2007. A resident of RR4, North Augusta on Jellyby Road, she was 80.
Most of her adult life (35 years) was spent in Maitland and she also lived in Brockville, Kingston and Collins Bay. Mrs. Fleming worked at Parke Davis/Warner Lambert in Brockville, CIL in Kingston and Physacklie Fever Hospital in England.
She was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on October 21, 1926, the daughter of Robert Bingham Beattie and Amelia Pritchard. She was raised and educated in Collins Bay and also attended school in England. Mrs. Fleming was married to Anthony (Tony) Christopher Fleming in Wallasey, England on June 14, 1952 and the couple moved to Canada in mid-1957.
Her main interest was her family. She enjoyed travelling to various parts of Canada and the U.S. as well as overseas. She was a dedicated volunteer with the United Way and Interval House and her hobbies included knitting, reading and ceramics. She belonged to the Happy Face Disciples and the Bees Knees Quilters.
Mrs. Fleming has two surviving children in this area - Janice Corneil (Martin Visser) of Prescott and Diane McRae (Carol Luders) of North Augusta, as well as five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, niece Ann Greene of England and nephew Iain Beattie of England. Her brother Robert Bruce Beattie predeceased her in 1979 and her husband died in 1994.
Visitation took place at the Irvine Funeral Home on October 15-16, with funeral services at Christ United Church in Lyn on October 17 under the direction of Rev. Bob Fillier.
Pallbearers were Bob Boyle, Bruce Harnum, Charles Forrest, Rene Paquette and Harold Preston, with interment at St. James Cemetery in Maitland.
Memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and Interval House were gratefully acknowledged by the family.
May Lillian Homer, 95
May Lillian Homer died peacefully at Brockville General Hospital on December 24, 2007. She was 95 years old.
Born on March 7, 1912 to Edward Arthur Peel and Lily Elizabeth Foster, she was raised and educated in Ville St. Pierre, Quebec.
She married George Frederick Homer in 1936 and worked for Sunlife Assurance Co. in Montreal as a stenographer for seven years.
Her family and friends were her main concern and she happily spent time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Homer also enjoyed travelling and had many wonderful memories of her two trips to England. She also visited many parts of the U.S. as well as holidaying in Bermuda.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church Group 4 Presbyterian Women and was a life member of the Women's Missionary Society Evening Auxiliary.
Mrs. Homer is survived by her daughter, Judy Thorpe (William) of Addison, her son, Edward Homer of Brockville, grandchildren Mark Johnson (Barb) and Marlene Johnson, and great-grandchildren Rachael, Becky, Kristen and Vincent as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Eileen Johnson.
Services were entrusted to the Irvine Funeral Home where visitation was held on December 27. Funeral services were conducted the following day in the chapel, officiated by Rev. Geri Johnson.
Pallbearers were Mark and Vincent Johnson, Bill Thorpe, Gordon MacGregor, Stan Matthie and Michael Murray. Interment was at Oakland Cemetery.
Following the interment, family and friends gathered in the funeral home's reception centre.
Donations were directed to the Brockville General Hospital Foundation, palliative care and the Centennial Road Standard Church.
