Kay Dillabough, 78, died January 13, 2005 at Brockville General Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born Catherine Cecilia Walsh on March 14, 1926 in what was then Bridgetown, near Newcastle, New Brunswick. Her parents were Arthur J. Walsh and the former Lillian Ann McLean. She was the middle child in a family of 10 children. Her childhood days on the Miramichi River were among her fondest memories and she often told stories of the happy times she enjoyed growing up in a large family. Throughout her life, she remained a Maritimer at heart, who loved sharing laughter with family and friends.
On July 14, 1978, she married "the love of her life, " Earl Dillabough and they moved into a house on Park Street, Brockville. She worked at the Brockville Psychiatric Hospital.
After her retirement, she and her husband pursued their shared interests. She was a longtime member of the Ladies Auxiliary and the Diamond Jubilee Club at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 96, Brockville. She was an enthusiastic euchre player and, with Earl, enjoyed many good times at parties, dances and dinners hosted by the Legion.
Always interested in adventure, she travelled with her husband on many of the day trips organized by the senior veterans club. She also joined him as a competitive dart player at the Brockville Armoury. In her earlier retirement years she shared his love of golf.
She especially enjoyed her daily summertime stroll with Earl along Brockville's scenic riverfront walk. She liked watching the activity on the St. Lawrence and took great pride in cheering on her great-nephews, Alexander and Brandon Farmer, in the Brockville Yacht Club student sailboat races.
Mrs. Dillabough loved to garden. She grew her own vegetables and herbs and made jams, pickles and preserves to give as gifts. She was a good homemaker, welcoming guests with memorable meals and baking sweet treats for her young nieces and nephews. She was also talented at sewing and knitting. She kept in touch with everyone by either a thoughtful telephone call, card or letter.
Mrs. Dillabough is survived by her husband Earl, sister Ethel Farmer of Brockville, brother-in-law Emery Matchett of Miramichi, N.B., and sisters-in-law Fabiola Walsh of Brockville, Verna Walsh of Toronto and Hilda Hutton of Prescott, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, brothers Calvis, Arthur and James (in infancy) and five sisters, Mary McAllister, Rosemarie Matchett, Sister Elizabeth Walsh and Eleanor and Joan Walsh, both in infancy.
Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, where the Ladies Auxiliary to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 96, held a tribute service.
The Liturgy of the Christian Funeral was celebrated by Father Tim Harrison on January 18 at St. Francis Xavier Church, Brockville. Burial followed at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, west of Brockville.
The honorary pallbearers were Ann Ashton and Helen and Walter Maud. The active pallbearers were Dwight Dillabough, Alexander Farmer, Paul McAllister, Ronald Russell, Dave Thompson and George Topping.
Memorial donations were directed to the Hospice of Providence Palliative Care and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Julianna Balogh, 81
PRESCOTT -- Julianna Balogh, 81, died January 31, 2005 after a brief illness with cancer, surrounded by her family.
She was born July 26, 1923 in Sarospatak, Hungary to Janos Kiss and the former Julianna Szabo. As a young girl she loved going to school and working on the family farm, always singing and happy, even when times were difficult.
On September 29, 1945, she married Bertalan Balogh in Tisacsermely, Hungary. In 1959 she and her family moved from Hungary to Prescott, where she worked renovating several area homes. She also worked at Prescott Paper Products.
She was an active member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and its Ladies Auxiliary.
Mrs. Balogh was known for her kindness and her green thumb. She welcomed family and friends into her home and was always happy to help anyone in need. She often brought the ones she loved together to enjoy the wonderful meals she prepared. In her garden, the flowers she grew blossomed in beauty.
Mrs. Balogh is survived by her husband Bertalan, her children Ben (Bertalan Jr.), Julia Minshall and John and his wife Michelle, and sisters Maria and Ilona in Hungary. Also surviving are grandchildren Janos Balogh, Rodney Minshall, Dawn Morton, Marissa Balogh, Kristina Conklin and Don Conklin, and great-granddaughter Alyssa Morton.
Friends called at the Chris Slater Funeral Home, Prescott, where on February 2 the funeral was held, with Rev. Ian MacLean officiating. Burial will be at Sandy Hill Cemetery in the spring.
The pallbearers were her grandchildren Janos, Kristina, Don, Dawn and friends Laszlo Horvath and Peter Adams.
Memorial donations were made to Hospice of Providence Palliative Care and St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Prescott.
Marjorie Warren, 84
Marjorie Lois Warren, 84, of Mallorytown, died February 4, 2005 at Brockville General Hospital.
She was born May 31, 1920 to Phillip Kelsey and the former Letitia Danby in Lyndhurst, where she grew up and attended Lyndhurst high school, graduating in 1937.
On July 7, 1944 she married Ivan George Warren in Seeleys Bay. They lived in Lyndhurst for six years and then in 1951 moved to Mallorytown.
She had managed the Red and White general store in Delta and later helped her husband with their mail route.
Mrs. Warren identified with Mallorytown United Church and was a member of the Mallorytown seniors club. She received the Pioneer Award in December 2004.
She enjoyed her home and family, doing crossword puzzles, reading, and growing flowers.
She was predeceased by her husband on December 12, 1990 and by three sisters, Myrtle Dillon, Hilda Kelsey and Grace Bryan.
She is survived by three sons, Werden and wife Margaret of Mallorytown, Roger and wife Vera of Brockville and David of Mallorytown, as well as eight grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on February 7 the funeral was held, with Rev. Alister Rose officiating. Burial will be at the Mallorytown Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Percy Gilmer, 91
IROQUOIS -- Percy Harold Gilmer, 91, a lifelong resident of the former Matilda Township, died at the Woodland Villa in Long Sault on February 2, 2005.
He was born July 28, 1913 in Matilda Township to James Gilmer and his wife, the former Lucy McMillan. He spent his early years working as a butcher, first in his brother Harry's butcher shop and grocery store in Iroquois and then in his own business in Prescott.
However, he spent most of his working years as a drover, buying and selling cattle and pigs in and around Matilda township. He knew and made friends with everyone as he travelled the country roads. He was well respected by the farmers.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Helen Fisher, of Brinston, and by his son Larry and wife Debbie, as well as grandchildren Timothy, Mathew, Shawn and Ashley, all of South Mountain.
Also surviving are his brother Dwight and wife Marion, sister-in-law Luella Gilmer, brother-in-law Delmar Adams and wife Muriel and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother Harry and sisters Della Hunter, Annie Adams and Irene Conley.
Friends called at the Marsden-McLaughlin Funeral Home, Iroquois, where on February 3 the Independent Order of Odd Fellows held a memorial service. The funeral was held in Brinston United Church on February 4, with Rev. Doug Carnegie officiating. His brother Dwight delivered the eulogy. Burial will be at Spruce Haven Cemetery, Brinston, in the spring.
The pallbearers were his three grandsons, Timothy, Mathew and Shawn, and three nephews, Bert Hunter, Jim Adams and Richard Gilmer, with Gordon Cooper and Floyd Thompson as honorary pallbearers.
Audrey Rochon, 61
Audrey June Rochon, 61, died January 10, 2005 at Brockville General Hospital with her family by her side. She had been living with multiple sclerosis and diabetes for 20 years.
Born June 8, 1943, she was the daughter of James Barrington and the former Sarah Hayes. She was raised in Athens and attended school at Glen Elbe.
She married Jean Guy Rochon on October 8, 1971, in Sacred Heart Church, Alexandria, Ont. She moved to the Niagara Falls area that year and moved back to Brockville in 1982.
A wife, mother and homemaker, she was strong willed and remained independent in spite of her illness until the last five years, when she required more care. She attended the day program at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital and was a member of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, the MS Society and the March of Dimes.
Mrs. Rochon is survived by her husband Jean Guy, daughter Dana Kirkland and husband Danny of Maitland and grandchildren Aaron, Richard and Cara-Ann Kirkland.
Also surviving are two sisters, Geraldine Chant and husband Raymond of Addison and Jean Metcalfe and husband Keith of Brockville, as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents and her sister Bernice Renwick.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, before the funeral on January 13, at which Rev. Gordon Mintz, of St. Paul's Anglican Church, officiated.
Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.
The honorary pallbearers were Gary Barkley, Leo Rochon and Rejean Rochon.
Memorial donations were made to Red Cross Homemakers.
