Pearce, Shirley

Shirley Elizabeth Pearce, 71, died suddenly on June 26, 2005.

A resident of Brockville, she was born May 21, 1934 in Ottawa to Erle K. Clapp and the former Glenna Lecuyer.

Raised and educated in Ottawa, Mrs. Pearce came to Brockville 40 years ago and spent her winters in St. Petersburg, Florida.

She and her husband Glenn V. Magnuson had been together for seven years.

Mrs. Pearce had been retired for six years as manager of The Wine Rack in Brockville.

She was active in the community as a member of the Red Hat Society, Horticultural Society, Canadian Aid for Chernobyl, and was a 29-year member of Eager Beavers Camping Club (FCRV/NCHA).

Mrs. Pearce also enjoyed camping, crocheting, organizing neighbourhood events as well as traveling with her husband Glenn to Europe and for cruises in Alaska and the Caribbean.

In addition to her husband Glenn, she is survived by son Steven Sarvis and his wife Rose of Russell, two daughters, Faith Allingham and her husband Hugh of Maitland and Wendy Clavet and her husband Francis of Brockville, nine grandchildren, Brandi, Bruce, Cassandra, Stephanie, Hollie, Nikki, Sarah, Erle and Camille as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband of 18 years Bob Pearce in 1997, her parents Erle and Glenna Clapp and granddaughter Alicia Allingham.

Visitation was held June 29 at Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, where the funeral service was held the following day with Ken Snowdon of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints officiating.

Honorary pallbearers were Dick Asman, Matts Calding, Moe Champagne, Henry Lewis, Ross Lumsden, Hubert Marshall and Myron Sponagle, while members and friends of the Red Hat Society formed a guard of honour.

Glenn Magnuson delivered Mrs. Pearce's eulogy, with others from the audience including her son Steven Sarvis also speaking.

Mrs. Pearce was cremated and her ashes are to go to Hawaii. Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Alzheimer Society.

Glenn Adams, 67

Glenn Lloyd Adams, 67, a retired sailor who died August 9, 2005 after a seven-year illness with cancer, will be buried at sea in March 2006.

He was born in Madoc on October 9, 1937, to Elwood Adams and his wife, the former Stella Holmes. He was raised and educated in Frankford. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy and remained in the service for 23 years.

On March 8, 1957, he married Georgina C. Oldham in Halifax, N.S.

When he retired from the navy, he became the owner/operator of a Pizza Delight franchise for 14 years in Halifax, N.S. Then he moved to Ottawa where he served on the Corps of Commissionaires for 14 years until his full retirement six years ago.

Mr. Adams moved to Brockville four years ago. He was a 42-year member of the Oshawa Navy Club and enjoyed reading, music, playing cards, boating and fishing.

He is survived by his wife Georgina Adams of Brockville; three sons, Glenn E. Adams of Brockville, Larry G. Adams, with the RCN in Halifax, and Todd Adams in Ottawa; two daughters, Darlene of Perth and Annette of Vernon, B.C.; mother Stella Poulton of Oshawa; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are his brother Clarence Adams of Oshawa and sister Barbara and husband Michael Kaban of Campbellford.

He was predeceased by two sons, Clarence "Clay" Adams and David Adams, and his father Elwood Adams.

Arrangements, including cremation, were made through the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville. A memorial service will be held in Halifax, N.S. in March 2006 followed by burial at sea.

Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society.

Linda Latham, 56

Linda Rosemary Latham, 56, died July 19, 2005 at Brockville General Hospital after a lifetime of health problems.

She was born in Smiths Falls September 14, 1948, to Freddie Nixon and his wife, the former Phyllis Whalen. The eldest daughter of eight children, she grew up in Lyn and helped raise her younger brothers and sisters. She worked on a farm in Lyn.

On September 17, 1966 she married Albert Latham in Brockville. Over the years, she lived in Smiths Falls, Ottawa and Brockville. While in Ottawa, she worked on the military base.

She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed reading books, growing plants and attending community activities.

Mrs. Latham is survived by her mother Phyllis Nixon of Picton, husband Albert Latham, daughters Angela, Teresa and Christine, all of Brockville, and 10 grandchildren, Lawrence, Daniel, Eric, Jonah, Jessie, Kassandra, Joseph, Shyanne, Nicole and Judith. Also surviving are her brother Reggie Nixon and sisters Donna of Picton, Margaret Heffernan, Doris of British Columbia, Ruth Ann of Brockville and Barbara of Picton, as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her father Freddie Nixon, her brother Stephen Nixon and her grandparents.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, before the funeral there July 22, at which Pastor R.J. Roach officiated. Cremation was arranged and burial took place July 29 at Emmanuel Cemetery, Portland.

Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society, Brockville Animal Shelter and the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Faye Brooks, 55

KEMPTVILLE -- Faye Marybelle Brooks died peacefully at Kemptville District Hospital on July 15, 2005. She was 55 years old.

She was born May 14, 1950 in Peterborough, Ont., the daughter of Percy and Grace Hockaday. She was raised in Lakefield, Ont. She attended public school in Youngs Point and high school in Lakefield, then completed her bachelor's and master's degree of science in nursing from the University of Toronto.

On June 29, 1974 she married John Brooks in Lakefield. They raised two sons, Ian and Rob.

For the past 33 years, she had practised nursing. She was a staff nurse in hospitals and community settings, a lecturer and assistant professor at Queen's University School of Nursing and also a consultant. She spent over 14 years as a director at the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit and the last three years as executive director of the Perinatal Partnership Program of Eastern and Southeastern Ontario.

The major focus in her career was providing and improving health services for children and families. She was active in professional associations and was president of the Association of Nurse Managers of Public Health Agencies in Ontario.

She was also active in the community in parent school councils, belonged to South Gower Baptist Church and sat on the board of Family and Children's Services of Leeds and Grenville.

Among her many interests were her family, faith, traveling and music.

Mrs. Brooks is survived by her husband, John Brooks; sons Ian and Rob; mother Grace Hockaday and sister Lorene Freeburn and husband Cam of Lakefield; nephews Gary Freeburn and wife Kathy and Greg Freeburn and wife Kim and great nephews Duncan, Matthew and Peyton Freeburn of Lakefield.

Also surviving are her mother-in-law Appline "Pat" Brooks, brothers-in-law Doug Brooks and wife Ruth and Ron Brooks and wife Sharon of Bowmanville as well as nephews Mark, Paul and wife Jessica, Nathan and wife Maggie and Colin; and nieces Lori and husband Chris, Suzanne and husband Stephen, and Sheri Lynn, as well as great nephews/nieces.

She was predeceased by her father Percy and father-in-law Gilman Brooks.

Friends called at the Grant Brown Funeral Home-Rolston Chapel, Kemptville on July 17. The funeral was held at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Kemptville on July 18, officiated by Pastor Bruce MacCallum. A eulogy was given by Rob Brooks. The pallbearers were Gary, Greg and Duncan Freeburn and Mark, Paul and Nathan Brooks.

Burial was at Lakefield Cemetery, with Reverend Dr. Charles Jackson officiating.

Memorial donations to Samaritan's Purse, Gideons International, The Easter Seal Society or the Canadian Nurses Foundation will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.

Junior Cassell, 81

MORRISBURG -- Robert Douglas "Junior" Cassell, 81, retired insurance agent, died July 22, 2005 at Winchester and District Memorial Hospital after a four-month illness.

He was born November 24, 1923 in Chippawa, Ont., to Robert Douglas Cassell and the former Luella Harper, later Luella Nix.

He was raised and educated in Morrisburg, where he lived all his life.

On July 23, 1945 he married Anna "Joyce" Mattice in St. James Anglican Church.

Mr. Cassell was employed as the captain of the Morrisburg ferry and tugboat for a number of years. He sounded the waters of the St. Lawrence River for Ontario Hydro during the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway in the 1950s.

The job he most enjoyed was being an agent for the Co-operators Insurance company until his retirement.

He was an active member of St. James Anglican Church and also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 48 in Morrisburg.

As a young boy he could be seen playing hockey. In later life he played both bingo and darts. His true passion, however, was cooking and he thoroughly enjoyed having family and friends over for dinner.

Mr. Cassell is survived by his daughter Judy Scott and husband Jim and their children Kris and Jamie, all of Morrisburg; four brothers, Walter and wife Heda and Mitchell and wife Deanna, all of Morrisburg, John and wife Dawn of Brockville and Harry and wife Marjorie of Foxboro; and sisters Betty Daw and husband Carl of Ajax and Shirley Scott of Whitby, as well as sister-in-law Shirley Cassell of Morrisburg and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Joyce on October 19, 2000, a daughter Susan Cassell and one brother, Charles.

A memorial service was held July 27 at St. James Anglican Church, with Rev. Pat Martin officiating. Following cremation, his urn was buried in St. James Anglican Cemetery, Morrisburg.

The pallbearers were his godson and nephew Larry Belmore and brothers Harry, Mitchell and John. The honorary bearers were brother Walter and grandsons Kris and Jamie Scott.

Memorial donations were directed to the Winchester Hospital or St. James Memorial Fund. The Parker Funeral Home in Morrisburg took care of arrangements.
