Shirley Jean Morris, 83, died July 25, 2004 at St. Lawrence Lodge. She had had Parkinson's disease for many years.
She was born July 23, 1921 in Brockville, the daughter of Edmund "Brandy" Guilboard and the former Muriel Seaton. Raised in Brockville, she attended Victoria Public School and Brockville Collegiate Institute and Vocational School.
On July 12, 1951, she married Donald Stewart Morris in St. Paul's Anglican Church, Brockville. She became a housewife and mother whose family was very important to her.
An active member of St. Paul's Anglican Church, she belonged to the Anglican Church Women group, was a member of the Chancel Guild and taught Sunday school. She was also a 4-H leader for some time.
Mrs. Morris enjoyed sewing, was an avid rug-hooker and had been given a life membership in the Thousand Islanders branch of the Ontario Rug Hooking Guild.
She lived on Stewart Boulevard for many years before moving to St. Lawrence Lodge in 2002.
She is survived by her husband, Stewart Morris, and two children, Eric Allan Morris of Toronto and Mary Jean Morris of Brockville, as well as a grandson, Christopher Morris.
Also surviving are two brothers, Douglas "Duke" Guilboard of Brockville and Bruce Guilboard, and three sisters, Elva Jobson and husband Jim of Rockport, Eleanor Beatson and husband Thomas of Cardinal and Janice Leduc of Shawville, Que., as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, brothers Ford, Allan "Red" and George Guilboard, sister Alice Haggart and her husband George, and a niece Elva Beatson and nephew Teddy Haggart.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville. A memorial gathering will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations to the Parkinson's Society of Canada and the Mary Jane Hawkins Fund at St. Lawrence Lodge will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
Queenie Covington, 81
WILLIAMSBURG -- Queenie Covington, 81, died suddenly at her Williamsburg home on June 12, 2004.
Born in London, England on November 7, 1922, she was the daughter of Thomas and Beatrice Bacon. She was raised in England. As a teenager during the Second World War, she worked in an munitions factory and for the Ford Motor Company.
In one of the air raids during the war, she met Garnet "Peanut" Covington, a Canadian soldier, and they fell in love. They were married on March 9, 1944, in the district of Ilford, County Essex, England.
After the war, she immigrated to Canada, arriving in Halifax in 1946. She travelled to Montreal along with other war brides to meet their husbands, who had served as members of the Canadian Forces in the war. From Montreal, she and Garnet took a train to Cardinal, where they lived for the next 50 years.
Mrs. Covington was a housewife and mother. In earlier years she enjoyed fishing and hunting with Garnet, riding her bicycle, swimming and taking her children on Sunday picnics.
After her husband's death in 1997, she moved to Williamsburg, where she made new friends and enjoyed many outings with her daughter.
She is survived by her daughter Virginia Miller and husband Doug of RR 3, Williamsburg and son David Covington and wife Rita of Saskatoon, grandson Scott Douglas and two great-granddaughters Kelsey and Kailyn.
Also surviving are two sisters in England, Rosie Watson and Barbara Ackerman, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by brothers Francis and Georgie Bacon and sisters Sally Starkey, Nellie Patterson, Connie Jiron, Renee Fenton, Maude Amon and Dora Hale.
Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg, where on June 17 the funeral was held, with Rev. Doug Carnegie officiating. Burial followed at St. John's Cemetery, Cardinal.
The pallbearers were Doug Miller, Alan Brunt, Harvey McIntosh and Des Barnes.
Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Edith Johnston, 81
ATHENS -- Edith Eileen Johnston, 81, died May 29, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital.
She was born January 4, 1923 at Lehigh Corners to Wilfred Dillabough and the former Hazel Fenlong.
On November 16, 1940, she married Dwight Johnston, who predeceased her on February 28, 1982. She lived most of her life in the Frankville and Lehigh Corners area, later moving to retirement homes and finally Maple View Lodge.
She worked at Rideau Regional Centre for 35 years until her retirement in 1987. She enjoyed gardening and looking after her lawn with great care. She also enjoyed baking and was known for making the best tea biscuits around.
Mrs. Johnston is survived by her son Victor and wife Judy of Athens and daughter Donna and husband Donald of Jasper, as well as six grandchildren, Jill Jackson, Greg Johnston, Randy Wright, Vicki Downey, Shelley Bennett and Penny Northy, and 14 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are her sisters, Muriel McDougall, Hilda Olmsted, Jean Black and Shirley Tobin, and brothers Jack and Earl Dillabough.
She was predeceased by her brother Garnet Dillabough.
The funeral was held in the chapel of the Judson Funeral Home, Athens, on June 1, with Rev. Dolly Dikens, of Athens United Church, officiating. Burial followed at Lehigh Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Andrew Wright, Ryan and Adam Bennett, Kyle Jackson, Kalan Downey and Scott Northy, all great-grandsons.
Memorial donations were directed to Maple View Lodge and Breast Cancer Research.
Jean Mallory, 68
Margaret Jean Mallory, 68, a retired bank teller, died March 2, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital after a long illness.
She was born November 11, 1935 in Martintown, Ont., to Alfred and Frances Wilmott. She was raised in Martintown and attended public school there and high school in Williamstown.
She moved to the Brockville area in 1956 and married Peter Mallory on May 30, 1959 in Wall Street United Church, Brockville. She lived in Rockport and worked as a bank teller at the Royal Bank of Canada branch in Mallorytown until her retirement 13 years ago.
She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion's Mallorytown branch. Her interests included crocheting, socializing, Scottish music and reading.
Mrs. Mallory is survived by her son Garry Mallory of Watson Lake, Yukon, and two daughters, Lisa Mallory of Lansdowne and Lori Avery of Mallorytown.
Also surviving are six nieces/nephews, five great-nieces and four great-nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband and her parents.
The funeral was held March 6 at the Barclay Funeral Home, Lansdowne, with Rev. Allister Rose, of the United Church in Mallorytown, officiating. Burial will be at Rockport Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial donations were directed to the Lung Association.
Lewy Soper, 84
ELGIN -- Henry Lewis "Lewy" Soper, 84, died peacefully at his home in Elgin March 30, 2004 with his wife Enid at his side.
Born October 22, 1919 in Elgin, he was the fifth of six children born to Hugh Soper and the former Margaret Halladay. He attended Elgin Public School and Elgin High School.
On August 9, 1941 he married Enid Tate at her family home in Elgin. He served in the army in England, Italy, France, Holland and Germany during the Second World War, from 1941 to 1945.
In 1947 he built his own garage, where he operated a successful car dealership and farm machinery business for 37 years. He was the first fire chief of the South Crosby Fire Department and continued in this capacity from 1968 to 1978.
He was a lifelong member of Elgin United Church, where he served as an elder and chairman of the church property committee, overseeing the upkeep and maintenance of the church.
He was a member of Harmony Lodge No. 370 and in 2002 received his 50-year jewel.
Mr. Soper's hobbies were hunting, fishing, reading and especially restoring and refurbishing Allis-Chalmers farm equipment. He spent many happy hours building clocks for family and friends. He loved singing and dancing to country music and had enjoyed several trips to Branson, Missouri. He had also taken a train trip to the west coast and a trip to Scotland in 1984. But his main interests were his home and family.
He is survived by his wife Enid Soper and four children, Mary-Lou Bryden and husband Mert of Elgin, Gary Soper and wife Gillian of Bowmanville, Shirley Ferguson and husband Bill of Athens and Jane Blancher and husband Stuart of Mallorytown.
Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Rick Bryden and wife Lori, Michelle Bryden and friend Jim Laidley, Kristine Orr, Carolyn Soper, Dan Ferguson and wife Dawn, Scott Ferguson and friend Amanda Rocheleau, Jennifer de Koning and husband Wayne, Kris Little and Josh Blancher; and seven great-grandchildren, Mara Bryden, Justine Orr, Mitchel Orr, Jessica Ferguson, Rebecca Ferguson, Annalisa de Koning and Justin de Koning.
He is survived as well by three sisters, Gladys Haskin of Athens and Molly Patterson and Sally Halladay, both of Elgin.
Friends called April 1 at the Scotland Funeral Home, Elgin, where a Masonic service was performed by members of Harmony Lodge 370. Members of Elgin Fire Department did a walkthrough in his honour.
The funeral was held at Elgin United Church on April 2, with Rev. Don McLean and Rev. Harry Seeley officiating. Memorial tributes were given by Dawn Ferguson, Rick Bryden, Rev. McLean and Rev. Seeley. Burial followed at Halladay Cemetery.
The pallbearers were four grandsons, Rick Bryden, Dan and Scott Ferguson and Kris Little, and two good friends, Marv Gamble and Wilbur Shanks. Members of the Elgin Fire Department formed an honour guard at the church entrance.
Memorial donations were made to the Elgin United Church Memorial Fund and other charities.
