MATTHEWS At LHG Mitton St. Site on Wednesday, June 25, 2003, HERBERT SCOTT MATTHEWS, age 91 of Sarnia. Beloved husband of the late Charlotte Marie (Stuart), (June 29, 1992). Loving father of Robert, London. Dear brother of Lottie Taylor, Belfast, N. Ireland and Robert Matthews, New Hamburg, ON. Also survived by nieces and nephews; Jean & Dr. Roger Downer, Killaloe, Ireland, Arthur & Theresa Matthews, London, ON, Harold & Cathy Graham, West Lorne, ON, Lynn & Dr. John Near, Chatham, ON, Wayne & Nancy Stuart, Troy, ON and Joan (nee Matthews), Auckland, NZ. Herb will sadly missed by his friends at the Residence on the St. Clair. Born the second eldest in a family of 6, (2 sisters & 3 brothers) on October 20, 1911 near Downpatrick, N. Ireland, Herb immigrated to Canada in 1930. He secured supermarket employment throughout South Western Ontario with A & P and Loblaws. Stationed in St. John s, Nfld. from 1943-1945, Herb served with the Royal Canadian Army. Returning to Sarnia in 1946 he opened his own grocery business at George & Mitton Street and married Charlotte Marie Stuart of Chatham in 1947. In 1953 Herb expanded his grocery business to Matthews Super-Save in the Oak Acres plaza. Although he retired in 1973, Herb continued to garden with his son until 2000. Herb served on the advisory board of Industrial Mortgage & Trust (later Royal Trust). A long time member of Central United Church and the Central Century Club. Herb was also an accomplished painter in the mid to late 1960 s and an avid traveller. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at Central United Church. Interment Lakeview cemetery. McCALLUM - With great sadness, the family of RAY McCALLUM of Sarnia, announce his passing on Saturday July 26, 2003, at L.H.G. Palliative Care in his 77 year. Predeceased by his parents Gordon and Margaret McCallum of Alvinston. Ray was a loving and devoted husband to Sheila (Cassan). His drive, energy, and sense of humour will be sorely missed by his children Kathy & Mike King (Sarnia), Donna & Bill Peachey (Pt. Edward), Rosemarie & Marc Pageau (Victoria, B.C.), and Judy Wilson (Brandon, Man.). His nine grandchildren will greatly miss a loving Poppa; David and Devon Peachey, Jamie and Laura King, Brent, Amber and Chantelle McCallum, & Shane and Jean Wilson. Poppa will also be missed by his granimals Jessicat, Jaz and Sadie. Ray was a fun and loving brother-in-law to Margaret Atyeo (Toronto), Mary Stewardson (London) and Arlene Bourne (Petrolia) and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Ray loved to golf at Bright s Grove Golf Club with his pals Frank, Fred and Don. Ray was a Petrolia Town Council Member for two terms in the late 1970 s and enjoyed many special times with the Petrolia Fire Department Members. He participated in many Masonic Lodge Activities as a 32nd Degree Mason and Past Master of Petrolia Lodge #194 A.F. & A.M.; Past Master Lodge of Perfection, Sarnia; Rose Croix, London; Hamilton Consistory; Mocha Temple, London; a member of Lambton Shrine Club and held several offices in Noruh Grotto. In accordance with Ray s wishes, there will be no funeral services. A celebration of life reception will be held at a later date. THORSON - ANNE LOUISE THORSON, (ROGERS) of Trillium Villa Nursing Home, Sarnia, Ontario, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 4, 2003. Born in Plenty, Sask. March 9, 1916, she met and married Erling Thorson March 6, 1941 and lived the majority of their married life in Sarnia, Ontario where they raised their two children Douglas and Marilyn. Anne was an avid golfer and bridge player and was a long time member of Central United Church and the Sarnia Golf and Curling Club. Anne was predeceased by her loving husband Erling (July 1978) and daughter, Marilyn (August 1978) as well as brothers Sydney & Robert and sister Molly Rogers. Anne will be lovingly remembered by her son Douglas and wife Lynne (Maidment) and their daughters; Anne's only grandchildren; Leanna & Laura all of Red Deer, Alberta. Sisters Connie Rogers of Kelowna, B.C., Betty Baskier and Gladys Donnan both of Leduc, Alberta and several nephews and nieces will also sadly miss her.
