Gray, Gilbert

SPENCERVILLE -- Gilbert Wallace Gray, 72, died July 18, 2005 at the Kemptville District Hospital.

He was born on January 12, 1933 at home on the family homestead in Ventnor to David Carruthers Gray and his wife, the former Muriel Wallace. He married Edith Marie Fraser on October 18, 1958, in St. John's Anglican Church in Prescott.

Mr. Gray spent his entire life in the Ventnor area. He was employed as a truck driver and enjoyed his annual fall hunting trips until ill health forced an early retirement. Later, the time spent helping at the Carmichael Farm brought purpose to his days. He was a member of St. James Anglican Church, Crystal Rock, and always found time to help with the annual chicken barbecue.

He was a member of the Loyal Orange Lodge 143 and Loyal Orange Benevolent Association 483, Groveton, which remembered him with a service held at the Purcell Chapel on the evening of Thursday, July 21.

He is survived by his wife Edith and four children, Susan (Stephen Oxner) of Stittsville, David (Angela) of Cornwall, Barry (Kate) of Williamsburg and Karen (Ron Wood) of Oxford Mills, and grandchildren Carey, Allison, Brandon, Ashley, Maria, Nathan, Chelsea, Jacob and Kristen. He was predeceased by his parents.

Friends called at Grant Brown Funeral Home-Purcell Chapel, Spencerville where on July 22 the funeral was held, with Father Claude Delorme officiating. Shawn Carmichael gave the eulogy. Burial followed at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Cemetery in Spencerville.

Pallbearers were James Fraser, Robert Carmichael, Shawn Carmichael, Carl Thorpe, Dalton Gilmer and Louis Boisvenue.

Memorial donations to Kemptville District Hospital Foundation will be gratefully acknowledged.

Peter Johnston Baynham, 69

Peter Johnston Baynham died at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital on July 19, 2005 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 69.

Mr. Baynham was born December 16, 1935 to Margaret Rankin Elliott and Ernest Arthur Baynham at the Elliott homestead on Park Street East in Prescott.

He was raised and educated in Prescott at Central Public School and Prescott High School and went on to study machine shop in Ogdensburg, New York. He was affiliated with the St. John's Anglican Church in Prescott, where he served as an altar boy and was a member of the church's children's choir.

He joined the Air Force at Uplands in 1952. After serving in the military for one term, he went on to work at DuPont's Maitland Site as a laboratory technician. He also worked at labs around the world including England, New York State and British Columbia.

He also worked at the Atomic Energy Control Board. When the operation closed its doors in the late 1970s, he went to work at Microsystems.

On June 8, 1955, he married Eleanor Ruth Ross in Brockville. They had two children and the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary just prior to his death.

Mr. Baynham loved the outdoors and was an avid duck hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed training Labrador retrievers and played on several competitive hockey teams in Prescott and Ottawa. He went on numerous camping and canoe trips at Algonquin Park over the years and was frequently joined by his family. His other interests included sailing, gardening and cooking.

He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for many years in Prescott and for a few in Elliot Lake.

Mr. Baynham is survived by his wife, Eleanor, his daughter Lynne and husband Mark Chagnon of Cardinal and son Stephen of Brockville, grandchildren Lukas Chagnon of Montreal, Amy Chagnon of Mission, British Columbia, and Ross, Lisa and Laurie Baynham all of Brockville.

Also surviving are his brother Gordon and wife Alice of Prescott and their children John, Patricia, Barbara and Paul, as well as nephew Colin Slack of Prescott. He is also survived by his constant companion, his dog Madison.

Mr. Baynham was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Doreen Flood.

Cremation took place at Roselawn crematorium, Maitland on July 21. Interment of his ashes will be at Blue Church Cemetery near Prescott Saturday, August 20 at 11 a.m. where Father Claude Delorme will officiate. Friends and family are invited to attend.

Donations can be directed to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Access Centre for Community Care or the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Raymond Greenham, 82

Raymond Stewart Greenham, 82, of Addison, died at the Ottawa Heart Institute on July 7, 2005 from a variety of heart problems, after having cancer twice. He was 82.

Born in Athens on November 13, 1922, he was the second son of Charles Greenham and Emmaretta Girden. He attended Athens Public School and Athens High School. As a teenager, he made spending money from trapping at Wiltse Lake and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.

On May 14, 1941, he married his high school sweetheart, Marion Eleanor Scott. The couple resided with her parents, Leonard and Lillian Scott, on their family farm at Lake Eloida where he assisted with farming operations until 1958 when the family moved to Addison.

In 1956, Mr. Greenham began working at Parke Davis in Brockville, where he was a dedicated and hard-working employee who always took pride in doing his job to the best of his ability. He retired in 1985 from the manufacturing department where he was the chief drug processor.

Mr. Greenham played junior hockey for various teams including the Perth Blue Wings and played for many years for the Athens Flyers. Along with his three brothers, Charles "Joe," Don and Howard "Towd". Mr. Greenham was a valued member of the 1947 Athens Flyers team that won the Leeds County League Webb and Stewart trophies after an impressive season of 26 wins, no losses. The Greenham brothers were also a part of the 1952-1953 Flyers team, which was the Leeds-Lanark Intermediate B series champion.

Nicknamed Slim, Mr. Greenham was an outstanding defenceman with a sweep-check that covered a huge section of the ice. Over the decades, through good times and bad, he staunchly cheered for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He pitched softball for Athens for several years and later in life coached the Athens junior softball team on which his son, Donald, and youngest brother, Bill, played. He also umpired softball locally.

His wife was an avid antique collector and the couple travelled extensively and frequently throughout eastern Canada and the northeastern United States, attending antique shows. They also enjoyed trips to western North America, Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia.

Mr. Greenham was devoted to his family. For three consecutive years, he and his wife were honoured as "Parents of the Year" for their support of their two children and the other students who participated in extracurricular activities at Athens District High School. After the death of his wife Marion on October 31, 1989, he continued to care for his mother-in-law until her death in 1993. He continued to maintain the buildings, lawn and grounds of his historic home until this spring when failing health prevented him from working outside.

Throughout the years, he treated family pets with the same respect and kindness he showed his loved ones. His cat Stanley was the latest to share his home and benefit from his gentle nature.

He attended Trinity Anglican Church in Addison from 1941.

Mr. Greenham is survived by his daughter Eleanor Kingstone and her partner Rick Thompson of RR 3, Gananoque, his son Donald Greenham and wife Jennifer of Nepean and three grandchildren, Tracy and Scott Greenham of Nepean and Andrew Kingstone and wife Shauna of Lansdowne.

Also surviving are his sisters, Dorris Turner and Phyllis Scott, his brother Bill Greenham and wife Dawn, his sister-in-law Isabelle Greenham of Athens and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Greenham was predeceased by his wife, parents, parents-in-law, brothers Charles and wife Zelta (who lived in Bolton), Don (Athens) and Howard and wife Marilyn (Mallorytown), stepmother Laura Greenham and two brothers-in-law Bob Turner (Cornwall) and Ron Scott (Athens).

Friends called at the Judson Funeral Home, Athens, on July 10 and 11. The funeral was held July 12 at Trinity Anglican Church, Addison, with Reverend Ron Hörst, rector of the Parish of Elizabethtown, officiating. Burial followed at Glen Elbe Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were Leeds-Grenville MPP Bob Runciman and MP Gord Brown. The active pallbearers were Scott Greenham, Andrew Kingstone, John Creighton, Karl Miller, Peter Vander Kloet and Charlie Healey.

Vallie Barkley, 53

WILLIAMSBURG -- Vallie Barkley, 53, died July 22, 2005 at her home in Glen Becker after an eight-year illness.

She was born September 24, 1951 at Brockville General Hospital to Glendon Disheau and the former Beverley Coulter. She married Richard Barkley on December 25, 1969 in Prescott.

She was primarily a homemaker but also was employed as a homemaker, a cashier at the Freshmart in Morrisburg, a babysitter and a security guard at Seafarer's Training Institute.

She lived her entire life in the Morrisburg area except for 1991-2001, when she lived in Swanton, Vermont. She had lived at Glen Becker for the past four years.

She was a member of the public libraries of Morrisburg, Williamsburg and Swanton and was an avid reader. She also enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and doing arts and crafts. She was concerned about the welfare of others.

Mrs. Barkley is survived by both her parents, her husband Richard, son Adam and his wife Jerrie Jo of Richford, Vermont, and daughter Kimberly Gagnon and her husband Mark of Whitby, as well as grandchildren Alison, Lacie, Tabor, Zackary and Justin.

Also surviving are her sisters Catherine Brayton and husband Gerry and Tessa Robinson and husband Scott, all of Morrisburg, and brothers Douglas and wife Marge of Beamsville and Shawn and wife Martha of Cardinal, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by an infant daughter.

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, where on July 25 the funeral was held, with Rev. Jean Udall officiating. Burial was at New Union Cemetery, Williamsburg.

The pallbearers were Douglas and Shawn Disheau, Winston Baker, Charles Barkley, David and Mark Baldwin, Scott Robinson and Gerry Brayton.

Memorial donations were directed to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre and Ottawa Heart Institute.

Gordon McMillan, 72

WILLIAMSBURG -- Gord "Garney" McMillan, 72, died July 25, 2005 with his family at his side after a long illness with Parkinson's disease.

He was born Gordon Grant McMillan on June 27, 1933 in Williamsburg to Frank McMillan and the former Hilda Casselman.

He lived all his life in Williamsburg and grew up with a baseball bat and a hockey stick in his hands. An avid sportsman all his life, he played for many teams, including the Williamsburg Pioneers for which he was catcher for 22 years and coach after that.

He played broomball and golf, and also refereed hockey. He played hockey for the Morrisburg Combines and played with them in Newfoundland for the Allan Cup. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.

Mr. McMillan worked for Ontario Hydro for 39 years in the forestry division, training many new young people and always loving his job.

He loved life, family, friends, sports and telling stories.

He is survived by Mary (nee Seeley), his wife of more than 50 years, daughter Sherry St. Pierre and husband D'Arcy and son Gary McMillan and wife Dana, as well as grandchildren Tracey Brown and husband Allan, Nicole St. Pierre and Grant and Kristen McMillan and great-grandchild Jordyn Brown.

Also surviving are his mother-in-law Margaret Seeley of Ogdensburg and several of his wife's brothers and sisters: Irene Greer of Prescott, Doreen Vanston and husband Gordon of Prescott, Betty Casselman and husband Russ of RR 3, Brockville, Joanne Shannon and husband Ron of Prescott, Gloria Whiteland and husband Gary of Brockville, Ronald Seeley and wife Donna of Brockville, Joe Seeley of Brockville, Pauline Armstrong and husband Keith of Hammond, N.Y., Bonnie Bracy and husband Pete of St. Cloud, Fla., Brent Seeley and wife Janice, Lee Seeley and wife Joanne and Linda Seeley, all of Ogdensburg, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents.

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, where on July 27 the funeral was held, with Reverend Isabel Black officiating. Eulogies were given by daughter Sherry, granddaughter Tracey, lifelong friend Doug Casselman and good friend Jerry Morrell.

The pallbearers were Johnny Whitteker, Gerry Morrell, Jack Mackler, D'Arcy St. Pierre, Doug Casselman and Russ Casselman.

Memorial donations to the Parkinson's Society or Wellington House Activity Fund will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
