Hilda 'Lil' Hudgin, 96

Hilda "Lil" Hudgin, a resident of Bridlewood Manor since 1999, died August 28, 2007 at the Charles Street site of Brockville General Hospital. She was 96 years old.

Born on the family homestead in Kemptville to Walter Henry and Mary Jane (nee McIntyre) Lightle, she graduated as a nurse from the Kingston Psychiatric Hospital in 1933, receiving an award for the highest marks in the province.

Mrs. Hudgin followed her profession to Kingston, Toronto and later Brockville.

On June 10, 1935 she married Bill Amos Hudgin at Carrying Place, Ontario. They moved back and forth between Kingston and Brockville, finally settling here in 1940.

The couple retired in 1975 and spent much of their time traveling around the world, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in London, England 10 years later. But their most cherished and peaceful times were the many summers they spent in their trailer at Charleston Lake.

Mrs. Hudgin was predeceased by her husband in 1998, her son in 2001 and by her sisters Gladys and Grace, brothers Milburn, Harry, Percy, Oman and Ray.

She is survived by daughter-in-law Moira Hudgin of Toronto, many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins across Canada.

She has also left many friends at Bridlewood Manor and in the Brockville area who remember her outgoing, unabashed approach to life.

Funeral services were held at the Barclay Funeral Home on September 1, officiated by Reverend Bruce Ross. Ralph Lightle spoke at the service.

Her ashes were to be placed next to those of her husband at Cataraqui Cemetery in Kingston.

Jerry Maisonneuve, 75

Gerard (Jerry) Maisonneuve, RR 4, Mallorytown, died on August 14, 2007 at Brockville General Hospital. He was 75 years old.

Mr. Maisonneuve was born on July 29, 1932, in Vankleek Hill, son of Romeo and Elmina Maisonneuve. He was predeceased by both parents.

Mr. Maisonneuve moved to Brockville area 66 years ago. He started doing carpentry work with his dad as a teenager and continued until 1964 when he retired.

His hobbies were fishing, gardening, carpentry work, camping, bonfires with family and Sunday drives.

On May 3, 1958, Mr. Maisonneuve married by the former Joan Beaubiah, who survives, at Christ Church in Gananoque.

He is also survived by two sons and three daughters, Andre (Leona) Maisonneuve, of RR 4, Mallorytown, Jean (Laurie) Maisonneuve, of Frankville, Anita (Keith) MacMillan, of Maberly, Michele (Steve) Earl, of Mallorytown, and Susette (Joe) Topping, of Mallorytown.

He is also survived by two brothers Oscar Maisonneuve, in the U.S., Ernest Maisonneuve, of Brockville, one sister, Lucille Maisonneuve, of the U.S., and sister-in-law Jackie Maisonneuve, of Florida, as we ll as 12 grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one sister, Irene Stearns, and one brother, Rene Joseph Maisonneuve.

A private family service was held at St. Luke's Cemetery in Ballycanoe on August 17, with Rev. Bev Lindsey officiating.

Funeral arrangements were handled by the Barclay Funeral Home in Brockville.

Eleanore Margaret Knapp, 84

ATHENS -- Eleanore Margaret Knapp, 84, of RR 4, Brockville (Glen Buell), died September 17, 2007 at Brockville General Hospital, Garden Street site, after an illness, Alzheimer's disease.

She was born in Newboro on March 21, 1923, daughter of Arthur Tedford and the former Margaret Lyons. She was predeceased by both of her parents.

Mrs. Knapp was raised and educated in the Daytown area. She resided at the Knapp homestead at Lake Eloida from 1942-1980, and RR 4, Brockville, from 1980 until her death.

On December 12, 1942, she married Orre Knapp, who predeceased her March 1, 1984.

Mrs. Knapp was a farmer's wife, homemaker and mother. She also sold Artex paints for several years.

Her hobbies included knitting, traveling across Canada and the U.S., and country music, including making numerous trips to Nashville, Tennessee, and Wheeling, West Virginia.

She took great pride in her family and home and enjoyed the many visits of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She entered BGH, Charles Street site, on March 31 when a fall broke her hip, and was transferred to the Garden Street site on June 19, where she was a patient until her death.

Mrs. Knapp is survived by nine children: Beverly Carr (Percy), of Athens, Marie Knapp, RR 4, Brockville, Paul Knapp (Alice), of Frankville, Frances Guazzelli (Rico), RR 4, Brockville, Linda Munro (Roger), of Port Hope, Roger Knapp (Nerissa), of Guelph, Terry Knapp (Pamela), of RR 4, Athens, Kevin Knapp (Shelley), of Lyndhurst, and Doug Knapp (Jane), of RR 4, Brockville.

She is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Bethelma Tedford, Goldie Doran and Lois Knapp, one brother-in-law, Herb Lawson, and 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Knapp was predeceased by two brothers, Lawrence and Vincent Tedford, one sister, Dorothy Lawson, and one grandson, Lynn Knapp.

Visitation was at the Judson Funeral Home in Athens on September 20, with the funeral in the funeral home chapel on September 21, with Rev. Harry Seeley, retired United Church minister, officiating. Eulogies were by granddaughters Christina Munro and Angie Williams, and Ken Larocque piped at the funeral home and cemetery.

Interment was at Sheldon's Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons Rick and Jody Carr, Todd, Orre and Roger Knapp, Matt Sly, Greg Williams and Jon Munro.

Donations were made to the Rett's Foundation (Jessica Carr Endowment Fund), Alzheimer's Society, and the Athens Medical Centre Building Fund.

Florence Hamblen

A local woman who spent over three decades in nursing, Florence Egan Hamblen, died at Brockville General Hospital on July 26, 2007. She was 91.

The native of Arnprior, the former Florence Gillies attended elementary and secondary school in that town before choosing to enter the School of Nursing at the Brockville Psychiatric Hospital in 1938, graduating in 1941 and going to work at that facility.

A year later, she attended the Toronto Psychiatric Hospital Post-Graduate School of Nursing and qualified for her RN designation in 1943.

In 1953, she received a diploma in psychiatric nursing and clinical supervision from the University of Toronto and following practical training in Rhode Island returned to BPH.

During her career there, Mrs. Hamblen was a floor nurse, ward supervisor and eventually moved to the nursing office where she held the position of assistant director of nursing education.

Following the closure of the BPH School of Nursing, she transferred to the staff of the Brockville General Hospital School of Nursing and retired from St. Lawrence College in 1976.

She continued doing part-time clinical supervision for approximately four years after that.

In the early part of her career, Mrs. Hamblen was active in the RNAO and the BPH nurses alumni.

In 1991, her class celebrated its 50th anniversary.

During retirement, she enjoyed bridge, crafts, bowling, golf, traveling and for more than four decades she was a choir member at First Presbyterian Church.

She was a 50-year member of the Florence Nightengale Chapter No. 5 Order of the Eastern Star.

At age 88, following a serious fall, she sold her home and moved to St. Lawrence Lodge.

A celebration of Mrs. Hamblen's life was conducted at the Barclay Funeral Home and Chapel in Brockville, conducted by Father Roy Nixon, a longtime colleague and friend.

Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens beside her late husband, Hammy.

Ruth McCready (Aunan), 76

Ruth Anne McCready (Aunan), a Brockville native, died in Scarborough on July 26, 2007. She was 76 years old.

She was born in Brockville on October 29, 1930, to William Brady and the former Pearl Moore, who both predeceased her.

She married John McCready on August 19, 1961. He died on February 25, 1994.

Mrs. McCready was a lifelong teacher and her last two schools were Holy Rosary in Ottawa, where she was librarian, and St. Raymond's. She retired in 1989.

Her main places of residence over the years were Brockville, Vancouver, Kanata, Wisconsin and Scarborough.

She was an avid golfer and bridge player with the neighbourhood group in Kanata.

Mrs. McCready is survived by her children, Kathleen McCready, of Ottawa, and William McCready (Michele), of Vancouver.

She remarried in 1997 to Bruce Aunan of Wisconsin. He still resides there.

She is also survived by three aunts: Marjorie Moore, of Brockville, Louis Moore, of Timmins, and Jeanne Moore, of Maitland.

She was predeceased by her sister, Doreen Brady.

Visitation was at the Irvine Funeral Home on July 30. The funeral was held July 31 at St. Francis Xavier Church with Father Brian Price officiating. Burial was at St. Mark's Cemetery in Prescott.

Pallbearers were William McCready and Tom Brandow.
