BERZINS, Voldemars passed away peacefully at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital in Ottawa on Wednesday, July 16, 2003. He was 92 years old. Devoted husband of Ilze Henriete Beldavs, dear father of Ilze and Andrejs (Lorraine) and loving grandfather of Christopher and Mara Lisa, all of Ottawa. Uncle of Janis Berzins (Latvia), Mara Black (California) and Rita Gibson (Arizona). Predeceased by brothers Janis and Arturs.
Voldemars was born on July 6, 1911 in the township of Marupe, Latvia, the son of Jekabs Berzins and Olga Silins. He studied at the University of Latvia, Faculty of Agriculture, where he also met his beloved wife Ilze. They both graduated in 1939 as agronomists and were married on May 30, 1940. (This past spring they celebrated their 63 anniversary.)
From 1939 to 1944 he worked as a scientist inat the Latvian Central Seed Export Agency. With the invasion of Latvia by foreign forces he was forced to flee, with his young family, to Germany where they lived in refugee camps for five years. During that difficult period he worked at a number of different jobs including as a school teacher.
In 1949 the family immigrated to Canada and his first job was as a carpenter at the Montreal General Hospital. In 1951 he started working as a technician at the Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada which at that time was associated with McGill University but later became an independent institute in Pointe Claire, Quebec. By the time of his retirement in 1982 he was a senior technical specialist and directed the Institute's Chemical Analysis division.
He regularly participated in professional conferences and published numerous articles in scientific journals. He received awards for developing new methods of chemical analysis, several of which have become international standards. He is a life member of the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association (CPPA), the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, USA (TAPPI) and member of the Association of Official Agricultural Chemists, USA (AOAC).
He was active in the Latvian community in Montreal, including in the Association of Latvian Student Fraternities, and as an executive in the Latvian Credit Union.
In 1989 Voldemars and Ilze moved to Nepean, Ontario where they lived happily and independently in their own home, traveled extensively in North America, and spent much time pursuing their lifetime passion of gardening. He was also a member of the Peace Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Ottawa Latvian Senior's Club. "Tetis" (Dad), as he was affectionately called by his family, will be greatly missed and remembered for his many endearing qualities, including his mischievous sense of humour.
No visitation at the funeral home is planned. At his request, his ashes will be brought to Latvia for interment in the family cemetery at "Beki" near Talsi. but tThe family invites friends to join them on Wednesday, July 23, 2003, for a memorial service honouring his life. The service will be held at the Peace Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church (83 Main Street at Lees, Ottawa K1S 1B5) at 7:00pm. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, a donation to the Peace Latvian Evangelical Lutheran church would be appreciated.
