Pamela Galama of Brockville died suddenly at the Brockville General Hospital on September 9, 2007. She was 48 years old.
Mrs. Galama, whose birth father was Robert Halladay, was adopted at birth by John and Kathie Sayeau. After John Sayeau died, she was raised by her mom and Rae McIntosh, her mom's new husband.
Mrs. Galama attended Benson Public School in Cardinal, then Brockville Collegiate Institute and St. Lawrence College. She worked for a time in Ottawa before securing employment at the SCI plant in Brockville.
A member of the Prescott Genealogy Society, her hobbies also included gardening, camping and fishing.
She married Gregory Stanley Galama in Jamaica on May 14, 2004.
Mrs. Galama was predeceased by her parents and her brother James Halladay.
She is survived by her husband, son Jonathan Bullock of Montreal, birth mother Ruth Ace (Raymond), brothers Sandy Sayeau (Doris), Earl Halladay (Angie), Eric Ace and Garnet Ace (Kelly) and sister Carol Freyer (Mike). She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Janet Galama, a resident of Athens.
She is also sadly missed by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held September 13 at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel, followed by interment at St. John's Cemetery in Cardinal. Pallbearers were Earl Halladay, Steve Sayeau, Jerry Crowder, Trevor Heuvel and Eric and Garnet Ace.
Donations to the Ontario Fibromyalgia Association and the Heart and Stroke Foundation are gratefully acknowledged by the family.
Bill Akey, 68
Bill Akey died from a heart attack at Brockville General Hospital on August 24, 2007. He was 68 years old.
Born in St. Catharines on September 17, 1938 to Clarence William and Edith Alice Akey, he attended school in Toronto. He also served with distinction as a Scout and Kings Scout, volunteering in 1954 during hurricane Hazel.
Mr. Akey joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1957, then transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force where he rose to the rank of chief warrant officer and served for 36 years, retiring to Brockville in 1992.
He took a job as a commissionaire six months later, then worked as a maintenance man with Procter and Gamble.
He is survived by Phyllis, his wife of 47 years, sons Andrew and Donald, daughter-in-law Julie, step-grandson Cody, sister Vivian (Myron) Kazmirchuk, cousin Norma (Norman) Bluette and nephews David, Rob and Greg Kazmirchuk.
He was predeceased by his parents and a son, Andrew's twin brother.
A celebration of his life was held August 30 at the Barclay Funeral Home followed later by a private ceremony.
Elsie Hope Stevens, 79
Elsie Hope Stevens, 79, died suddenly at Brockville General Hospital on August 4, 2007.
She was born in Brockville on April 29, 1928, to John and Myra Haggart, and lived in the area all her life.
She attended local schools in Lyn and Brockville and graduated from Brockville Collegiate Institute and Vocational School.
She began her working life at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital, then went to Orient Hosiery and later Rollit Products, working there until it closed.
Mrs. Stevens and her husband, Clifford, were avid campers and were charter members of the Eager Beavers Camping Club, a chapter of the National Campers and Hikers Association. In 1979, the Eager Beavers were awarded the Regional Directors Conservation Award.
The couple camped throughout Ontario and upper New York State and in 1989 took a trip with sister Mary through Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. For the past 11 years they maintained a camping site at Grenville Park just east of the Johnstown bridge, from May until fall. Here they taught many young family members how to fish and enjoy camping. While at the park they made many friends, just as they had in the camping club.
Mrs. Steven was always involved with her grandchildren and her many nieces and nephews. They all knew where she kept the toy box and she would often be found on the floor, at child level, playing and laughing with them. She was also a substitute mother and aunt to many other young people over the years, relationships that endured throughout the years.
Mrs. Stevens is survived by her children, David Haggert, of Salt Spring Island, B.C., and Angie Thomas, of Brockville.
She is also survived by sisters Jeanne Gifford (Leonard), of Brockville, and Margaret Anderson (Art), of Toronto, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clifford, her parents, John and Myra, a sister, Rev. Mary Haggart, and three brothers, Robert, George and John.
The funeral for Mrs. Stevens was held at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel, where many family members and friends remembered her fondly.
Interment followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Maitland.
Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of choice will be gratefully acknowledged.
Roger Moran, 58
Lifelong Brockville resident John "Roger" Moran died peacefully on Remembrance Day, November 11, 2007 with his family at his side, at Brockville General Hospital's Garden Street site.
Born on March 30, 1949, he was the only son of the late May and Stanley Moran.
Mr. Moran attended St. Francis, St. Mary and Brockville Collegiate Institute schools. On July 4, 1970 he married his childhood sweetheart, Sandra Elaine Baker.
His sales career began at Woolworth's on King Street. From 1969 to 1980 he was employed in the furniture department at Zeller's in the Brockville Shopping Centre. He later went to Woolco in the 1000 Islands Mall.
Mr. Moran left the retail sector to join the St. Lawrence Real Estate Board, working for Townsman Realty until he and partner Ian Stephenson bought the company from Roger Galvin, later adding the Century 21 franchise. They sold the company in 2006 to Dave Norcott.
Mr. Moran's career in real estate lasted 29 years, during which he took much pride and satisfaction in helping families find their perfect homes.
His love for hockey led to an alternate career managing hockey teams from 1982 to 1994 for the Brockville Minor Hockey Association. He also managed the Brockville Tikis for three years and was a supportive fan of the Brockville Braves and Ottawa Senators, traveling with family and friends to many games.
Mr. Moran also enjoyed golfing at the Highland Golf Course, socializing at the Brockville Country Club and spending time at the casino in Gananoque.
He was predeceased by his sister, Carole Ann, in infancy, his mother- and father-in-law, Wilma and Don Baker, as well as several aunts and uncles.
He is survived by his wife, son Michael (Nicole) of Brockville, daughter Terry Anne Hare (Craig) of Sydenham, and grandchildren Josh and Samantha Hare, Madison Moran, Brianna Hunt and Britiany Robinson.
Friends and family were received at the Irvine Funeral Home with the Knights of Columbus Council 1049 gathering for fraternal prayers. The liturgy of the Christian Funeral was held at St. Francis Xavier, officiated by Father Brian Price. Cremation followed at Roselawn Crematorium.
Pallbearers were Ian Stephenson, Don Cross, Jim Airhart, Gary Nowlan, Wayne Hamelin, Brian McGuire, Peter Shea and Greg Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Dave Norcott, Michael Darling, Neil Bolton, Al Kennedy, Roger Galvin and Joe Brennan.
Upon returning from church, family and friends gathered at the chapel where eulogies were read by Sandra Moran, Linda McMullen and Ian Stephenson. A reception followed in the Irvine Funeral Home's reception centre. There was a private family committal service November 16 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Maitland.
Donations to the Hospice Palliative Care services, Canadian Cancer Society and BMHA Sign-up Fund were gratefully acknowledged by the family.
Glenn Wilfred Foss, 74
Glenn Wilfred Foss died November 23, 2007 at the Brockville General Hospital after battling cancer. He was 74.
Mr. Foss was born in Ottawa on November 11, 1933. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to Sudbury, and then to Morrisburg.
Mr. Foss joined Ontario Hydro as a forester, then became a foreman and eventually ended up in management. After 38 years with Ontario Hydro, he then went on to work for the city of Brockville, working for the two local rinks for nine years.
Mr. Foss spent many years camping with family and friends. He also travelled to Myrtle Beach, Florida, Mexico, Venezuela, and many Canadian provinces, including British Columbia and Prince Edward Island.
He had a great passion for many sports such as bowling, curling, hockey, baseball and golf. Mr. Foss was a referee for junior hockey and the Ottawa District Hockey Association. He also umpired little league baseball for the Brockville Legion and golfed five days a week.
He enjoyed playing card games such as euchre, cribbage and canasta with his friends.
He excelled in woodworking, doing projects on his home and the homes of his son and daughter. He also volunteered with the Canadian Red Cross disaster committee.
Mr. Foss met every morning with his neighbours and friends at the 1000 Islands Mall for coffee with his retired coffee club buddies.
He was a great husband, dad, grandfather, uncle and friend to many. He was kind, passionate, giving and responsible.
Mr. Foss is survived by his wife Helen Foss, his son Jeff (Kris) Foss and daughter Julie Foss. Also surviving are his two grandchildren Kyle and Kerilyn Foss, brothers Gary (Cynthia) and Brian (Joan) Foss, sisters-in-law Rita Klonkman, Shirley Lapointe (Gordon), and Thelma McCulloch.
He was predeceased by his parents William and Amy Foss, as well as his brothers Clarence, John, Guy, and Bernie, sisters-in-law Jessie McBain (Percy) and Eva MacEachren, and brothers-in-law Donald McCulloch and Stan Klonkman.
Family and friends paid their respects at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel on Monday, November 26 and Tuesday, November 27. A celebration of Mr. Foss's life took place Tuesday and interment followed at the Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were his grandson Kyle Foss, nephews Kevin Lapointe, Tim Foss, John McCulloch, and friends Mike Cavanagh and Jim White.
