Hugh John Conley, 89

Hugh John Conley died August 24, 2007 at the Charles Street site of Brockville General Hospital. He was 89 years old.

Born on April 1, 1918 in South Mountain to Robert Henry Conley and Ellen (Ella) Perry Conley, he worked as a young man at various jobs in the area, mainly farm related.

Mr. Conley farmed for several years in the Oxford Mills area before joining Smart's Hardware. In 1951 he started his own trucking firm to deliver products from T. Eaton Co. and then joined McRae's Wholesale as a salesman.

Mr. Conley moved to Brockville in 1948 and in 1959 built a home on Oak Street. A member of St. John's United Church and the Brockville Lions Club, he enjoyed all sports as well as euchre and cribbage.

He also enjoyed traveling, visiting such places as both Canadian coasts, Florida, Europe, Alaska, Norway and Sweden.

Mr. Conley married Edna G. Davidson on January 1, 1944 at the Kemptville Anglican Church. She currently resides at The Rosedale in Brockville.

He is also survived by sister-in-law Ruby Deines of St. Lawrence Lodge, nephews Brian (Rita) Deines and Lloyd (Debbie) Conley of Ottawa, and nieces Lois (Ritchie) Grant of South Mountain, Lorraine (Ian) MacIntyre of Ottawa, Janice Lee MacDonald of Cardinal, Carolyn (Bill) Fowler of Harrowsmith and Brenda McCarthy of Hamilton.

He was predeceased by two brothers and their spouses, Howard (Irene) Conley and Lorne (Eileen) Conley.

Funeral services were held August 27 at the Barclay Funeral Home, officiated by Reverend Myra Garvin and Reverend Marion Johnston of St. John's United Church. Burial was at Oxford Mills Anglican Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Lloyd Conley, Kevin Harrison, Neil Mooney, Ritchie Grant, Ian MacIntyre and Trevor Deines. Honorary pallbearers were Denise Bajinski, Toots Shaver, Gilda Todd, Lila Tanney, Bea Mooney, Beth Murdock and Chris Mooney.

Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and St. John's United Church are gratefully acknowledged by the family.

Oliver Milton Wallace, 83

PERTH -- Oliver Milton Wallace died August 14, 2007 at Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital after an illness. He was 83 years old.

Born on September 9, 1923 in Almonte to William and Mary (nee Campbell) Wallace, he was raised on a farm in Ramsay Township near Carleton Place and educated at Ramsay SS No. 14 School.

A farmer until 1956, Mr. Wallace joined the Ontario Provincial Police, serving as an officer in Prescott and Perth until 1973 when he became a justice of the peace in Perth until he retired in 1978.

With his four siblings serving overseas during the Second World War, he remained at home to help with farm work. Mr. Wallace belonged to Royal Canadian Legion Branch 244 in Perth.

He enjoyed playing cards, cutting wood, visiting casinos and spending time with friends and family, particularly his grandchildren.

Mr. Wallace married Dorothy Ethel Barr on May 26, 1945 in Tatlock, Ontario. She predeceased him on April 11, 2007.

He was also predeceased by his siblings and their spouses, Emily (Ian) Scarth, Jack (Louella) Wallace, Bruce (Verdun) Wallace and Howard (Ida) Wallace.

He is survived by his children, son Barry (Sandy) Wallace of Brockville and Susan (Rick) Doran of Rideau Ferry, as well as three grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held August 18 at the O'Dacre Funeral Home in Perth, officiated by Pastor McIntyre. He was buried in the family plot with his wife, mother and father in the Auld Kirk Cemetery in Almonte.

David Mack, 71

Longtime councillor and former reeve of Elizabethtown-Kitley Township David Mack died suddenly on August 4, 2007 at Brockville General Hospital. He was 71 years old.

Mr. Mack was born on June 11, 1936 in Shefford, Que., son of Edwin Willis Mack and the former Fred Maron Ball. He was predeceased by both parents.

He was raised in Moulinette and educated in Cornwall and Moulinette.

His main places of residence were Algonquin and Halleck's Road West.

He worked at RCA Victor in Prescott and then for 29 years at Automatic Electric, retiring in 1987.

Mr. Mack married the former Claire J. Fortier, who survives, on November 30, 1956.

From 1987-2003, Mr. Mack served as a councillor, deputy reeve and then reeve of Elizabethtown Township, and then as reeve of the amalgamated Elizabethtown-Kitley Township. He was also a member of counties council and the board of management of St. Lawrence Lodge. He was very dedicated to improving township operations and took great pride in council's accomplishments, especially during amalgamation. He was a tireless worker during the ice storm of 1998. He was well respected by council members and township residents, and he was the first recipient of Elizabethtown-Kitley's Senior of the Year Award in 2001.

Mr. Mack enjoyed carpentry and making maple syrup. He made his own maple syrup every spring to give away to family and friends. He also enjoyed making different items in his workshop for his children and grandchildren, and attending his grandson's hockey games. He loved dogs, especially his loyal dog Roscoe.

Besides his wife, Mr. Mack is survived by daughters Brenda Lynne Plotz (Barry), of RR 3, Brockville, Joann Mack and friend Steward, of Cathcart, Ont., son Steve Mack (Barb), of RR 2, Brockville. and grandchildren Brody Plotz, RR 3, Brockville, Brandon and Melanie Mack, Ottawa, and Ryan and Jen Mack, of Toronto.

Also surviving are three sisters and three brothers, Barb McLellan, of Cornwall, Joan Kelly (Tom), of Kingston, Bev McGill (Charlie), of Newington, Stewart Mack, of Cornwall, Doug Mack (Maryvonne), of Colorado, and Ron Mack (Mary), of RR 3, Brockville.

He was also survived by two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral for Mr. Mack was held on August 9 in the chapel of the Barclay Funeral Home in Brockville, with Rev. Roland Glendinning officiating.

Honorary pallbearers were Jim Donovan, George Clow, Bryce Lama, John Johnston, Ed Finucan and John Rayner.

Memorial donations were to the Brockville Humane Society, Heritage Place Museum in Lyn, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Douglas 'Duke' Guilboard, 82

Douglas "Duke" Guilboard died peacefully at Brockville General Hospital, Charles Street site, on August 21, 2007. He was 82 years old.

Mr. Guilboard was born on November 13, 1924, son of Edmond Guilboard and the former Muriel Seaton, and one of 10 children.

Mr. Guilboard lived his entire life in Brockville and in his younger years worked as a bartender and cab driver, and served in the air force during the Second World War, when he was posted in Saskatchewan.

After marrying Kathleen Fodey in 1961, he started work at Cow and Gate, which later became Ross Labs, remaining there until his retirement. He often worked at multiple jobs to support his family, including driving school bus, which he continued for a few years after his retirement. He also worked as a commissionaire and drove cars for 1000 Islands Toyota.

When his wife became ill in 2000, Mr. Guilboard devoted all of his time to caring for her, spending all day with her after she moved into St. Vincent de Paul Hospital. She predeceased him in 2005.

Mr. Guilboard loved fishing, the St. Lawrence River, meeting people and traveling. He enjoyed travels to Florida, Jamaica, Texas, the east and west coasts, Acapulco and the Panama Canal.

He is survived by three children, Brian, Brent (Pam) and Debbie (Al) Jonkman, and four grandchildren, Breanna and Luckas Guilboard and Megan and Kristen Jonkman. He is also survived by sisters Janice Leduc and Elva Jobson (Jim).

Friends were received at Irvine Funeral Home where the funeral was held in the chapel on August 25, with Rev. Doug Richards officiating. Interment was at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were sons Brian and Brent, Leo Fodey, Leo Fodey Jr., Andy Guilboard and Dave Steele.

Memorial donations to the Brockville General Hospital Resident Fund were greatly appreciated.

Shirley Kathleen Dejeet, 71

Shirley Kathleen Dejeet died at Brockville General Hospital on July 24, 2007 after a lengthy battle with multiple scerlosis. She was 71 years old.

Born on June 29, 1936 to James and Kathleen (nee Fawcett) Huggard, Mrs. Dejeet moved to Brockville as a teen and attended Brockville Collegiate Institute.

In 1957 she married Eric Aubrey Dejeet, currently of Waterford, Nova Scotia. She worked as an inspector at Automatic Electric before leaving to raise her two children in Tincap.

An avid fan of music, the St. Lawrence River and the Toronto Blue Jays, she also wrote poetry about her early life and family in Iroquois.

Mrs. Dejeet was predeceased by her parents, uncles Gordon, Dalton and John, aunt Florence, sister-in-law Ann, nephew Michael and good friend Celine (Gary) Hughes.

She is survived by her children, Theresa Davis (Robert) of Mallorytown and James (Lorrie) Dejeet of Brockville, grandchildren Jeremy, Adam, James and Dillon, sisters Sheila (David) Yocum of Mallorytown and Shelba (Ginger) Dalock of Brockville, brothers Winston (Diane) Huggard of Ajax, Victor Huggard of Kingston, and several nieces, cousins, aunts, a nephew and an uncle.

She will also be missed by many friends, including Sandra (Bill) Acason, Shirley (Lorne) Black, Bev York, Shirley (Hugh) McClintock and Darlene Huggard.

Visitation took place at the Irvine Funeral Home July 27, followed by a service conducted by Reverend Douglas Richards.

Cremation was at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Maitland and interment was at the Oakland Cemetery.

Memorial donations to the palliative care unit of Brockville General Hospital and to the St. Peter's Anglican Church Building Fund are gratefully acknowledged by the family.
