His military career spanned 33 years and Mr. Darling earned the distinction of being the first Brockville recruit with the SD&G; Highlanders. He met his war bride, Connie Bailey, in England and they married there in 1942, spending 65 years together.

Mr. Darling was born in Brockville on September 25, 1920, the son of Cassie Harkin and Thurman Darling, the oldest of eight children. Raised on Charles Street across from the current General Hospital, he attended Douglas Haig School and Victoria School.

After graduating from Brockville Collegiate, he attended the College of Trades and Technology in Galt, Ontario (now Cambridge). He attended St. Peter's Anglican Church where he sang in the choir. He was a King Scout and played hockey with Smart's Foundry in the Brockville City League.
