James Tedford, 58

ATHENS -- James "Jim" Lloyd Tedford, 58, a well-known Frankville farmer and Leeds and Grenville counties employee, died suddenly as the result of a farm accident at his residence on July 17, 2004.

He was born March 2, 1946, at a home in Rear of Yonge and Escott to Vincent James Tedford, who predeceased him, and the former Bethalma Reed, who survives.

He attended Daytown Public School and Rideau District High School in Elgin. After leaving school he worked for Brundige Construction and Tackaberry Construction as a heavy machine operator for several years. Finally, he worked for the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, out of the Frankville garage. He could often be seen grading along the roadsides in summer and clearing roads with snowplows in winter.

On February 14, 1975, he married Linda Prosser at St. Thomas Anglican Church, Frankville, and they lived in the area all their time together.

His main interests centred on his family, farm and hunting. He loved his pet dog, a pug named Mitzie, who rode in the farm tractor with him and was a constant companion, even at the time of his death.

Mr. Tedford is survived by his wife Linda, daughter Kristy Nathan and husband Chris of Frankville and son Ryan Tedford and wife Tanya of Rocksprings, as well as a special family friend Kelly Mitten of Brockville.

Also surviving are his brother Karl Tedford of Athens and four sisters, Bonnie Laming, Carol Barber and husband Mike, and Thelma Laming, all of Smiths Falls, and Pam Tedford of Athens; an aunt, Eleanor Knapp or RR 4, Brockville and an uncle Jack Tedford and wife Maxine of Jasper; and a brother-in-law Jim Prosser and wife Marg of Addison.

He was predeceased by his father-in-law Borden Armstrong and by mother-in-law Hilda Prosser in 1998.

The funeral was held July 21 at the Judson Funeral Home, Athens, with Rev. Peggy Hudson officiating. Burial will be at Lombardy Cemetery at a later date.

Honorary pallbearers were Gary Whitmore, Harry Talbot, Bill Minish, Shaun McDonnell, Donald Morrison and John Bennett.

Memorial donations were directed to St. Thomas Anglican Church, Frankville, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Maurice Hunt, 77

He was born in Mallorytown on November 20, 1926 to William Sheridan Hunt and the former Gladys Geraldine Kelly.

He joined the army at 16 and served with the Sherbrooke Fusiliers Armoured Regiment throughout Europe, landing in France on D-5. He was wounded and returned to Canada, rejoining the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps until his discharge from the army.

On June 1, 1946 he married Mary Florence "Shirley" Hurford in Trevelyan.

He first worked as an auto mechanic and later opened his own business, Hunt's Small Engine, on Highway 29, which he operated for many years.

His main interests were his home and family. He enjoyed being in, on or just near the St. Lawrence River, camping with friends and traveling across Canada, the United States and all through Mexico.

Audrey Simpson, 94

A memorial service for Audrey Phoebe Simpson, 94, a British war bride who worked as a nurse at Brockville Psychiatric Hospital, will be held Friday, September 3 at 2 p.m. in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She died August 21, 2004 at St. Lawrence Lodge.

She was born in Burma on January 8, 1910, the daughter of Joseph Cooper and his wife, the former Daisy Forbes.

She was an independent spirit, an adventurer. After living in Burma, she went to boarding school in England and trained in nursing there. Then she set off for India where she nursed in Calcutta.

Returning to England, she did private duty nursing and was responsible for three air raid shelters in Croydon during the Second World War.

She met Stanley "Bud" Simpson, a Canadian soldier in the Canadian Army Service Corps, and they were married in 1942. She left her homeland in 1944 as a war bride, traveling by boat and train to Brockville with her infant son.

Mrs. Simpson faced the many challenges of her new life in Canada with determination, perseverance and a "press on" attitude. She enjoyed community activities with her husband at the Brockville Rowing Club, the Brockville branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and the militia.

She later returned to the workforce as a nurse at the Brockville Psychiatric Hospital.

She had a keen mind and enjoyed discussing current events. She was an expert at crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. She loved flowers and gardening and participated in the local horticultural society, the Shepherd's Welcome Centre, Trinity Anglican Church and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Simpson spent her last years at the Rosedale Retirement Centre and then St. Lawrence Lodge, where she enjoyed the activities and appreciated the care of the staff. Her British traditions were with her to the end - an afternoon cup of tea and a sip of sherry in the evening.

She is survived by her son Howard Simpson and wife Sue of Winnipeg, and her daughter Maggie Simpson of Brockville, as well as grandchildren Craig and wife Bev, Paul, Terry and wife Suzanne, Jessica and Jeremy and wife Nicole.

Also surviving are her brother-in-law Bob Simpson of Winnipeg and sister Heather Pengelly in England.
