Carl Smith died unexpectedly October 27, 2007. He was 53 years old.
Mr. Smith married Judy Conners on August 1, 1975 at Spencerville United Church. They enjoyed traveling and camping and went on many trips that included friends and family.
He worked at Casco (formerly Canada Starch) for 32 years, where he was well-known for his teasing and sense of humour.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, sons David (Spring) and Clayton (Shannon) and granddaughters Felicity and Clairese.
He is also survived by his mother, Berniece Gilmour, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He will also be missed by in-laws Reg and Alice Connors and their families.
Mr. Smith was predeceased by his father, Earl Smith, his grandparents and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Mary Mackey, 86
Mary Lucy Mackey of Brockville died November 28, 2007 of heart failure. She was 86 years old.
Born in Brockville on October 1, 1921, the daughter of Edwin and Eleanor Hone married William Mackey in Brockville on September 20, 1996.
A secretary for 10 years at St. Lawrence College, Mrs. Mackey served as a volunteer for 42 years at Brockville General Hospital. She also volunteered at Sherwood Park Manor and St. Lawrence Lodge.
An avid golfer and curler, she was a member of the Brockville Country Club and the Anglican Church Women.
Mrs. Mackey was predeceased by her parents and four brothers, James, George and Robert and Jack. She was also predeceased by her first husband, Robert Walter Grant, daughter Margaret Grant-Genderson and son Robert George Grant.
She is survived by her husband William Mackey, grandson Mark Gendron of Ottawa, granddaughter Andrea Gendron-D'Aniello, two great-grandchildren, niece Patsy and nephews David, Doug, Michael, Edwin and Richard.
Funeral services were arranged by the Barclay Funeral Home on December 1, officiated by the Venerable Michael Read of the St. Lawrence Anglican Church. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery.
Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the BGH Foundation are gratefully acknowledged by the family.
Marion Brown, 74
Marion Fern Brown, 74, a retired teacher and committed church and community volunteer, died May 29, 2004 in Brockville.
She was born July 9, 1929 to Gordon Brown and the former Fern Stenton in Peterborough, where she completed her education through Normal School. She then taught primary school students for five years.
In 1954 she married Cecil Brown and they began their married life in Belleville, where she continued teaching. After a short time, they were transferred to Kingston, where their children were born.
They later moved to Whitby, Meaford and Belleville before coming to Brockville when they decided to retire.
While in Meaford, where she was doing supply teaching, she started teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). In Belleville she co-directed an ESL volunteer school for adults and began working with younger children in the schools. She continued her interest as a volunteer at Brockville's Commonwealth school whenever she was needed.
From the time she was a teenager she was involved in church leadership. She taught Sunday school, CGIT (Christian Girls in Training), Young People's Union and church camping. She belonged to the United Church Women and until recently was a member of Brockville's St. John's United Church Council and a former chairperson. She was active in all church courts.
Mrs. Brown was the first lay woman to be elected president of the Bay of Quinte Conference, United Church of Canada. She attended three General Councils and was a member of the executive for several years. She chaired two moderator's advisory committees. In 1992 she was the ecumenical representative of the United Church of Canada to the Assembly Presbyterian Churches, USA.
Preceding General Council work, she served the Division of Mission and its executive. She was also for several years a member of the board of Queen's Theological College.
Following General Council work, she became a volunteer with the Brockville General Hospital Auxiliary, served as president and was made a life member. She chaired Region 8 of the Hospital Auxiliaries Association of Ontario and served on one of its provincial committees; in 1997 she was made a life member of HAAO as well.
She served a term on the BGH Foundation and was a member of the Probus Club of Leeds and Grenville.
Mrs. Brown was a member of the Brockville Country Club and enjoyed golfing, especially with the 9 Hole Ladies section. Other interests included knitting, sewing, reading and especially her family. She enjoyed traveling across Canada, Europe, Mexico, Israel, Alaska and the Caribbean.
She is survived by her husband Cecil Brown, children Catherine Maddox and husband Bill of Belleville, Margaret Brown of Brockville and Murray Brown and wife Carol of Belleville, and grandchildren Stephen and Beckie Brown and Nicholas and Hillary Maddox. Also surviving are her sister Jean Stubly of Mississauga and her brother Ralph Brown and his wife Betty Jean of Bowmanville, as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents.
A memorial service was held June 1 at St. John's United Church, Brockville, with Rev. Myra Garvin officiating. Special memories of her were shared by her nephew Gordon Stubly, son Murray Brown, Rev. Dr. Jean Stairs (principal of Queen's Theological College), and David Dargie (headmaster at Grenville Christian College), who spoke on behalf of St. John's Church and the community. Burial was at Belleville Cemetery on June 5.
Memorial donations were directed to St. John's United Church Restoration Fund, BGH Foundation or Hospice of Providence Palliative Care.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville.
Catherine Gray, 99
A memorial service for Catherine Gray, 99, who was noted for her volunteer work in both Lyn and Brockville and who was a recipient of the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award in 1997, will be held Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at 11 a.m., at First Presbyterian Church.
Friends are invited to the service as well as a reception following in the church, after which a private service will be held at Oakland Cemetery where her urn will be buried in the Gray plot.
Mrs. Gray died June 22, 2004 at Nepean, where she had lived since 1996.
She was born Catherine Elizabeth Neilson on September 23, 1904 in Lyn. Her parents were James Alexander Nielson and the former Maggie Lillian Booth. She attended Lyn Public School and graduated from Brockville Collegiate Institute and Brockville Business College.
In her early years she joined the staff of the Brockville Business College and then the Kingston Business College, where she taught business skills, including shorthand.
She met Talmage Ross Gray while she was teaching at the Brockville Business College on Court House Avenue and he was working in the Land Registry Office in the Court House building, off William Street (he later became registrar for Leeds and Grenville). They were married on June 30, 1934.
During her husband's overseas service in the Second World War, she and her two daughters lived in Lyn. There she began her volunteer work. She was a Brownie leader for 19 years and was active in Christ United Church, including its choir, Women's Association and Women's Missionary Society (WMS).
For 20 years she served on the Elizabethtown Township Area School Board, taking her turn as chairman. For a short time, she was on the Brockville and District High School Board.
She served as a director on the board of Grippen Lake Camp, Inc., for 20 years and coordinated the leadership for the girls' camps.
When she and her husband moved to Brockville, she became involved in their church, First Presbyterian. She was a devoted choir member and was active in the WMS and Ladies Aid, where she served terms as president. The former group made her a life member in recognition of her leadership and contribution.
She was a founding member of the Brockville Concert Association (49 years) and served a period as president.
Along with her husband, she was a founding member and past president of the re-organized Brockville Historical Society. For 10 years she chaired the society's annual antique show, as well as organizing the volunteers.
Mrs. Gray was a founding member of the WAGON Shop for the Brockville General Hospital Auxiliary and served 40 years in various capacities, including president of the auxiliary and chair of out-of-town branches. Her service to the hospital was first recognized with a life membership, later a provincial life membership in HAAO (Hospital Auxiliaries Association of Ontario) and finally as the first honorary president. An additional honour was having a hospital lounge named after her.
For over 25 years she was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Hospital Auxiliary.
In 1985 her husband, Talmage, died. In December 1991, the Brockville Rotarians made her a Paul Harris Fellow in honour of her volunteer work and as a tribute to the work of her late husband.
In December 1996, she moved to Lynwood Park Retirement Lodge in Nepean, where she enjoyed participating in numerous activities and recording some of her memoires for her creative writing class.
On July 1, 1997, as a result of her nomination by the BGH Auxiliary, Governor General Romeo LeBlanc presented her with the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award at a ceremony held at Rideau Hall. Later that day, she attended a reception at which she was presented to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
Mrs. Gray is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth Wesely of Brockville and Jean Kerr and husband Douglass of Nepean, and by four grandchildren, Andrew Wesely of San Francisco, Calif., Jane Wesely of Rochester, N.Y., Donald Kerr of Nepean and Catherine Kerr of Ottawa, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her brothers Donald and James Neilson.
Memorial donations to First Presbyterian Church, Brockville General Hospital Women's Auxiliary or charities of the donors' choice will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
Matje 'Mary' Tuinstra, 77
PRESCOTT -- Matje "Mary" Tuinstra, 77, died June 10, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital.
She was born at Aalsmeer, Holland on March 20, 1927 to Herman Boomhouwer and the former Tryngte Schuit. She married Janus Tuinstra and they immigrated to Canada.
She worked as a secretary at Jameco Mfg. Co. until retirement.
Mrs. Tuinstra is survived by her daughter Elisabeth Streekstra and by her son Herman Tuinstra, as well as grandchildren John and William Tuinstra and Todd and Andy Streekstra, and eight great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are her brothers Franz and wife Tiny, Dick and wife Willy, Tony and Henk and wife Jan, sister-in-law Rosa Boomhouwer and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, husband Janus and brothers Jan and Jake Boomhouwer.
Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, where on June 14 the funeral was held, with Rev. Laurie Milito officiating. Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.
The pallbearers were John and William Tuinstra, Mike Boomhouwer, Bob Foster and Andy and Todd Streekstra.
Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
