Dr. David Bayard TONKS
At the McCall Centre for Continuing Care in Mississauga, Ontario, on October 31, 2006, Dr. David Bayard Tonks, age 87, beloved husband of Emma Tonks (nee Gibson), passed away peacefully.
Dr. Tonks was well known nationally and internationally as a pioneer in the profession of clinical biochemistry.
Born in British Columbia, and an honours graduate of both UBC and McGill Universities, Dr. Tonks' illustrious career began at the Laboratory of Hygiene in Ottawa, (now the Canadian Centre for Disease Control) where he pursued his interest in quality control in Canadian laboratories. Dr. Tonks quickly established himself as a leading authority in this field, and his efforts literally revolutionized procedures and practices in laboratories across the country.
In 1963 he published a landmark article in "Clinical Chemistry", the scientific journal for the American Society for Clinical Chemistry, which to this day is cited in many new articles, nationally and internationally.
From Ottawa, Dr. Tonks moved to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, and then to the Montreal General Hospital, where he was Director of Clinical Chemistry until his retirement. A founding member of the Canadian Society of Clinical Chemists in 1956, Dr. Tonks served as Society Secretary, Editor-in-chief of the CSCC scientific journal and President. His contribution to the Society's certification process was significant, helping to establish criteria and examinations for new clinical chemists to raise recognition of their professional status. He was the first recipient of the coveted Ames Award in 1968, for Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Chemistry. CSCC successfully nominated Dr. Tonks for the Queen's 25th Anniversary Jubilee Medal, and was also awarded Honorary Life Membership in the CSCC. Dr. Tonks played an active role in over a dozen national and international scientific organizations throughout his career, particularly the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC). He served in various executive capacities, particularly in the setting of professional standards.
Dr. Tonks was a full professor at McGill University in Montreal, where he regularly reviewed graduate theses, and he has presented scientific papers at dozens of scientific conferences around the world. He authored at least 10 procedures manuals and 26 scientific articles, particularly in the areas of quality control and lead toxicity. Dr. Tonks has left his friends, colleagues and students with a magnificent legacy that will always remind us of his talents and accomplishments, and he will always be missed. Dr. Tonks is survived by his wife of 60 years, Emma (Gibson) Tonks and his sister, Beth Barker and Byron.
