Paul Larocque, 53

Paul John Larocque, 53, died June 12 at Brockville General Hospital of complications from diabetes, a disease he had had for 23 years. He had been on kidney dialysis for two years.

He was born July 1, 1948, in Brockville to Alexander Joseph Larocque and the former Doris Greenwood. He attended Commonwealth Public School and Thousand Islands Secondary School, and belonged to the Brockville Rifles while in high school.

He married Sue Shire in Trinity Anglican Church, Brockville, on July 17, 1971 and lived in Brockville all his life.

Mr. Larocque worked for Ross Brothers Texaco, Sudbury Nickel Mines and Phillips Cables, until its closure seven years ago.

He identified with Trinity Church, was at one time a fifer with the Orange Lodge Fife and Drum Band, and belonged to the Brockville Infantry Company reenactors for nine years.

He also coached bowling (YBC Youth Bowling Council) and five-pin bowling, umpired slo-pitch and loved watching sports shows on television, as well as westerns, detective shows and classic shows. He also called bingo at the Brockville Bingo Centre.

Mr. Larocque was predeceased by his father and a sister, Doreen Sicard.

He is survived by his mother, Doris Dixon and husband Gordon, of Brockville; wife Sue of Brockville; and three daughters, Dawn of Brockville, Angela of Ottawa and Dianna of Brockville.

Also surviving are three brothers, Robert and wife Jane of Brockville, Dennis and wife Linda of Kenora and Ken and wife Peggy of Brockville, and one sister, Patricia Young and husband Peter of Brockville.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, before the funeral in the Irvine Chapel on June 14. Rev. Ron Horst officiated, assisted by Rev. Faun Harriman. The Brockville Infantry Company formed an honour guard.

Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

The pallbearers were Rob McNish, Roger Lavoie Jr., Dean Connolly, Greg Young, John Chartrand and Tim Larocque.

Memorial donations to the Canadian Diabetes Society, Kidney Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society and Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Jean Anderson, 61

Jean Mary Anderson, 61, of RR 3, Brockville, died of cancer April 3, 2004 at St. Vincent de Paul Hospital. She had been diagnosed eight years ago.

Born March 28, 1943, in Edinburgh, Scotland, she was the daughter of Wilfred and Julia West. Her family immigrated to Canada from England in 1945 and she was raised and educated first in Carleton Place and then in Brockville, after moving here in 1957.

She worked on the assembly line at Parke Davis, later Trillium Health Care Products, on Parkedale Avenue in Brockville.

She identified with the Anglican Church and was a member of the Shepherd's Welcome Centre. Her interests included gardening, knitting, music, crafts, quilting and reading.

Mrs. Anderson is survived by her husband, Art Anderson; son Allan Jackson of Ottawa; daughter Julie Serre de St. Jean and husband Andrew of Lyn; and six grandchildren, T. J., Candace, Joshua, Dani-elle, Joey and Michael. Also surviving are her brother John West of Brockville and her stepchildren, Tammy Plath (Craig) of Brockville, Sharon Villa and Connie Denk and husband Robert of Rochester, N.Y.

Cremation was arranged through the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, and burial will take place at a later date.

Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society.

She was predeceased by her parents and grandson Zachary.

Kathleen Donovan, 69

Kathleen Donovan, 69, died July 1, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital.

She was born February 5, 1935 in Brockville to Christopher Storey Dodds and the former Anne Dickinson. She was raised in Brockville and attended Brockville Collegiate Institute and Vocational School. After high school she did some volunteer work at Brockville Psychiatric Hospital and was a nurse trainee at Brockville General Hospital for a very short time.

On November 27, 1954 she married Cornelius "Neil" John Donovan in Brockville and became a homemaker and mother of four children.

From about 1970 she was a switchboard operator for Telephone Secretary Service, retiring about 1983. She enjoyed travelling to Florida and Las Vegas and liked spending time with family and friends. She did jigsaw puzzles and watch movies, especially enjoying the movies of Shirley Temple, whom she looked like as a young girl.

She is survived by two children, Michael Donovan and Judy Davis, and two grandchildren, Jill and Crystal. Also surviving are her sister Jean Rothwell, six nieces/nephews and several cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, her parents, brother Johnny Dodds, daughters Christine Duncan and Connie Daubney, and grandchildren Charles and Benjamin.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, prior to the July 4 funeral at which Rev. Dr. Helen Wilson officiated. Pallbearers were Michael Donovan, David Duncan, Terry Mallory and Brian Davis. Memorial donations were made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Diabetes Association, Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada, Heart and Stroke Foundation and Arthritis Society.

Marion Beattie, 68

Marion Beryl Beattie, 68, died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) July 8, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital.

She was born June 8, 1936 in Ottawa to William Younger and the former Rebecca Birch. She was raised in Ottawa and graduated from the high school of commerce.

She worked for the federal government until her marriage to Donald Beattie on May 9, 1959 in Parkdale United Church, Ottawa. She came to live in Brockville that month and stayed at home to raise her three children and then babysit her grandchildren.

She was a member of Wall Street United Church and taught Sunday school at the Park Street Sunday School and Wall Street United Church. She also attended a Bible study group.

She enjoyed crafts, cooking and reading and enjoyed making gifts for her grandchildren. She belonged to craft groups and actively volunteered at the Brockville YMCA and the Brockville Museum. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Mrs. Beattie is survived by her husband Donald, sons James and Bruce and daughter Dawna Sands and husband Steve, all of Brockville, as well as eight grandchildren, Stephen, Cody, Curtis, Megan, Thomas, Connor, Ethan and Kristen.

Also surviving are three brothers, Norman, Neil and Malcolm, all of Ottawa, and nine nieces/nephews, as well as close friends Bev and Doug Smith.

She was predeceased by her parents.

Friends were received at the Irvine Funeral Home and Chapel, Brockville, on July 10 and 11. Her funeral was held July 12 at Wall Street United Church, with Rev. Dr. Alan Bennett officiating. Cremation and burial were at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.

The pallbearers were Steve Sands, Stephen, Cody, Jim and Bruce Beattie and Curtis Govard.

Memorial donations were directed to the Wall Street United Church Memorial Fund.

Brian Webber, 71

Brian O. Webber, 71, of Lyn, died of cancer July 27, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital after a long illness at home.

He was born in London, Ont., February 19, 1933 to Frank Webber and the former Hilda Turns. He was raised in London and in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. Returning to Canada in 1948, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served in Korea and the Far East.

On November 25, 1956 he married Marguerite Budden in London, and they raised three children: Geoffrey, born 1957; Curtis, adopted son of Metis background, 1968; and Sarah, born 1974.

Mr. Webber first worked for the Canadian Marconi Company and moved to various locations in Canada: Armstrong, Ont.; Senneterre, Que.; Thompson, Man.; Esterhazy, Sask.; and Montreal. Then he worked for many years in the engineering department of CNCP Telecommunications in Montreal and Toronto.

He retired in 1989 and moved to Lyn. Active in the Anglican Church of Canada, he served as treasurer of the Lyn church. He enjoyed the fellowship of the Cursillo Movement in the Anglican Church and was editor of the Fruit of the Spirit newsletter.

He was also an active member of the Corps of Commissionaires at St. Lawrence College and a volunteer driver for the Victorian Order of Nurses for a number of years.

He and his wife Marguerite enjoyed travelling in Canada, Europe and the United States during their retirement years.

Always an avid reader, he encouraged Lyn Library to expand its book collection. Hobbies he explored included stained glass art and pottery. He tended a beautiful flower garden.

He was a family man who enjoyed seeing the accomplishments of his family and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his daughter Sarah in 1978 and his son Curtis Webber, who died in an accident in 1991.

He is survived by his wife Marguerite; son Geoffrey and wife Jennifer Griffith and their sons Robin and Jamie; and daughter-in-law Lisa Dajcbauer and her husband Mike Spragge and children Courtney (daughter of Curtis Webber) and Emily.

Also surviving are his brother Leonard and wife Jane, brother-in-law Howard Budden and wife Margaret, and several nieces and nephews, as well as godchildren and friends.

Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on July 31 the funeral was held. Rev. Gordon Mintz, of St. Paul's Anglican Church, officiated, with Rev. Stan Riley and Rev. Ron Horst assisting. Remembrances were given by son Geoffrey, granddaughter Courtney and brother-in-law Howard Budden.

Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society and St. Paul's Anglican Church, Brockville.

Gerard Cauley, 78

Gerard Edmund Cauley, 78, died July 22, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital. He was born March 14, 1926 in Frankville to John Patrick Cauley and the former Ellen Agnes Quinlan. Raised in Frankville he went to public school there and attended Athens High School.

He travelled to Saskatchewan and Alberta twice as a teen to work on farms during the Second World War.

On September 15, 1951 he married Laura Teresa Donovan in St. Philip Neri Church, Toledo.

He made his living as a transport driver, beginning in Frankville with Edwards Transport and then moving to Brockville where he worked for Direct Winters Transport, which was later known as Motorways and then Kingsway. He retired 13 years ago in 1991.

He attended St. John Bosco Church, was an avid reader and had a keen interest in both professional and amateur baseball and hockey, especially any games his grandchildren were involved in.

He enjoyed reminiscing with the gang at Burger King and restructuring the entire Canadian political system over burgers.

Mr. Cauley is survived by his wife Laura and four daughters, Linda Kafenzakis and her husband Jim and Marilyn Washburn and her husband Gary, both of Brockville, Anne Cauley of Kanata and Jeanette Cauley of British Columbia, as well as seven grandchildren, Tina, Nicholas and Emily Kafenzakis, Randy and Gillian Besco and Matthew and Curtis Washburn.

Also surviving are three brothers, Ambrose and his wife Gladys of Brockville, Marcus and his wife Terry of Belleville and John of Brockville, and three sisters, Margaret Donovan of Philipsville, Sylvia Severson of Domville and Monica McCarthy and her husband Lambert of Ottawa, as well as 22 nieces/nephews.

He was predeceased by his mother in 1941, his father in January 1970 and brothers-in-law Raymond Severson on September 30, 1988, and Maurice Donovan on January 26, 1994.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, on July 25. The funeral was held July 26 at St. John Bosco Church, with Father Tim Harrison and Father Gerard Donovan (his wife's cousin) officiating. Burial followed at St. Philip Neri Cemetery, Toledo.

The pallbearers were Nicholas Kafenzakis, Gary Washburn, Curtis Washburn, Randy Besco, Matthew Washburn and Brian Cauley.

Memorial donations were directed to the St. John Bosco Mortgage Fund and St. Philip Neri Cemetery Fund.

Doreen Bertrend, 78

Alice "Doreen" Bertrend, 78, died August 5, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital. She had been a resident of St. Lawrence Lodge for the past year, having been in failing health over the past few years.

She was born October 26, 1925 to Clinton Morton Cole and the former Dolly Brown, in New Dublin, where she was raised and educated.

On September 4, 1941, she married Joseph "Elmer" Bertrend in Brockville, before her 16th birthday.

In her early years she enjoyed crocheting and taking trips to Myrtle Beach, Florida, and Virginia Beach with her family. She was an avid dart player and played many card games. She was a former member of the Brockville Legion Ladies Auxiliary and attended darts tournaments at the Brockville Armoury.

Her family and friends were her main interests. She enjoyed family gatherings to which she brought her specialty and famed foods: homemade baked beans, doughnuts and butter tarts.

Mrs. Bertrend is survived by her husband of 63 years, Elmer Bertrend; three daughters, Caroline Doucette of Kingston, Crystal Letts and husband Terry of RR 3, Prescott, and Mary Limbeek of Brockville; and three sons, William and wife Monique of Brockville, Albert and wife Mary of Tincap, Dale Bertrend and wife Donna of Brockville and son-in-law Kendal Young.

Also surviving are sisters Gladys Brontmire of Brockville, Grace Salmon of North Augusta, Jennie McNish and husband Harold of Lyn, Lila Leonard of Maynard and brother-in-law James Kluke of Toronto.

Also surviving are 22 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter, as well as many nieces/nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter Bonnie Young, son Terry Bertrend, sister Doris Kluke, brother Stan Cole and in-laws Irvine Salmon, Bert Leonard and Thelma Cole.

Friends were received at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, August 8. The celebration of Mrs. Bertrend's life was held August 9 in the Barclay chapel, with Father Claude Delorme officiating. Her nephew Bruce Salmon gave the eulogy and sang a gospel song. Burial followed at Manhard Cemetery.

The honorary pallbearers were grandsons Edward, Michael and Andrew Bertrend. The active pallbearers were grandsons Todd, Brant and Randy Bertrend, Kevin and Chris Letts and Steven Young. Memorial donations were directed to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

George McNish, 84

George Albert McNish, 84, died July 28, 2004 at Brockville General Hospital.

He was born in Brockville on December 16, 1919 to Thomas de Carle McNish and the former Susie Browning. He was raised at Yonge's Mills and attended Mallorytown Continuation School.

He helped on the family farm and then moved to Hamilton, where he worked in factories. In Hamilton he married his first wife, Lois Margaret Blakley, in Centennial United Church in April 1943. After 10 years away, he returned to Brockville.

He was self employed in poultry farming and the oil business. He owned a hotel east of Cornwall for 14 years, a car wash and a taxi. He also drove children for the Cornwall school board. After living 35 years in Cornwall, he came back to Brockville.

He was a member of Lyn Masonic Lodge No. 416.

His main interest was playing bridge, a card game he loved. He also enjoyed short trips in summer in Ontario and had travelled out west several times. He enjoyed gardening, too.

After the death of his wife in 1990, he married Winnifred Mary Chuter in Christ United Church, Lyn, who survives.

Mr. McNish is survived by two sons, Thomas McNish and wife Susan of Cornwall and Douglas McNish and wife Leah of Winnipeg, and several step-children, Peter Morrow and wife Barbara of Kelowna, B.C., Susan Hammond of Hamilton, Chris Morrow and wife Wendy of RR 4, Lansdowne, and Laurie Carpenter and husband Allan of Carleton Place, as well as 22 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are his sister Doris Beatty and husband Bob of Mallorytown and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his daughter Sandra Flaro (of Cornwall), sisters Alice Young (of Brockville) and Lora Bushfield, and brother Barnett "Barney" McNish.

Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on July 30 the Lyn Masonic Lodge held a special service.

The funeral was held July 31 at Christ United Church in Lyn, with Rev. Jean Baker officiating. Burial was to be at St. Lawrence Valley Cemetery, Ingleside, at a later date.

The pallbearers were Ron Murphy, Don Murphy, Bob Easton, Bud Smith, Joe Barrio and Bruce Weston; honorary pallbearers were Gerald Dack, Stanley Bryan, Reg Thompson and David Shire.

Memorial donations were directed to Christ United Church, Lyn, and the Lyn Masonic Lodge No. 416 GRC.

Lawrence Brennan, 69

Lawrence John "Larry" Brennan, 69, retired maintenance foreman at Phillips Cables, died August 21 at Brockville General Hospital with his family at his side.

He was born June 5, 1935 in Douglas, Ont., Bromley Township, Renfrew County. His parents were Dan Brennan and the former Katherine Rowan.

On September 1, 1956 he married Jeanine Lanctot at St. Francis Xavier Church in Brockville.

He had come to Brockville in 1952 to work for Fraser Brace at DuPont as an electrician.

From there he went to Automatic Electric while it was being built, then on to Phillips Cables.

Starting in maintenance as an electrician, he later became foreman, responsible for the entire maintenance crew.

In 1993 he retired to enjoy summer camping at Pleasure Park on Graham Lake, fishing, carving decoys, gardening and spending time with his family and his faithful brown Labrador dog, Mandy.

He is survived by his wife Jeanine, son Dan and fiancee Karen Moffitt, daughter Cathy Stewart and husband Dave and granddaughters Melissa and Brittany.

Also surviving are his sisters, Evelyn Cunningham, Leila Quigley and husband Jimmy and Alice Wensing and husband George, and brothers Emmett, D.J. and wife Joan, and Hugh, as well many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and in July 2004 by his brother-in-law Bill Cunningham.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, on August 23. The Mass of Christian Burial was held August 24 at St. Francis Xavier Church, followed by burial at St. Francis Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Dave Stewart, Brian Barnes, George Wensing, Dave Merriman, Alec Dow and Terry Hutton.

Memorial donations were directed to the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation and St. Lawrence Lodge.
