Chuck Crewe, 86

Charles "Chuck" Morris Crewe, 86, a former commander of Brockville's Power Squadron, died August 18, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital, 24 hours after having a stroke.

He was born July 18, 1918, in Port Crewe, Ont., to Lloyd Ernest Crewe and the former Florence Myrtle Cleveland. He was raised and educated in western Ontario and married Dorothy Elizabeth Frosdick on February 18, 1944, in Wheatley, Ont.

He was a chemical analyst with Brockville's Parke Davis plant and a member of the Association of the Chemical Profession of Ontario. He retired in 1983.

Mr. Crewe belonged to the Brockville Yacht Club and was deeply involved in the Brockville Power Squadron, of which he was commander during the years 1970 to 1973. He served his squadron with distinction over a period of many years, a record which is recognized by his having accumulated no fewer than 38 merit marks. He went on from squadron duties to serve at the district level with equal skill, rising to the rank of district commander from 1981 to 1983. He then served in a number of posts at the national level, rounding out a career of dedicated service throughout the CPS boating organization.

He identified with Wall Street United Church and was a member of the Friends of Fulford Place Association.

He enjoyed traveling and had visited all seven continents, including Antarctica, and had been to the Arctic as well. He also enjoyed boating, fishing (especially with his nephews and grandsons), woodworking, bridge and reading.

Mr. Crewe is survived by his wife Elizabeth, daughter Sheila Beth Dubyk and husband Wally of Manotick and grandchildren Ryan and Brandon. Also surviving are two sisters, Marie Thwaites and husband Spencer of New Jersey and Louise Hewson of Manitoba, as well as seven nieces and three nephews and a sister-in-law Eleanor Crewe.

He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Richard and John, sister-in-law Arlene Crewe and brother-in-law Lee Hewson.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, and burial was at the Erie Cemetery in Wheatley.

Memorial donations were directed to the Friends of Fulford Place and the Canadian Cancer Society.

Bill Nolan, 90

ELGIN -- William "Bill" Nolan, 90, died August 5, 2004 at the Carveth Care Centre in Gananoque after a short illness.

He was born October 3, 1913, in Birkenhead, England, to Frank Nolan and the former May Upton. His childhood was spent in the orphan home run by Dr. Barnardo at Birkenhead. He came to Canada in 1928 as a "home boy" working on farms in the Sweets Corners area.

Mr. Nolan joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve in February 1940, one of the first 10 to join up at Kingston. He served in the merchant navy during the Second World War, becoming a chief petty officer. He travelled all over the world, including the South Pacific, and made seven trips across the Arctic, bringing supplies to London, England. He was discharged in 1946.

He married Eleanor Langlois in Halifax, N.S., in 1945. After her death, he married his second wife, Phyllis Sloan-Chapman, in Sweets Corners in 1973.

After DuPont Canada established its plant at Maitland, he worked there as a gardener, retiring at age 65.

He identified with the Anglican Church, attending St. John's Leeds, in Sweets Corners, and over the years lived in Elgin, Seeleys Bay and then back in Sweets Corners. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 491 in Seeleys Bay, where he served in many posts, including youth and education officer. He was also the first to receive life membership in the Naval Veterans Association (Kingston).

He is survived by one daughter, Maureen Nolan of Elgin, brother Raymond Nolan of Huntsville, numerous nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law Joe Langlois and wife Glenna of Elgin and Hubert Langlois of Verdun, Quebec, and sister-in-law Theresa Alleyn of Montreal, Que.

He was predeceased by both his wives, daughter Debbie Nolan and brother David Nolan.

Friends called at the Scotland Funeral Home, Elgin, where special services were held by the Seeleys Bay Legion branch and the Kingston Naval Veterans Association.

The funeral was held August 9 in St. John's Anglican Church, Leeds, at Sweets Corners, with Rev. Reg Gilbert officiating. Burial followed at Lillies Baptist Cemetery.

The active pallbearers were John Cross, Vince Kenney, Pat Kenney, Ed Courneya, John Duncan and Fred Day. Honorary pallbearers were Don Charboneau, Jack Inglis, Joe Turner, Russ Thompson, Ben Halladay, Mike Willis, Orvin Martin, Joe Langlois, Edmund Kenney and Norm Merriman.

Memorial donations were directed to Lillies Baptist Cemetery.

Irene Plummer, 83

Irene Madeleine Plummer, 83, died August 15, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital. She had been seriously ill for three weeks but had been in failing health for the past three years.

Born February 12, 1921 in Montreal, Que., she was the daughter of Ernest Marcil and the former Delia Desormeaux. She was raised in Montreal until her family came to Brockville in 1931.

She married Lloyd Francis Plummer in Brockville and lived on Brock Street for more than 40 years.

She was a housewife and a member of St. Francis Xavier Church in Brockville. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

Mrs. Plummer is survived by her husband Lloyd and two sons, Jerry Gendron of Beaconsfield, Que., and Richard Gendron and wife Diane of Addison, as well as granddaughter Chantal Richards and husband Don and their children Michael and Lyndsay and grandson Christian Gendron and wife Sherri and their children Kate and Alexis.

Also surviving are two sisters, Marion Desormeaux and Jeannette Charland, both of Brockville, and three nieces and two nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; three sisters, Yvonne Lavoie, Simonne Lamarche and husband Nick, and Margarite Pritchard and husband Bill; and a brother, Roger Marcil.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, where on August 17 the funeral was held in St. Francis Xavier Church, with Father Brian Price officiating. Burial followed at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Jerry Gendron, Richard Gendron, Christian Gendron, Don Richards, Michael Richards and Lonnie Kelly.

Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Vernon Washburn, 70

ATHENS -- Vernon Windfield Washburn, 70, of RR 1, Frankville, died July 29, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital.

He was born October 16, 1933 in Tomifobia, Que., to Edward Washburn and the former Tessie Gardyne. He was raised and educated in Tomifobia. He was employed by Washburn's Cartage for a few years.

He married Violet Knapp on August 25, 1956 in North Hatley, Que., and came to Brockville in 1960.

He worked for Direct Winters Transport from 1962 until his retirement in 1990.

He purchased a farm in Greenbush in 1964 and lived there until 1985, when he bought a home in Frankville.

Mr. Washburn loved to listen to old-time country music. He always had a garden and took great pride in the harvest. People could often see him driving his Massey-Ferguson tractor, one of his favourite possessions.

He loved summertime because family members from Quebec would come and camp in his backyard.

He enjoyed cutting wood, keeping horses, farming, spending time with his grandchildren, visiting with friends and neighbours and going for Sunday drives with his wife.

Mr. Washburn is survived by his wife Violet, son Randy and wife Lynn of Athens, and two daughters, Debbie Knapp and husband Ron of Plum Hollow and Penny-Lee Coates and husband Roger of RR 4, Athens, as well as grandchildren Ashley and Brandon Knapp, Veronica and Curt Washburn and Hunter Coates.

Also surviving are three sisters, Esther Marrott and Florence Holt of Quebec and Florean Markwell of Vermont, and several nieces and nephews, as well as special neighbours Madison and Tyler Butler.

He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Clarence and Ralph, and sisters Pearl Oxford and Mildred Reinhart.

Friends called at the Judson Funeral Home, Athens, where on August 1 the funeral was held, with Rev. Reg Gilbert officiating. Eulogies were given by niece Janice McIntyre and friend Gordon Brundige. Burial followed at Glen Elbe Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Curt Washburn, Raymond Flood, Gordon Brundige, Brandon Knapp, John Theriault and Mike Edwards.

Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society, Arthritis Society and Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Josephine Mullaly, 94

Josephine Teresa Mullaly, 94, a retired CNR clerk, died August 2, 2004 at Sherwood Park Manor, a week after having a stroke. She was a resident of Sherwood Park Manor.

Nicknamed Josie, she was born June 26, 1910 in Saint John, N.B., to Jeremiah J. Wall and the former Julia Brennan. She was raised in Saint John, graduating from St. Vincent's Girls High School in June 1927. She graduated from secretarial school at Mount Carmel Academy in 1928.

She worked as a secretary at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Saint John from 1927 until 1945.

On October 17, 1944, she married Thomas G. Mullaly in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Saint John.

After leaving the bank, she worked as a secretary at Continental Life Insurance in Saint John for eight years. After the death of her husband she worked five years for the Canadian National Railway in Saint John as a clerk. She retired about 1970.

She came to Brockville in June 1973. A member of St. John Bosco Parish since its founding, she was a 60-year member of the Catholic Women's League. She was also a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Hospital Auxiliary and a former member of the Legion of Mary.

Her special interests included her family and friends, her grandchildren's activities, bridge and other card games, and volunteering at Sherwood Park Manor.

Mrs. Mullaly is survived by her daughter Maureen Laurin of Brockville, grandchildren Michelle Cross and husband Mark, Paul Laurin and wife Amy, and Tom Laurin, and great-grandson Matthew Cross. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Anne Mullaly and Audrey Mullaly, and three nieces and eight nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband and two sisters, Loretta Kane (who lived in Saint John) and Florence W. Humphrey (who lived in California), as well as their husbands.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, where on August 3 the Catholic Women's League said the Rosary. The funeral was August 4 at St. John Bosco Parish Centre, Brockville, with Father Timothy Harrison officiating. The pallbearers were Michelle Cross, Paul Laurin, Tom Laurin and John Lefave. The honorary pallbearers were Terence Mullaly, Peter Dunphy and Andre Laurin.

Burial was on August 7 at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Saint John, N.B., and prayers at the grave were led by Rev. Raymond Mullaly.

Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the St. John Bosco Parish Mortgage Fund.
