Audrey Moke, 91

IROQUOIS -- Audrey Jean Moke, 91, who lived at the Hartford Retirement Home in Morrisburg the past three years, died suddenly September 1, 2004 at Winchester and District Memorial Hospital.

She was born June 14, 1913 in Williamsburg to William Carr and the former Carrie Belle Merkley. She married John Wesley Moke in Williamsburg in March 1932 and became a housewife.

Mrs. Moke lived in Iroquois and attended Knox Presbyterian Church, Iroquois. She was a member of Knox Church Ladies, the Iroquois Women's Institute and the Iroquois Seniors Group.

She is survived by two daughters, Lois McCadden of Chesterville and Shirley M. Dillabough of Brockville, nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are her sister-in-law Irene Carr and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband John Moke and three brothers, Dwain, Ralph and Emerson Carr.

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois, on September 3 before the memorial service, led by Rev. Doug Carnegie. Cremation was arranged and burial will be at Memorial Hill Cemetery, Lunenburg, Ont.

Memorial donations were directed to Winchester Hospital.

Rae McIntosh, 79

Willis Rae McIntosh, 79, of Rosedale Retirement Centre, died suddenly at the Brockville General Hospital August 1, 2004 after a very short illness with cancer.

"Rae" was born in Williamsburg January 14, 1925, the son of Willis Arthur McIntosh and Vera Mae Merkley, both direct descendants of United Empire Loyalists. He attended Matilda Public School in Morrisburg and Morrisburg Collegiate Institute.

After completing school he worked on the family farm with his father in Williamsburg. He also worked as a policeman for the Morrisburg Police force and as a jail guard in Cornwall. He came to Brockville, about 1968.

He returned to school at St. Lawrence College, where he met Kathie Sayeau (nee Cowie). They were married in the First Presbyterian Church in Brockville, on October 25, 1976.

He worked at the Black and Decker plant in Brockville for more than 15 years until he retired.

The week after he retired he and his wife took their first trip to Nova Scotia. Three years later they travelled to Alaska with their best friends. Travel and tinkering with gadgets were two of the many things he enjoyed. His latest trip was with his grandson, Jonathan, to Vancouver in 2002.

He was healthy until May of this year when he was diagnosed with cancer.

Mr. McIntosh was predeceased by his wife, Kathie, his parents and his brother James Anson in infancy.

He is survived by one sister, Jean Pommerville, and his stepchildren, Alexander "Sandy" Sayeau and wife Doris of Stoney Creek and Pamela Galama and husband Stanley of Brockville, as well as grandchildren John and Stephen Sayeau, Justin Mayhew and Jonathan Bullock.

Family and friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel, Brockville on August 2. A service in celebration of his life was held at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Brockville, on August 3. Burial followed at St. John's Cemetery, in Cardinal.

Myrtle Eva Close, 80

Retired school teacher Myrtle Eva Close, who taught in Brockville public schools for many years, died unexpectedly on August 25, 2004. She was 80 years old.

She was born on the Island of Jersey, Great Britain, on October 8, 1923, and emigrated with her parents to Canada (Winnipeg) at a young age. She lost both her parents when she was young and was raised by her aunt.

After completing high school she trained at the Normal School (teachers college) in Winnipeg.

She met her future husband, Allan (Bunk) Close, on a train trip to Vancouver and they married in 1948 and settled in Ontario.

Mrs. Close began teaching in Kingston, helping to support her husband while he completed his engineering degree at Queen's University.

She taught in a variety of communities in Ontario, including Brockville public schools for many years, but the highlight of her teaching career was teaching at the Ontario School for the Deaf in Belleville, where she loved working with the children and seeing them advance in their studies and into adulthood.

After retiring, Mrs. Close enjoyed living by the river, spending winters in Naples, Florida, and enjoying the company of her beloved grandchildren. Prior to her death she was a resident of Sherwood Park Manor, enjoying the camaraderie of her friend Klaudia Gardner. One of the highlights of her time at Sherwood Park Manor was a daily visit of her "granddog Tiger." Her favourite activities were dinner with the family and a good game of cards.

Mrs. Close is survived by her daughter Lynda Sceviour and grandchildren Laura and Leah Sceviour.

She was predeceased by her husband, and son Allan (Jerry) Close Jr.

Visitation was the Irvine Funeral Home on August 27. Funeral services were held in the chapel on August 28 and conducted by Pastor Ian Kelsey.

Pallbearers were Laura Sceviour, Leah Sceviour, Jimmy Close, Baden Carr, Robin Cardinal and Marten Lacina.

Interment was at the family plot in Lyn Cemetery.

Robert 'Bob' McMillan, 76

Robert Charles "Bob" McMillan of Brockville, died September 6, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital. He was 76.

A former district manager for Prudential Insurance, Mr. McMillan retired in 1990 after 36 years of service.

He was born April 29, 1928 in Napanee to Charles Oswald McMillan and the former Eva Mae Arney.

On August 20, 1949, he married Margaret Betty Bush in Napanee.

Mr. McMillan started his career in Brockville as an agent and sales manager for Prudential Insurance, later traveling across Canada in their training division. He was later promoted to district manager and enjoyed 10 years in the northwest district of Toronto.

He was a member of the Trinity Anglican Church, was active in their men's club and belonged to the Eureka Masonic Lodge in Belleville. His interests included his home and family and he enjoyed traveling with his wife and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Margaret, his sons Jeff and wife Donna of Brockville and Jim and wife Anne of Toronto and daughters Jane Kidd of Calgary and Joanne DeGazon and husband Desmond of Toronto. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Jennifer, Jason, Andrew, Katie, Peter and Koby and sisters Betty Richardson and Phyllis Hart and husband Biff, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, D'Arcy and sisters Marjorie, Doris, Catherine and Audrey.

Friends and family gathered at the Barclay Funeral Home in Brockville on September 9, where a memorial service was conducted by Rev. Ron Horst of Trinity Anglican Church.

Burial followed at Riverside Cemetery in Napanee.

Memorial donations were directed to the Leeds and Grenville Lung Association and the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Lila Fawcett, 81

SOUTH MOUNTAIN -- Lila Dorothy Fawcett, 81, of South Mountain, died September 13, 2004 at the Winchester District Memorial Hospital.

She was born November 3, 1922 in Edwardsburgh Township to Thomas John Burnie and the former Idena Mae Robinson.

Mrs. Fawcett was a housewife and homemaker and also a volunteer for the Mountain Township Agricultural Society, the Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and she was named an Ontario "citizen of the year" by the Lion's Club in 1991.

She married Delbert Dawson Fawcett on May 3, 1941 in Sharly. He died August 18, 1979.

Mrs. Fawcett is survived by children Marilyn Bruce (Verne), Bud (Gloria), Verla Levere, Debbie Lewis (Miles), Bernice Speck, Barry (Diane), Brent (Darlene), Beverley Montgomery (Brian), Beatrice Duncan (Edwin), along with 18 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Surviving are sisters Helen Groskopf, Beatrice Smith, Stanley Burnie (Ella), Ruth Hall (Arno), Alice Conners (Reg), Lorna McGrath (Herb), and Hannie Futter.

She was predeceased by brothers Donald and Bill.

Visitation was at the Byers Funeral Home in South Mountain.

The funeral was held September 16 at Hulbert Valley United Church, where Mrs. Fawcett was an elder. Rev. Yvonne Willis officiated the ceremony. Interment followed at Sprucehaven Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Tom and Bill Levere, Glen Lewis, Ian and Adam Speck, and Eric Duncan.
