Alice "Doreen" Bertrend, 78, died August 5, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital. She had been a resident of St. Lawrence Lodge for the past year, having been in failing health over the past few years.
She was born October 26, 1925 to Clinton Morton Cole and the former Dolly Brown, in New Dublin, where she was raised and educated.
On September 4, 1941, she married Joseph "Elmer" Bertrend in Brockville, before her 16th birthday.
In her early years she enjoyed crocheting and taking trips to Myrtle Beach, Florida, and Virginia Beach with her family. She was an avid dart player and played many card games. She was a former member of the Brockville Legion Ladies Auxiliary and attended darts tournaments at the Brockville Armoury.
Her family and friends were her main interests. She enjoyed family gatherings to which she brought her specialty and famed foods: homemade baked beans, doughnuts and butter tarts.
Mrs. Bertrend is survived by her husband of 63 years, Elmer Bertrend; three daughters, Caroline Doucette of Kingston, Crystal Letts and husband Terry of RR 3, Prescott, and Mary Limbeek of Brockville; and three sons, William and wife Monique of Brockville, Albert and wife Mary of Tincap, Dale Bertrend and wife Donna of Brockville and son-in-law Kendal Young.
Also surviving are sisters Gladys Brontmire of Brockville, Grace Salmon of North Augusta, Jennie McNish and husband Harold of Lyn, Lila Leonard of Maynard and brother-in-law James Kluke of Toronto.
Also surviving are 22 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter, as well as many nieces/nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter Bonnie Young, son Terry Bertrend, sister Doris Kluke, brother Stan Cole and in-laws Irvine Salmon, Bert Leonard and Thelma Cole.
Friends were received at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, August 8. The celebration of Mrs. Bertrend's life was held August 9 in the Barclay chapel, with Father Claude Delorme officiating. Her nephew Bruce Salmon gave the eulogy and sang a gospel song. Burial followed at Manhard Cemetery.
The honorary pallbearers were grandsons Edward, Michael and Andrew Bertrend. The active pallbearers were grandsons Todd, Brant and Randy Bertrend, Kevin and Chris Letts and Steven Young. Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Gerard Cauley, 78
Gerard Edmund Cauley, 78, died July 22, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital. He was born March 14, 1926 in Frankville to John Patrick Cauley and the former Ellen Agnes Quinlan. Raised in Frankville he went to public school there and attended Athens High School.
He travelled to Saskatchewan and Alberta twice as a teen to work on farms during the Second World War.
On September 15, 1951 he married Laura Teresa Donovan in St. Philip Neri Church, Toledo.
He made his living as a transport driver, beginning in Frankville with Edwards Transport and then moving to Brockville where he worked for Direct Winters Transport, which was later known as Motorways and then Kingsway. He retired 13 years ago in 1991.
He attended St. John Bosco Church, was an avid reader and had a keen interest in both professional and amateur baseball and hockey, especially any games his grandchildren were involved in.
He enjoyed reminiscing with the gang at Burger King and restructuring the entire Canadian political system over burgers.
Mr. Cauley is survived by his wife Laura and four daughters, Linda Kafenzakis and her husband Jim and Marilyn Washburn and her husband Gary, both of Brockville, Anne Cauley of Kanata and Jeanette Cauley of British Columbia, as well as seven grandchildren, Tina, Nicholas and Emily Kafenzakis, Randy and Gillian Besco and Matthew and Curtis Washburn.
Also surviving are three brothers, Ambrose and his wife Gladys of Brockville, Marcus and his wife Terry of Belleville and John of Brockville, and three sisters, Margaret Donovan of Philipsville, Sylvia Severson of Domville and Monica McCarthy and her husband Lambert of Ottawa, as well as 22 nieces/nephews.
He was predeceased by his mother in 1941, his father in January 1970 and brothers-in-law Raymond Severson on September 30, 1988, and Maurice Donovan on January 26, 1994.
Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, on July 25. The funeral was held July 26 at St. John Bosco Church, with Father Tim Harrison and Father Gerard Donovan (his wife's cousin) officiating. Burial followed at St. Philip Neri Cemetery, Toledo.
The pallbearers were Nicholas Kafenzakis, Gary Washburn, Curtis Washburn, Randy Besco, Matthew Washburn and Brian Cauley.
Memorial donations were directed to the St. John Bosco Mortgage Fund and St. Philip Neri Cemetery Fund.
Elaine Watson, 60
ELGIN -- Elaine Watson, 60, of Lyndhurst, died of cancer July 30, 2004 in Lyndhurst with her family at her side. She had been ill only since June 8.
Born Patricia Elaine Byford on June 13, 1944 in Kingston, she was the eldest of 15 children of Arthur Byford and the former Anne Dorey. She grew up in Gananoque and attended St. John's and St. Joseph's schools and Gananoque High School.
On October 25, 1969 she married Glen Watson in Gananoque and they had one son.
She worked as an operator/inspector at Collins and Aikman plastic company in Gananoque for 36 years, retiring two years ago. Then she raised her grandson, now 19 months old.
Although deaf she didn't let that keep her from enjoying life to the fullest. She identified with St. Columbanus Catholic Church in Elgin, loved fishing and hunting, enjoyed sewing, did several types of crafts and had a great love for books.
She is survived by her husband Greg, son Danny, grandson Brody, and all her siblings, eight sisters and six brothers. Her sisters are Anita Dickson and husband Ernie, Linda Beaupre and husband Alfie, Joanne Charboneau and husband Brian, and Tammy Berry and husband Keith, all of Gananoque; Fay Dennis of Kingston, Susan Condy and husband Joe of Newburgh, Donna Gibbs of Napanee and Kathryn Byford and husband Rob of Harrowsmith.
Her brothers are Jim Byford and wife Tina, Joseph Byford, David Byford and wife Barb and Tim Byford and wife Angie, all of Gananoque; Jack Byford and wife Shirley of Westbrook, and Donnie Byford and wife Elizabeth of Brewers Mills.
Also surviving are 26 nieces/nephews and 14 great-nieces/nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents.
Friends called at the Scotland Funeral Home, Elgin, where the rosary was said by Rev. Father Pat Cardy.
The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated by Rev. Cardy and Father Raymond Vickers, was held at St. Columbanus Church, Elgin, on August 2. The pall bearers were brothers Joseph and Tim Byford, brothers-in-law Alfie Beaupre and Ernie Dickson, and nephews Jeff Dickson and Kent Watson.
Cremation followed the service and burial took place August 6 at Olivet Cemetery, Seeleys Bay.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society and charties of the donors' choice.
Garth Galway, 64
ELGIN -- Garth Baxter Galway, 64, of Spring Valley (RR 4, Brockville) died suddenly July 30, 2004 of a massive coronary attack at Wilson's Campsite, Lyndhurst.
He was born May 16, 1940, in Lyndhurst to Walter Galway and the former Bessie Baxter. He grew up in the Lyndhurst-Chantry area, attending public schools there and then Lyndhurst High School.
He came to Brockville in 1965 and married Catherine Donovan on July 16, 1966, in St. Francis Xavier Church, Brockville. Thirty years ago he moved to Spring Valley.
Mr. Galway worked for the Department of Highways, Kingston, then at Hartley's Mill in Seeleys Bay and finally at Brockville Psychiatric Hospital, from which he retired seven years ago, after 32 years service.
He was a member of the board of the Spring Valley Community Hall, which he helped build and and maintain over 25 years. During the Ice Storm of 1998 he was very active as a hall board member in helping the community through the disaster and later received plaques from the premier of Ontario and the township of Elizabethtown.
He was also a member of the Athens and District Snowmobile Club, the Elizabethtown Snowmobile Club and the Wildlife Federation.
He loved his family and friends, camping, fishing, snowmobiling, teaching his grandson and working on small engines. He enjoyed people and helping others.
He is survived by his wife Catherine Galway, daughter Tracey of Graham Lake and grandson Jarrod Galway, as well as special friends Randy and Amber Sauve.
Also surviving are three brothers, Lynne Galway and wife Alice and Rodger Galway and wife Donna, all of Kitchener, and Barry Galway and wife Veronica, of Frankville; two sisters, Vrene Hartley and husband Charlie of Seeleys Bay and Donna Botham of Smiths Falls, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Other survivors include his mother-in-law Patricia Donovan of Elgin; two brothers-in-law, Joe Donovan and wife Janet of Elgin and Jim Donovan and wife Debbie of Brockville; and sisters-in-law Margret Sullivan of Halifax and Theresa Bannerman of Alberta.
He was predeceased by his parents, father-in-law Phonse Donovan, and brothers-in-law Ray Botham, Doug Sullivan and Les Bannerman.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Scotland Funeral Home, Elgin. A graveside service was held August 6 at Lyndhurst Cemetery, with Rev. Harry Seeley, of Elgin United Church, officiating and more than 200 people attending.
Joan Hudson, 61
KINGSTON -- Joan E. Hudson, 61, born in Chantry, died July 18, 2004 at Kingston General Hospital with her family at her side.
She was born June 13, 1943 to Edwin Chant and his wife, the former Shirley Cowan. She married Gerald Hudson on January 15, 1969.
For many years she was employed as a real estate broker for G. L. Hudson Real Estate.
Her main interests were her family, church and friends. She enjoyed gardening and cooking fabulous meals for family and guests.
Mrs. Hudson is survived by her husband, Gerald; three sons, John and wife Angie, Clifford and wife Cheryl and Paul, at home, all of Kingston.
Also surviving are her brother Mark Chant and wife Bonnie of Lyn; sisters Joyce Tackaberry and husband Ron of Charleston Lake and Jane Gallagher and husband Earl of Portland; and stepmother Phyllis Chant of Portland, as well as six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents.
Friends called at the Gordon F. Tompkins Funeral Home, Kingston. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 21 at St. Paul the Apostle Church, with Rev. Father Leo Bryne officiating. Burial followed at St. Mary's Cemetery.
The pallbearers were her nephews Hugh Chant, Greg Tackaberry, Mike, Dennis and Justin Hudson and Brad Hudson.
Memorial doantions were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society.
