WOOD, Sarah
After a 95 year journey our Mom, Sarah (Sally) Wood, departed this life on Thursday, July 10, 2014 in Barrie, Ontario. Sally was born near Catalina Newfoundland, the second of four children born to Elsie and Jonathan Edwards. Mom’s early years were spent helping her mother tend gardens and salting the cod that her father and brother (late Alex Edwards) caught. Life was not easy, but as Mom always said, they never went hungry. In 1941, Mom “emigrated” to Canada to help in the war effort, working at General Electric in Toronto. Her sisters (late Jane Tucker) and Nellie Boone soon followed. After the war, Sally met a handsome young soldier (late Maurice Wood) returning from overseas. They married in 1948 and had two children, Beverly (Leo Nikkari) and Jim (Christine). Sally and Maurice raised their family in Toronto and spent weekends and holidays at their cottage on Georgian Bay. Sally was a great cook (renowned for her chelsea buns) and took pride in growing her own vegetables and fruit. After Maurice’s passing, Sally remained in her home for 10 years, and then moved to BC to be closer to Jim and his family and Beverly in Washington State. She was very independent, living on her own until a year before her death when she moved to the Waterford Retirement residence in Barrie, Ontario. Mom loved spending summers at the cottage and enjoying the company of her five grandson’s: Emil (Bernadette), Jason (Tricia), Brad (Cindy), Andrew (Irit) and Geoff and her ten great grandchildren. Friends may call at ADAMS FUNERAL HOME 445 St. Vincent Street, Barrie on Saturday August 9, 2014 from 9 a.m. until time of Celebration of Life Service at 10 o’clock followed by a reception at the funeral home.Thank you to family and friends for their loving support.
