Jacob "Jake" Deruyter, 61, a retired CASCO employee, died March 28, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital after an illness of only a month.
He was born September 21, 1942 in Halfwef, Holland, to Abraham and Grace Deruyter and was raised in his birthplace. He immigrated to Canada with his family in 1950 and came to Brockville in 1969.
He was a design draftsman for the Casco starch plant in Cardinal for 24 years and retired three years ago.
An avid race fan, he followed NASCAR and any race tracks in the area. He loved bicycling and walking, as well as traveling with his family.
He is survived by his wife, the former Angela Guastaferri, whom he married December 31, 1981 in Wall Street United Church, Brockville.
Also surviving are his son Jeff, at home, brother Abe Deruyter and wife Carol of Brockville and sister Kitty Spies and husband John of Brockville.
He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Ann Thompson, of Long Sault.
The funeral was held March 30 at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, with Father Tim Harrison officiating. Burial followed at Oakland Cemetery. The pallbearers were Bob Foss, Darcy Primrose, D.J. Primrose, Frank DeJong, Michael Lynch and Don Ogilvie.
Memorial donations were directed to the Alzheimer Society.
James Bellamy, 77
ATHENS -- James Edward Bellamy, 77, a resident of Maple View Lodge here since 1975, died at the lodge May 12, 2004.
He was born February 4, 1927, in Toledo to Harold Bellamy and the former Ethel Gardiner. He had cerebral palsy since his birth.
He lived many years in the Greenbush and Rocksprings areas before moving to the lodge.
He identified with the United Church. He enjoyed traveling, visiting, television and talking books from the public library and all the activities at the lodge.
Mr. Bellamy is survived by his brother Warren Bellamy of Lake Eloida and sisters Lorna Johnston of Greenbush and Myrtle Johnston of Redan, as well as his aunt, Dorothy Delaurier of Almonte, and 16 nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, brothers-in-law Ralph Johnston and David Johnston and a niece, Karen Johnston.
The funeral was held May 14 at the Judson Funeral Home, Athens, with Rev. Dolly Dikens, Athens/Addison United Church officiating. His nephew Lyle Johnston read the Scripture. Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.
The pallbearers were five nephews, Bruce, Hugh, Lorne, Cecil and Steve Johnston, and one cousin, Bill Delaurier.
Memorial donations were directed to the Maple View Lodge redevelopment fund and auxiliary.
Agnes Algar
Margaret Agnes Algar, died peacefully April 28, 2004 at her home in Brockville.
She was born in Calgary (date withheld at her family's wish), the eldest child of Rev. Canon Edmund Grant and his wife, the former Lorna Tremaine.
She grew up in a family where music, service to others and strong family ties shaped her outlook on life. She also took an early interest in gardening, which continued all her life.
She taught piano as a young woman and travelled in winter by horse-drawn cutter, accompanying her father to rural churches to play the piano or organ on special occasions. She later learned to play the pipe organ and was a Girl Guide leader.
An adventurer, she left her job and travelled to Whitehorse, in the Yukon, in 1949 to visit her brother and there met Frank Algar.
They were married in Whitehorse in 1949 and had four children before moving to Ottawa in 1956. Their fifth child was born in Ottawa and foster daughter Heather came to live with them 10 years later.
In 1985 she and her husband retired to Brockville, where they were active in the Brockville Yacht Club, the public library, Shepherd's Welcome Centre and Trinity Anglican Church. They continued to sail in their boat and journey worldwide. One of her most enjoyable activities was quilting with two quilting groups, The Thousand Islands Quilters' Guild and Trinity Anglican Church Quilters.
All her life she demonstrated a quiet strength and tolerant nature. She gave her time and energy to community service: as a church organist, volunteer driver, bread baker and willing helper whenever someone was needed to do the work of the organizations to which she belonged.
She complemented and supported her husband Frank in his many activities, although she herself was a private person.
Mrs. Algar was predeceased by her husband in 2002 and by her parents, who had retired in Maitland.
She is survived by her children Stella and husband Bruce of Guelph, Evelyn and husband Fred of Ottawa, Mark and wife Liz of Paris, France, Cynthia of Brockville, Mary of Vernon, B.C., and Heather Green of Ottawa, as well as grandchildren Amanda, Melanie, Grant, Jonathan, Russell, Dylan, Tamara, Christine, Heather, David, Philip and Christopher.
Also surviving are her sister Gwen Noble of London, Ont.; brothers Frank Grant of Ottawa and Ed Grant of Athens; and sisters-in-law Grace Grant, Helen Grant, Pat Couillard and Bea Stephens, as well as several nieces/nephews, including and
Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, on May 4. A private family burial service was held May 5 at St. James Anglican Church cemetery, Maitland, after which a celebration of her life took place at Trinity Anglican Church, with Rev. Ron Hörst officiating. Tributes were given by her daughter Evelyn, foster daughter Heather, and friend Margie Mulvihill.
All her children and their spouses attended, as well as eight grandchildren, her sister and two brothers, nieces Lorna and husband Greg of London, Julie and husband John of Kanata and Marie of Athens, nephew Tyson and wife Lilian and daughter Sandra of Ottawa, members of her two quilting groups and numerous friends.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Wildlife Federation, Canadian Feed the Children, Trinity Anglican Church or the Frank Algar Memorial Scholarship Fund of the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association.
Mary Gilfillen, 51
ELGIN -- Mary Lola Gilfillen, 51, of RR 2, Lyndhurst, died May 26, 2004 at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital, Brockville. She had been ill with cancer for a long time.
She was born in Picton to George and Doreen Johnson and grew up in a large family. She married Ronald Gilfillen on September 5, 1976 in Belleville and they had five children.
Mrs. Gilfillen worked as a cook. She was the former owner of Maria's Pantry in Kingston.
She is survived by her husband Ronald, two sons, Patrick of Newburg and Gregory of Cornwall, and three daughters, Cindy of Centerville, Michelle of Milton, N.Y., and Jennifer of Oshawa, as well as 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are four Johnson brothers, Allen of P.E.I., Robert of Belleville and Dennis and Neil of British Columbia; and five sisters, Linda of Alberta, Donalda of British Columbia, JoAnn of Cobourg, Brenda of Oshawa and Donna of P.E.I.
She was predeceased by both her parents.
Her funeral was held at the Scotland Funeral Home, Elgin, on May 31, with Rev. Harry Seeley officiating.
Burial was at Glenhaven Memorial Gardens, Glenburnie. The pallbearers were Gord Struthers, Rick Simpson, Garth Sherwood and Mark Bricewick.
Memorial donations were directed to Camp Trillium, Picton.
Grietje Grendel, 97
Grietje Grendel, 97, of RR 2, Lyn, died at her home May 31, 2004, in the care of her family.
Born in the Netherlands on August 1, 1906, she was the daughter of Sjoerd Couperus and the former Rinske Hemple. She married Pieter Grendel in 1929 in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands.
The couple, along with their four children, emigrated to Canada in 1951, settling in L'Orignal, Ont. After one year they moved to the Brockville area, north of Lyn, where Mr. Grendel farmed until his retirement in 1969.
She and her husband built a new home on the edge of the farm. The farm was taken over by their son Feike and the couple continued to reside there until Mr. Grendel's death in 1981. Mrs. Grendel continued to live in her home along with her oldest son.
Her family and her church were the main interests in her life. She could remember the birthdays of all her 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She was a longtime member of Maitland Community Reformed Church.
An avid needleworker, she enjoyed knitting, sewing and crocheting. As her vision began failing, she planned ahead and made various items to have on hand as gifts for future new great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her four children, Ruurd "Rudy, " Stuart and his wife Jannie and Feike and his wife Susanne, all of RR 2, Lyn, and Renske "Renny" and her husband John Bertelink of RR 5, Belleville.
In addition to the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she is survived by her sister Tinie Couperus of Holland.
She was predeceased by her parents, husband Pieter, brothers Renze and Feike, who remained in the Netherlands, and a brother Bram and sisters Jet and Pietertje, who all lived in Ontario.
Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, on June 1. Her funeral was held June 2 at Maitland Community Reformed Church. Burial followed at Oakland Cemetery, just west of Brockville.
The pallbearers were grandsons Peter, Martin, David and Richard Grendel and John and James Bertelink. Grandson Frederick Grendel was the honorary pallbearer.
Memorial donations to the Gideons or the Canadian Diabetes Association will be gratefully acknowledged.
