It is with tremendous sadness and loss we announce the death of our Dad on Wednesday, May 30, 2007. He was surrounded by his loving family. Predeceased by his wife Margaret (Pegi) Soame, cherished by his family; his sons Robert (Rosemary), Peter (deceased), his daughters Dede Fyfe (Toby), Diana Jane, and Deborah French (Guy). Dearest grandfather of Kim Castner (Huntley), Cory (Kristy), Crissa Harris (Jeremy), Casey, and Chaunty of California; William, Anne, Catherine, and Kiki of Ottawa. Beloved great-grandfather of Emma Rose, Grace Chamberlain, Tanner, and Ryder of California. Dad was born in Weldon, Saskatchewan in 1920. Shortly after, his family moved to Ottawa where he lived until the outbreak of the Second World War. He spent the early two years of the war as a flying instructor on Harvard aircraft. He did a tour and a half of operation on Spitfires with Desert Air Force. After the war, he commanded several squadrons and RCAF stations. He was a life member of the Canadian Fighter Pilots Association and a life member and director of the SHAPE Officers Association, Canadian Chapter. He received his early education in Ottawa and was Head Boy Glebe Collegiate. Eugene was a prominent champion skier and swimmer. He was an “A” category skier in downhill, slalom, cross-country, and jumping. He was an avid reader of fine literature, a writer, bridge player, and cryptic crossword enthusiast who travelled the world. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Sunday, June 3th from 2-4 and 7–9pm. Funeral Service will be held at St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, 125 Mackay Street on Monday, June 4th at 2pm. Interment Beechwood cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army, 306-383 Parkdale Avenue, Ottawa, ON, K1Y 4R4 would be appreciated.

Peacefully at the Queensway Carleton Hospital, on Thursday, June 7, 2007. Predeceased by her husband Alexander Forbes Henderson. Loving grandmother to Bruce, Leslie, Paul and Jennifer. Great grandmother to Zachary, Kyle, Ethan and Lauren. Sister of Wendell, Kenneth, Bill and Muriel. Private family service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Diabetes Association.

Harold C. Herbert - 06/07/2007

Peacefully on Wednesday, June 6, 2007 at the Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre, in his 99th year. Predeceased by his parents Emily and Alfred Herbert, his sister Dorothy (Merrin), his dear wife Alice Bailie, son-in-law Kevin Manion of Trenton and cherished granddaughter Hilary Alice Manion of Ottawa. He will be sadly missed by daughter Mary Alice Manion of Trenton and grandson Jared of Vancouver. Born April 17, 1909 in Ottawa, Harold served in World War II in the Governor General’s Footguards and retired from the Metropolitan Life. He was a man of few words, a dry sense of humour and an exemplary character. Thanks to both the staff of the Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre, particularly those on Rideau 2 South and to the Parkdale ‘family’ who have been so faithful to Harold. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Monday at 11:30am. Donations, in lieu of flowers, to either Parkdale United Church Music Program or The Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre, Rideau 2 South would be appreciated.

Author, World Traveler, Journalist, Humourist Born August 16, 1934 in England. A loving husband and father of 3 children passed away in his sleep on May 27, 2007. Survived by his wife Diane: three children; Bryn, Ian and Thane (Marie-Josée): and four grandchildren: Maxine, Daphnée, Gabriel and Arwyn : brother-in-law Jim Curran, nephew Stephen Curran and niece Jackie Curran, all from England; niece Valerie Matheson of Calgary. Predeceased by his sister June Curran. Occupations included: Civil Servant, Ex-RCAF, E.D. of Atlantic Association of Universities, President of Canadian Authors Association. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Wednesday from 5pm – 7pm. For those wishing, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society.

passed away peacefully on Friday, June 1, 2007 with his wife of 51 years Luise at his side. Egon and Luise immigrated from Germany in 1960 with their two young sons and had two more children here in Canada where they made their new life, eventually building and retiring to their dream house in Calabogie in 1986. Now Residents of Kanata for the last 5 years to be closer to family and grandchildren. Egon (Opa) is survived by his wife Luise and children: Klaus (Karen), Rolf (Emilia Torabi), Susan Foran, Peter (Sasja) and 7 grandchildren. Thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff of St. Vincent's Hospital for their care and devotion to Egon and Luise for the last 15 months. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod St. on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and on Tuesday after 10 a.m. until the Memorial Service in the Chapel at 11:30 a.m. Reception to follow at the McGarry Family Reception Centre. It is with great sadness that we announce that after a valiant battle with cancer and a heroic final round of golf on Monday at his home club, Hylands, Gord passed away peacefully on May 31, 2007. Born on December 31, 1930, Gord was the devoted father of Richard and Gina (Bruce) Manion. Poppa extraordinaire to Colby and Connor and “Poppa Gord” to countless others. Gord is survived by his brother Lloyd (Esther) of Kamloops, B.C. Gord was predeceased by his wife Louise (nee Jewell) in 1997. Gord was blessed later in life to have found his soul mate Rita Stoklosa (deceased April 26, 2007) who was his traveling and gambling companion. Private family interment. In keeping with Gord’s passion for golf, please join us for a celebration to honour his life on Tuesday, June 5 at 11am Manderley on the Green, 5920 Prince of Wales Dr. (Dress Casual).
