RAMESAR, Dr. Simon Carlton Leslie, M.D.,
born in Chaguanas, Trinidad, West Indies to Freda Sirjoo and Charles Ramesar on Feb. 8, 1924, and died at Kingston General Hospital on August 11, 2011 in his 88th year with his wife Anne by his side after a diagnosis of ALS. Beloved husband of Rev. Anne MacDermaid. Loving father of Janet Hough (deceased); Charles (Leslie Ader), New York; Tony (Tom Ripley), England; Randee (Tom Woodford-Smith), Kingston. Father in the spirit to Dr. Janet McCulloch (Kingston) and her family. Devoted grandfather and great-grandfather of Karen Hough (Chris Kurlicki) and son Everett, Ottawa; Christopher Hough (Heather) and son Owen, Toronto; Elena Ramesar, New York; Valerie Ramesar-Smith, Kingston. Greatly missed by brother Mikey (Nancy), Trinidad; step-granddaughter Robyn (Steve Carquez) and daughter Saleena of Portland; Crystal Woodford-Smith and son Colton of Kingston; step-son Dugal MacDermaid (Patty) and their daughters Julia and Alison of Newburgh; sisters and brothers-in-law Aileen, Debi and Alec Stalker (Vancouver); Joyce Stalker (Mike Law), New Zealand; Kevin Stalker (Sheila Mizera), Rocky Mountain House; and all their families. Sorely missed by his Chez Piggy Thursday lunch cronies, by his bridge partners, the Art Appreciation Group, and by many friends and colleagues. Simon attended McGill University pre-meds in 1942 and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sheffield, England, on Commonwealth scholarships. While in England he married Molly Silver of Montreal. Upon graduation in medicine he returned to Trinidad to practice Family Medicine. He immigrated to Canada with his young family in the early 1960 s to undertake further studies in psychiatry at McGill, where he was gold medalist of his 1965 graduating class. Simon came to Kingston in 1965 to begin practice in psychiatry in the Department of Family Medicine at Hotel Dieu Hospital, where he taught generations of medical students until his retirement in 1995. Simon had a towering intellect, an inquiring mind, and a joy of living that lasted until the end. He made many new friends at Seniors bridge games post-retirement, and travelled the world with Anne. His greatest and most generous love undoubtedly was for his family. Special thanks to the wonderful health care teams in Emergency, Kidd 7, Davies 4 Stepdown Unit, Palliative Care and Kidd 6, and pastor Vicky Fulcher, for their compassionate and dedicated professionalism during his sudden health crisis. Cremation has taken place and at Simon s request there will be no service. Inurnment at McDowall Memorial cemetery , Sandhurst, will take place at a later date. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the ALS Foundation, or the Kingston Hospitals Foundation, Mental Health Service, in memory of Simon.
