Mavis Knapp, 76

ATHENS -- Mavis Idela Knapp, 76, of Plum Hollow (RR 4, Athens), died suddenly March 9, 2007 at Brockville General Hospital.

She was born October 23, 1930 in Carnduff, Saskatchewan, to Stanley Crummy and the former Lovina Douglas. When she was seven, she moved with her family to the Athens area, where she attended Lake Eloida Public School and Athens District High School.

On December 4, 1948 she married Clair Knapp in Brockville and they lived in that city as newlyweds. She worked at the Stetson hat factory, at Automatic Electric (makers of telephone switching equipment) and for the Red Cross. She retired 11 years ago.

She helped her husband with farming at Plum Hollow, where they lived from 1963. Her husband died November 25, 1991.

Mrs. Knapp volunteered at St. Lawrence Lodge and Sheldon's Community Centre and was an active member of Christ Church, Athens. She was a good neighbour who liked to help family and friends in many ways.

Her interests included sewing, knitting, gardening, traveling and reading.

She is survived by three children, Wayne Knapp and wife Mary Rae and William "Bill" Knapp and wife Bev, all of Plum Hollow, and Jane Armstrong and husband Ken of Williamsburg, Virginia; nine grandchildren, Marnie Purcell of Athens, Marcy Bazinet of Frankville, Troy Knapp of Oak Leaf, Misty Knapp of Kingston, Tori Knapp of Plum Hollow, Tyler Coyea of Brockville, Tonya Coyea of Ottawa, Aaron and Casey Armstrong of Williamsburg, Va.; and seven great-grandchildren, Jacob, Dakoda, Sheldon and Kiernan Bazinet of Frankville and Gavin and Alexis Purcell of Athens.

Also surviving are her siblings: Leonard Crummy and wife Dorothy of Brockville, Lila Pattemore and husband Mason of RR 4, Athens, Lois Knapp of RR 4, Athens, Glen Crummy and wife Sheila of Brockville, Nellie Jackson and husband Gary of Brockville, Russell Crummy and wife Gail of RR 5, Brockville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Several sisters- and brothers-in-law also survive: Marlene Thomson, Helen Whitmore, James Knapp, Verla Johnston, Mary Crummy and Barbara Hamilton.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her father in 1974 and mother in 1998, brother Cliff Crummy of New Dublin, sister-in-law Reta Peterson and brothers-in-law Charles "Chuck" Knapp and Thomas Knapp.

Friends called at the Judson Funeral Home, Athens, on March 12. The funeral was held March 13 at Christ Anglican Church, Athens, with Rev. Karen Freake officiating. Burial was at Plum Hollow Cemetery.

The pallbearers were nephews Allan Pattemore, Ken Knapp, Joe Knapp, Trevor Crummy, Rob Jackson and Jamie Jackson.

Memorial donations were directed to Hospice Palliative Care or Athens United Church Accessibility Fund.

Donna Marie Eyre, 48

Donna Marie Eyre, 48, of Trenton, a Brockville native, died March 1, 2007 at Trenton Memorial Hospital after an illness.

She was born March 5, 1958 in Brockville to Wallace Wilmont Shaver and the former Christine Labloski. She attended St. Mary Separate School and Brockville Collegiate Institute.

On June 1, 1974 she married Roger Harold Eyre in St. Paul's Anglican Church, Brockville.

In addition to raising a family of three, she worked at Giant Tiger for 17 years and then Sears Canada for four years, both stores in Brockville. After moving to Trenton she worked at the Giant Tiger store there for 10 years.

Her main interests were her family and grandchildren.

Mrs. Eyre is survived by husband Roger of Trenton and three children, Michael John Eyre and wife Daphne of Kingston, Christine Marie MacPherson and husband Darren of Belleville, and Laurie Anne Eyre of Trenton, as well as six grandchildren.

Also surviving are her brother Barry Shaver and wife Carol of Brockville and two sisters, Ginny Herbison and husband George of Mallorytown and Linda Anderson and husband Doug of Johnstown, as well as several nieces and nephews and numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law.

She was predeceased by her father in 1985, her mother in 2006 and her sister, Barbara Shaver.

Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on March 5 the funeral was held, with Father David Pope, of St. Francis Xavier Church, officiating. Burial followed at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, just west of Brockville.

The pallbearers were Doug Herbison, Chris Herbison, Gary McNish, Robert Eyre, Richard Eyre and Bud Eyre.

Memorial donations were directed to the Make A Wish Foundation and Canadian Cancer Society.

Diane James, 61

Diane James, 61, of RR 2, Addison, died February 12, 2007 at Brockville General Hospital's Charles Street site after an illness.

She was born Margaret Diane Astleford on March 3, 1945 in Brockville. Her parents, Horton Astleford and the former Marion Wood, survive their daughter and live at RR 2, Addison.

Diane grew up in Addison and attended Maude's School and then Brockville Collegiate Institute. She married Carl David James on July 24, 1965 and worked as a clerk at Kern's Jewelry from 1965 to 1970, when she started raising her family.

Her hobbies included knitting, crochet, her dog Muffin and reading. Her main interests were her home and family.

Besides her parents, Mrs. James is survived by her husband and her son Terry Andrew James, both of RR 2, Addison; five Astleford brothers, James and wife Sherian of Jellyby, Robert and wife Sherrie of the United States, Wayne and wife Rita of Athens, Ralph and wife Linda of Brockville and Ron and wife Anne of Addison; two sisters, Linda Sabourin and husband Peter of Prescott and Ann Astleford of Algonquin; and sister-in-law Sandra Haffie of Mallorytown.

She was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Horton Astleford.

A private family gathering was held February 15 at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel, Brockville, with Rev. June Craig officiating.

Cremation followed and burial will be at New Dublin Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial donations were directed to Hospice of Providence Palliative Care.

'Gerry' Brayton, 62

Kenneth Gerald "Gerry" Brayton died suddenly at his residence in Morrisburg on August 6, 2007. He was 62.

Born in Brockville on June 6, 1945 to George "Carson" Brayton and the former Isabelle Twa, Mr. Brayton married the late Catherine Evva Disheau on May 1, 1966. She died on October 11, 2006.

Mr. Brayton worked at Automated Electric, then Microtel, putting together electronic boards for more than 30 years. He loved his job and looked forward to going to work each day but had a hard time accepting retirement when the plant closed.

It was then he and his wife moved to Morrisburg where he enjoyed sitting, visiting and having a good time just talking with family and friends. He always had a joke and was good at telling them.

Mr. Brayton was very dedicated to his wife - their worlds revolved around each other - and their dog Precious, who accompanied them everywhere they went.

He was also a good cook and often made his children homemade pizza and open-face sandwiches. He enjoyed watching nature and wildlife, either in the great outdoors or on television.

He also loved to hunt and fish and often took the children bullhead fishing using big bamboo poles or on camping trips. Family outings also included going swimming at Lyn Pit.

Mr. Brayton was predeceased by both his parents, his wife and his sister Elizabeth.

He is survived by daughter Debbie (Carl) MacFarlane and son Kenneth (Tina) Brayton, both of Brockville, and sons Shawn (Ann) MacFarlane and Gary (Sherry) MacFarlane, both of Lyn.

He is also survived by grandchildren Justin, Nicole, Kasey, Anthony, Shannon, Joshua and Christopher and great-grandson Dylan, as well as sisters Pat (Dwight) Landon, Wanda (Tom) Shewan, Ruth Bois D'Enghien and Shirley (Ted) Jackson, all of Brockville, and brothers Douglas of Waterdown, and Harold and Roger (Sharon), both of Brockville.

Funeral services were held August 13 at the Parker Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Jean Udall. Burial was at the Iroquois Point Cemetery in Iroquois.

Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation are gratefully acknowledged by the family. Condolences and donations may be sent by e-mail to parkerfh@personainternet.com.

Harvey Raymond Green, 76

Harvey Raymond Green died at the Brockville General Hospital on July 1, 2007. He was 76, and had cancer.

Mr. Green was born March 27, 1931, in Junetown to Wilfred and Nellie (Pottinger) Green.

Mr. Green moved to Athens when he was 15 and lived there until his death with his sister Vi and brother-in-law Joe.

He had numerous part-time jobs, then worked at Reynolds Coal Co. and Superior, before he retired at age 52.

Mr. Green was a member of the Sunnidell Golf Club. He enjoyed bowling, snowmobiling, golfing, and taking his two nephews to their many hockey games and tournaments. He was always interested in meeting new people and telling stories.

Mr. Green was predeceased by his brothers Carl (Jessie) and Gordon, and his sister May White (Fred).

He is survived by his brother Donald Green (Mary) of Athens, and sisters Vi, Wilma and Trixie (Don). Mr. Green will also be missed by his several nieces and nephews.

Visitation was at the Irvine Funeral Home in Brockville on July 4-5. A funeral was held for Mr. Green at the Free Methodist Church in Athens on July 5.

Pallbearers were Geoff Mercier, Greg Mercier, Ryan Mercier, Rod Greene, Jeff Green and Jason Green. Burial was at Glen Elbe Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were Brent Moulton, Dave Green, Burt White and Larry Halladay.
