Shalka, Kate
(née Ewanchuk)

Beloved mother, grandmother and aunt passed away peacefully at the Garry J. Armstrong Home in Ottawa on Wednesday, November 29 at the age of 96 years. Kate was born on her parents’ homestead near Andrew, AB on September 19, 1910. She attended one- room schools in Sniatin and Andrew, AB and completed her secondary education at Victoria High School in Edmonton, boarding at the Methodist Home for Ruthenian Girls and, later, the Hrushevsky Ukrainian Institute. She received her Teaching Certificate from the Edmonton Normal School in 1931. This was at the start of the “Hungry Thirties” and work was hard to find, but she was fortunate to get a teaching position at a one-room rural school at Deep Lake, AB where she taught for two years. It was there that she met John Shalka, oldest son of a local farmer. After a six- week courtship, they were married on November 12, 1932 and had a happy life together for nearly 58 years. Kate and John moved to their own place near Fort Kent, AB in 1932 and farmed successfully for 18 years. Because of a wartime teacher shortage, Kate returned to teaching in 1941 and taught at schools in the Bonnyville (Engels, Charlotte, Dirleton, Fort Kent and Ardmore) and Vermilion (Kitscoty and Vermilion) School Divisions and the Edmonton Separate (Catholic) Schools (St. Thomas and St. Kevin) until her retirement in 1973. Kate and John spent their early retirement years traveling (South Pacific, Asia and Europe) and spending winters with their daughter, Cecilia, in California before settling in Kelowna, BC in 1979. There they enjoyed the pleasures of a large garden, flowers, fruit trees, visits from relatives and friends and the outdoor life they both loved with time for more travel within Canada, the USA and abroad. After John’s death in October 1990, Kate remained in Kelowna until April 2002 when she moved to Ottawa to be closer to her son, Robert, his wife Lena and grandchildren Roberta and Philip. Kate will be best remembered for her natural sense of hospitality, a positive and cheerful disposition and a winning smile. She was also a wonderful mother, grandmother and aunt, good friend and confidante, an excellent teacher, highly organized and a master of “multi-tasking” long before anyone thought of the term. She was predeceased by her husband, John, parents, Ostafy and Maria Ewanchuk, sisters Helen, Pearl Hawreliak (Dmetro) and Lena, brothers Bill (Nancy), Mike (Mary) and Nick (Mary). Sadly, Kate was predeceased by Anne Poohkay (nee Shalka) of Calgary, her dear friend and sister-in-law of 75 years, on November 27, only two days before her own passing. She is survived by her daughter, Cecilia Burr, of San Diego, California, son, Robert (Lena) and grandchildren Roberta and Philip of Ottawa. She is also survived by in-laws Mary (Nick) Ewanchuk of Edmonton, AB, Edward and Emily Shalka of Fort Kent, AB, Katie (Joe) Shalka of Fort Kent, AB and Elizabeth (Martin) Shalka of New Westminster, BC as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives in Western Canada, the US and overseas. The family wishes to extend its deep appreciation to the compassionate and caring staff of Whitton House at the Garry J. Armstrong Home who helped make Kate’s final days as comfortable as possible. Family friends are invited to prayers and a Funeral Mass at Heritage Funeral Home, 2871 St, Joseph Blvd., Orleans (613-830-2305) on Wednesday, December 6, 2006 at 10:30AM, Msgr. Peter Schonenbach officiating. Interment will follow at a later date at St. Joseph’s Catholic cemetery in Fort Kent, AB.
