Burt Shaw, 85

Burton "Burt" Kilner Shaw died at age 85 at his home in Desoronto on July 6, 2007.

Mr. Shaw was born in Smiths Falls on July 12, 1921, to Harold Johnston Shaw and Zeta Aline Hunter. He was raised in the Montague Township and attended high school in Smiths Falls.

Mr. Shaw lived in Carleton Place from 1948 to 1958, in Prescott from 1958 until 2003, and in Desoronto from 2003 until his death. He worked as a farmer in Carleton Place and as an instrument mechanic at Dupont in Maitland. He retired approximately 25 years ago.

Mr. Shaw was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and of the Royal Canadian Legion in Prescott. He served from 1942 until 1945 in the RCAF, and was stationed in the United Kingdom from 1943 until 1945. Woodworking was Mr. Shaw's hobby.

He was predeceased by his wife, Rheda Marton, who he married in Smiths Falls on March 18, 1943. He was also predeceased by his brother Russell.

Mr. Shaw is survived by his sisters Marjorie Walker of Lombardy and Gert Paul of Brockville, and brothers Ken Shaw (Denise) of Lombardy and Bill Shaw (Ann) of Lombardy. He is also survived by his children Sheila Priestman (Philip) of Desoronto and Harry Shaw (Kim Kuryle) of Penticton, B.C.

He will also be greatly missed by grandchildren Joanne Priestman, Karen Priestman, Hunter Shaw, Jahnnie Shaw and Starr Shaw, and great-granddaughter Kaitlyn Montgomery.

A funeral for Mr. Shaw took place on July 11 at the Barclay Funeral Home in Brockville, presided by Rev. Ian McLean of the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, and interment followed at the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Maitland.

Pallbearers were Harry Shaw, Hunter Shaw, David Shaw, Geoffrey Paul, Douglas Walker, James Humphrey, Bruce Shaw and Blair Gemmel.

A special service was held by the Royal Canadian Legion in Prescott.

Memorial donations made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Diabetes Association were greatly appreciated.

Lydia Pearce, 94

ATHENS -- Lydia Pearce died at Sherwood Park Manor on July 6, 2007, following an illness. She was 94.

Mrs. Pearce was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on June 30, 1913 to William Meginbir and Matilda Steinke. She was raised and educated in Vantage, Saskatchewan, and then moved to the local area in 1935.

Mrs. Pearce lived in Rocksprings, Frankville and Athens, and worked at Hanton's Store in Frankville, and Hollingsworth Bake Shop and Kennedy's Grocery Store in Athens. She retired around 1984.

Mrs. Pearce was a member of the Athens United Church and organized bus tours for 20 years for the Athens Seniors group. She enjoyed playing bingo, going to yard sales, quilting and specialty cooking.

Mrs. Pearce was predeceased by her husband Horace James "Jack" Pearce, who she married in Regina, Saskatchewan on March 26, 1935. She was also predeceased by siblings Edward Meginbir (Myrtle), Elsie Handley (Lawrence), Art Meginbir, and Albert Meginbir (Muriel).

She is survived by her daughters Shirley Howe of Athens and Jean Pilatzke (Erwin) of Frankville, brother Herman Meginbir (Beryl), and by brother-in-law Harold Pearce (Doris) of England.

Mrs. Pearce will also be missed by her four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation was at the Judson Funeral Home in Athens on July 8 and the funeral for Mrs. Pearce was held at the funeral home chapel on July 9, presided by Rev. David Timpson of the Toledo United Church. Burial was at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Harold Howe, Blair and Blaine Pilatzke, Tom Chant, Hubert Cowle and Fred Fouzie. Honorary pallbearers were George Kennedy and Gordon Morris.

Joe Beaubien, 66

Former Brockville OPP detachment commander, Joseph Ernest Beaubien, of Kingston, died at the Kingston General Hospital on August 11, 2007 after a long battle with cancer. He was 66.

Mr. Beaubien was born June 26, 1941, in Gananoque, son of the late Jack and Marjorie (Reid) Beaubien.

He attended Linklater Public School and Gananoque High School. In 1962, he joined the Ontario Provincial Police and was posted to the Bancroft detachment where he served for 20 years. He then was transferred to the Kingston detachment to head up the penitentiary squad.

Mr. Beaubien served as detachment commander of the Brockville detachment until he retired in 1994.

He was a very caring and helpful person, proud of his family and longstanding career of 32 years with the OPP. Nothing made him happier than being on the golf course or in the outdoors enjoying nature, fishing and sunsets.

Mr. Beaubien is survived by his wife, Sandra (Stevens) Beaubien, whom he married on September 30, 1961 in Brockville. He is also survived by his daughters Cindy Ducasse (Don) of Toronto and Debbie Boylan (Dan) of Kingston, grandchildren Danielle, Denise and Emerson, sisters Jacqui Kielty (Terry) of Ottawa, Mary-wray Brennan (Steve) of Gananoque, and Laura-Jean Beaubien of Victoria, B.C., and sister-in-law Donna Harper (Wayne) of Ottawa.

A celebration of his life was held at the James Reid Funeral Home and Chapel on August 15 with longtime friend, Minister Beverly Lindsay, presiding over the service. Tributes were given by his daughter Debbie, sister Jacqui Kielty, brother-in-law Terry Kielty and sister-in-law Donna Harper.

Memorial donations to the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario are greatly appreciated by the family.

Eleanor Mary Earle, 90

Eleanor Mary Earle, 90, died at Maple View Lodge in Athens on June 20, 2007.

Mrs. Earle was born in Brockville to Arthur and Pearl Storey on April 6, 1917. She was born and raised in Brockville and graduated from Brockville Collegiate Institute. She then went on to attend the Brockville Business College.

Mrs. Earle worked as a bookkeeper at Sears for 20 years and retired 25 years ago. She was a devoted member of the Wall Street United Church and the United Church of Canada. Mrs. Earle was also a member of the Sherwood Park Manor Auxiliary.

She was a hard worker for the Conservative party and a great world traveler. Mrs. Earle visited Europe, Greece, Central South America, and went on frequent trips with her husband to the eastern United States.

Mrs. Earle was a community volunteer at the Brockville Food Bank and provided chair exercises with residents at Sherwood Park Manor. She also enjoyed bingo, card games, reading, crocheting and ceramics.

Mrs. Earle was predeceased by her husband, Ennis Earle, who she married in Brockville on October 31, 1937. She was also predeceased by her brothers Art and Tom Storey, her sisters-in-law and her brothers-in-law.

She is survived by her sons Roger Ennis Earle (Mary) of Brockville and Bob Earle (Linda) of Ottawa, daughter Carol Ann Earle of Ottawa, and her sister-in-law Jean Earle.

Mrs. Earle will also be greatly missed by her seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and 15 nieces and nephews.

A funeral took place for Mrs. Earle on Friday, June 22 at Barclay Funeral Home chapel in Brockville, presided by Rev. Bruce Ross of the United Church. Interment followed at the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Maitland.

Pallbearers were Kevin Earle, Colin Earle, Jason Earle and Mark Earle. Honorary pallbearers were Rick Storey and Ron Earle.

Funeral vocalist was Irmgard Hechler, Mrs. Earle's granddaughter-in-law to-be.

Memorial donations made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and to the Maple View Lodge Auxiliary were greatly appreciated.

Ralph Furzer, 79

ELGIN -- Ralph William Furzer, 79, a lifetime resident of Delta and a former fire chief of the community, died September 12, 2007. He was 79 years old.

Mr. Furzer was born on October 13, 1927 in Delta, son of Fred Furzer and the former Anna Mae Sawyer, both of whom predeceased him.

Mr. Furzer worked on the family farm, operating a market garden business. He was 16 years old when his father died and Mr. Furzer was able to take the business on the road, although he didn't know how to drive at the time. Later he worked for a short time Ontario Hydro until he was married in 1950 to the former Hilda Mae Halladay.

He then starting working for Glen A. Sweet Plumbing and Heating in Delta and worked for the next 42 years as a plumber and oil burner mechanic in the surrounding areas, including Rathwell and Perrins Precision Homes in Portland. Many of the people who owned summer homes depended on him to have their plumbing running in the spring and turned off in the winter. When he suffered a stroke in 1998 and was unable to work, many people came by to visit him when they came to Delta in the spring.

Mr. Furzer retired in 1988.

His interests and hobbies included serving as fire chief in Delta and district for six years, woodworking, fishing and helping those who needed a hand.

Besides his wife, Mr. Furzer is survived by two children, Rick Furzer (Cora) and Connie Galway (David), all of Delta, grandson Cory Furzer and granddaughter Brigette Vincent, great-granddaughter Mary Jane Vincent, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by sisters Mildred Sweet, Gertrude Latimer and Captolia Blaire, and brother Ron Furzer.

He was also predeceased by his father-in-law, Noah Halladay, and mother-in-law, Mary Halladay.

Visitation was at the Scotland Funeral Home in Elgin on September 14, with the funeral on September 15 at the funeral home, with Rev. David Timpson of Delta United Church officiating. Interment was at Pine Hill Cemetery, Delta.

Pallbearers were Greg Halladay, Barry Halladay, Darrell Halladay, Mike Patterson, Jeff Patterson and Robert Mustard.

Memorial donations were to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Diabetes Association.
