A member of St. Peter's Anglican Church in Brockville, she helped with the Community Alpha program and also belonged to the Gideon Society and the Newcomers Club of Brockville.

She was a great cook, reader and games player and also enjoyed knitting, crocheting and travel. She loved her family and grandchildren and was known for her smile, sense of fun and laughter.

John Loughrey, 43

John Patrick Loughrey, 43, elementary school teacher and musician, died July 12, 2005 at Brockville General Hospital. He had been ill with leukemia for seven months.

Born in Brockville on October 6, 1961, he was the third of five children of Dr. Robert Loughrey and his wife, the former Anne Purdy. He attended Commonwealth Public School, Brockville Collegiate Institute and Queen's University.

Although he showed a moderate interest in sports and athletics as a youth, he was drawn much more to music. In his early teens he travelled to Canton, New York, to take lessons in percussion.

While at Queen's University, studying music and majoring in performance, he played percussion in a number of different bands, including the Banana Republic, The Other Band, The Swelltones and the Kingston Symphony.

In Brockville he had his own Daedalian Dixieland Consort band. He was associated with the Brockville Concert Band, Alexander's Big Time Band and Doug Rainsbury's Trio.

He attended MacArthur College in Kingston for teacher training, after which he did some supply teaching locally. His first full-time position was at Lombardy Public School. He then transferred to Addison Public School (now Meadowview), where he taught until December 2004.

In addition to teaching school, Mr. Loughrey also taught music privately and served as organist at Trinity Anglican Church, Brockville, and at Christ United Church, Lyn.

He was married to Elaine Gray in 1991. He gave freely of his time and talents. He was an enthusiastic supporter and helper in Palliative Care Telethons and in early Riverfest productions.

He made many friends in his various fields of endeavour: students and staff where he taught; choirs and parishioners through his two church appointments; and many through his music and band associations.

He is survived by his father, his wife and his daughter, Shannon Anne. He was predeceased by his mother in 1981.
