ATHENS -- Loreen Beatrice Taylor, 100, a former school teacher, respected community volunteer and artist, died of pneumonia June 4, 2004 at Providence Manor, Kingston, after a short illness.

She taught for several years in a one-room school in Daytown, outside Delta.

Then on September 18, 1926, she married Lawrence Taylor in Delta and from then on helped her husband in A. Taylor and Son Hardware Store, in Athens. She was a member of the Athens Women's Institute, the Rising Sun Lodge No. 85 of the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Athens Library Board. During the Second World War she joined a Red Cross group.

Mrs. Taylor had painted in watercolours in her teens but put down her brush to raise her family. After her husband's death, she took up painting again, studying under the liberating influence of artist and St. Lawrence College instructor Andrea Green. Mildred Sutton, 95

PERTH -- Mildred Sutton, 95, Smiths Falls day-care pioneer, died May 18, 2004 at her daughter's home in Perth after a long illness.

She was born November 21, 1908 in Englehart, Ont., in northern Ontario, to David Phillips and his wife, the former Blanche McSpadden. She moved with her family to Smiths Falls when she was just an infant.

After graduating from Ottawa Teachers College in the late 1920s, she taught kindergarten before marrying Gordon Sutton, former advertising manager of The Smiths Falls Record News, in 1932.

After raising her own family, she returned to teaching. In the mid-1960s she opened her own nursery school at her Elmsley Street home, in response to a group of local mothers. Initially she charged only a dollar a day. "It was a labour of love, " she said. Enrollment at her school eventually grew to 45.

In the late 1960s she began her campaign to persuade Smiths Falls council to develop a formal day-care program. Her efforts eventually led to establishment of the Child Development Centre in 1972. Two years later she retired as a senior teacher there, but continued to teach as a part-time volunteer.

She believed the first five years of a child's life were the formative years. "That's when his character is being formed, " she told a reporter at the time of her retirement. She spoke of her love of children and her concern about "the lack of discipline and over-attention afflicting many pre-schoolers."

In Smiths Falls she taught pre-school Sunday school at Westminster Presbyterian Church and was a member of the choir and the Women's Missionary Society. She also worked with the Canadian Cancer Society and the public hospital's ladies' auxiliary.

She and her husband moved to Whitby in 1979 and later lived in Brockville. For the past year she lived in Perth.

Mrs. Sutton was an accomplished pianist and in her later years became an avid fan of televised hockey, baseball, golf and tennis, interests that others believe gave her longevity and helped keep her mind sharp.

She is survived by her three children, Ann Cole of Brockville, Ian Sutton of Perth and Lynn Wilson of Perth, as well as five grandchildren, Mark Cole of Kingston, Graham Cole of Brockville, David Sutton of Toronto, Dan Wilson of CFB Petawawa and Kim Wilson of Kingston, and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon, in 1992.

A memorial service took place May 21 at Blair and Son Funeral Home, Perth, with burial at Maple Vale Cemetery, Smiths Falls.

Memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society were gratefully acknowledged by the family.
