Robert 'Bob' Hartley, 63

Robert 'Bob' Clifford Hartley died September 19, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital following a short battle with cancer. He was 63.

Born November 3, 1940, to Clifford Lake Hartley and the former Beatrice Ruth Maxwell, Mr. Hartley was a life-long resident of Athens and area. He lived in the same house at 20 Henry Street in which he was born until May 1994, when he moved to a residence on Charleston Lake.

He was educated in Athens schools and on May 30, 1964, he married his high school sweetheart, Honey Virginia Smith. The couple had marked their 40th wedding anniversary this year at a dinner with friends.

Mr. Hartley was the owner-operator of Hartley Fuels from 1966 to 1996 and of Har-Tex Lubricants from 1996 to 2000. He also worked as a forklift operator at Procter and Gamble in Brockville for a short time and most recently with Tackaberry and Sons Construction as a scale operator.

Mr. Hartley was affiliated with Athens United Church and was a member of both the Athens Lions Club - serving executive positions including club president over the years - and the Rising Sun Masonic Lodge No. 85, for which he was a past master. He was also a member of the Tunis Shrine in Brockville.

He and his brother-in-law Rupe Green, along with Gord Mack, organized the village's first Farmersville Steam Exhibition 25 years ago.

Mr. Hartley purchased two steam engines over the years and enjoyed displaying them for the public.

Mr. Hartley was perhaps best known for his longtime work as a public education trustee in Leeds County.

He represented Leeds County on the amalgamated regional Upper Canada District School Board, after first being elected to the former Leeds and Grenville County Board of Education in 1982.

He spent 22 consecutive years as a member of the two boards, sitting alternately on finance and transportation committees.

He also served on the board of directors of the Ontario Public School Boards Association.

Mr. Hartley enjoyed traveling and often went camping, canoeing and took trips to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. His latest long-distance trip was to the Yukon in 1989 with close friends.

Mr. Hartley liked to hunt and fish around his beloved Charleston Lake, where the family winterized a cottage in 1994 and lived for the past 10 years.

He received Athens' Citizen of the Year award in 1994.

Mr. Hartley is survived by his wife, Honey, his sons Robert (Kevin), Walter (Scott) and John (Daniel), daughters-in-law Angela (wife of Kevin) and Susan (wife of Scott) as well as his brother Don Hartley of Athens and his sister Vieta Willows of Delta.

Mr. Hartley is also survived by five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Students from Athens District High School and Pineview Elementary School formed a funeral procession through the village for Mr. Hartley.

The funeral was held at Barclay Funeral Home in Brockville on September 22. Reverend Dolly Dikens officiated. Burial followed at Holy Trinity Cemetery, Oak Leaf.

Pallbearers were Les Sosnowski, Gerry Bell, Dave Blanchard, John Mitten, Charlie Smid and Tony Reuvers. Honorary pallbearers were John Dancy, Gary Murphy, Gary Denis, Dave Reid, James Barclay, Herb Scott, Dave Webster, Wayne Lawson, Victor Johnston, and George Tackaberry.

Memorial donations were directed to the Holy Trinity Cemetery.

Jentje Jonkman, 94

ATHENS -- Jentje Jonkman, 94, died February 26, 2005 at Kitimat, B.C.

She was born October 4, 1910 to Hendrik and Marjie Strijker in Stuifand, Holland, one of six children. She attended school into her early teens, when she began doing domestic work for a prominent family in the area.

She married Johan Jonkman of Hoogeveen in 1932. They lived in Hoogeveen until 1952 when they moved to Canada. During the war years, her husband went to war and her six sons remained with her.

After arriving in Canada, by boat at Halifax harbour, they travelled by train to Prescott. They were to be provided with work and a house in Throoptown, just east of the village of North Augusta.

The first few years were difficult for her as she did not speak English. Her husband and son Henk left the area to find work in Labrador.

Later the family purchased a big grey stone house west of North Augusta, where they lived for several years until they moved to Greenbush. After her husband's death in 1982, she moved to an apartment on Buell Street in Brockville and later to a granny suite at son Henk's home in Prescott, along the river. There she entertained friends and enjoyed the ships and the ducks.

She also enjoyed knitting, sewing, reading and studying the Bible.

Following a heart attack in 1991 she lived with son Bert in Brockville for eight years, then moved to Kitimat, B.C., to live again with Bert. She was admitted to Kitimat General Hospital in February.

Mrs. Jonkman is survived by five of her children, Bill and wife Truus of Prescott, Henk and wife Sandra and Albert and wife Betty, all of Kitimat, B.C., Bert and wife Pat of Brockville and Berend and wife Lorraine of Kitimat, as well as 24 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her son Ginus Jonkman, great-grandson Trevor King, three brothers (Albert in childhood, and Hendrik and Behrend) and two sisters, Margje and Marie.

Friends called at the Judson Funeral Home, Athens, before the funeral, which was held there on March 4. Rev. Nick Cornelisse of Bethel Christian Reformed Church officiated. Burial followed at Greenbank Cemetery, Rocksprings.

Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Diabetes Association.

In April 1964 he moved with his family to Williamsburg and settled in a home on County Road 31, where he lived for 41 years. He worked as a transport driver with Cooney Haulage in Brockville for more than 34 years and thoroughly enjoyed his job.

His leisure time was spent enjoyably camping at Pleasure Park on Graham Lake with his family and friends.

Mr. Walsh is survived by his sons Bill and wife Alma of Iroquois and Bob of Williamsburg, as well as grandchildren Stacy, Jaime, Erica, Stefanie, James, Dan and Jennifer. Also surviving are his brother Fred and wife Dawn of Trenton and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and his wife, Violet Walsh.

Betty Hayes, 74

Betty Margaret Hayes, 74, formerly of Greenbush and Frankville and more recently a resident on the Lyn Road, died March 2, 2005 in the intensive care unit at Kingston General Hospital with her family at her side.

She was born in Cobourg, Ont., on August 9, 1930, the daughter of Arthur Clarke and the former Gertrude Smith. She moved to Greenbush with her family in 1933 and attended Greenbush Public School and later Brockville Collegiate Institute in Brockville. After graduating, she took a position with the Mutual Life Assurance Company in Brockville, where she worked for 35 years.

In 1954 she married Richard Allan Hayes. They lived in Greenbush for 26 years, moving to Allan's family farm in Frankville in 1980. They then moved to their home on the Lyn Road in 1987.

She and her husband travelled extensively, visiting the British Isles, Scandinavian countries, Alaska, Florida and most of the Canadian provinces.

She was a member of Greenbush United Church until it closed and then became an active and valued member of Addison United Church. She served on many church boards and held many positions in the United Church Women groups in both Greenbush and Addison. She was also a member of Frankville Women's Institute and later Tincap Women's Institute.

Other interests included a group of close friends in The Lunch Bunch and other close friends who met to play cards.

Mrs. Hayes and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on August 14, 2004 at Addison United Church hall, with nearly 200 guests attending, followed by a reception and dinner at the Royal Brock. She enjoyed spending many hours planning each detail of the occasion.

She was born April 15, 1950 in Toronto to Luella Ault and was raised in Algonquin by her grandparents, Joseph and Hazel Ault. She attended Algonquin Public School and later South Grenville District High School in Prescott.

She met George Orr and they were married on December 11, 1966. She then moved to Fairfield Road, where she and her husband started and raised their family. She also took on the responsibility of the daily accounting for their business, Orr Electric.

She taught Sunday School at Manhard United Church at Fairfield for many years. She was also a member and treasurer of the United Church Women group until her illness prevented her from doing so.

She was a longtime member and treasurer of the Air Force Association, taking part in activities such as bingo, Remembrance Day and Christmas parades, trips, dinners and bake sales, among other fundraising events.
