Campbell - At the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital on Monday, June 16, 2003. Nelson L. Campbell, a lifelong resident of St. Thomas, in his 65th year. Born in St. Thomas, January 15, 1939, son of Valda P. (Dalton) Campbell of St. Thomas and the late Lloyd C. Campbell. Brother of Glenda Newman, Idamae Johnston and her husband Ray, all of St. Thomas and Donald W. Campbell of West Sacramento, CA. Nephew of Melvin and Aleta Dalton of R.R.#4, St. Thomas, Maxine and Harry Daniel, Carl and Doreen Dalton, all of St. Thomas and Cecil Campbell of Aylmer. Also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends will be received at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas on Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m. where the funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Interment in Elmdale Memorial Park. Memorial donations to the charity of one's choice gratefully acknowledged.

Alway - Passed into the presence of the Lord on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital. Ronald N. Alway of St. Thomas, beloved husband of Mrs. Eileen (Fretz) Alway, in his 73rd year. Born in Lobo Twp., Ontario, October 10, 1930, son of the late John and Doris (Newman) Alway. He was a retired business and accounting instructor at the St. Thomas Campus of Fanshawe College and in earlier years was an instructor at the St. Thomas Business College. Mr. Alway was a member of Faith Baptist Church, St. Thomas, having been formerly active in a number of capacities within the church. He was formerly the treasurer of the Elgin Area Bible Club for a number of years. Dearly loved father of Brian Alway of Clearwater, FL and Virginia Alway of London. Dear brother of Edward “Ted” Alway of St. Thomas and his fiancée Erna Maurer of Pennsylvania and Harry Alway and his wife Dorothy of St. Thomas. Loved son-in-law of Mrs. Ruby Fretz of St. Thomas. Also fondly remembered by several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted at Faith Baptist Church, 109 Chestnut St., St. Thomas on Monday at 1:30 p.m. followed by interment in the St. Thomas cemetery , West Ave. Memorial donations to the Elgin Area Bible Club or the Millcreek Miracle Fund gratefully acknowledged.

Baird - Joan Wynne. Suddenly but peacefully in her St. Thomas home on June 14, 2003, Joan Baird in her 86th year. Much loved and cherished mother of Michael and Patricia (Wylie) and their spouses Shirley and Richard, dearly beloved grandmother of Paul, Lisa, Scott, Jennifer, Heather, David, Brian and Richard, and great grandmother of Emma, Rebecca, Cassia, brenna, Alec and Maren. Predeceased by husband Murray and son Douglas. Joan was born in Farnborough, England in 1917 and emigrated to Canada with her parents in 1920. Raised in Dundas, Ontario, she married Murray in 1938, and, with Murray, lived life to the fullest whether visiting with her children and their families, snow-birding in Florida or touring Europe. An independent spirit to the end, she will be sorely missed by her family. At her request, cremation followed later in the summer by a family service in Dundas, where she will rejoin Murray in Peace. Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in her memory are most welcome.

Demchuk - At the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital on Tuesday, May 27, 2003. Nick I. Demchuk of St. Thomas in his 84th year. Beloved husband of Nina (Rode) Demchuk and dearly loved father of Helen and her husband Ron Pyatt, Lambeth; Irene and her husband Ralph Johnson, Belmont; Betty and her husband Bill Fradgley, Sherwood Park, Alberta; Rosemary Demchuk and friend Daniel, London and Paul and his wife Sharon Demchuk, Markham. Loved grandfather of Colleen, James, Matthew, Michael, Brian and his wife Sera, Baubi and Tennyson and dearly loved great grandfather of Justin and Jennifer. Nick is also survived by two sisters and two brothers overseas and by several nieces and nephews. Nick was born in Poland, May 10th, 1920 to the late Ignatz and Anastazia (Kiwczun) Demchuk. Nick was retired and had farmed for most of his life. A Memorial service will be held Saturday June 21st at 3 p.m. at William Funeral Home 45 Elgin St., St. Thomas. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to the Cardiac Care Unit at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital or the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Else - At the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital on Saturday, August 16, 2003. Walter A. Else of Caressant Care on Mary Bucke, St. Thomas, in his 88th year. Born in St. Thomas, March 23, 1916, son of the late Gordon and Ethel (Toogood) Else. He was a retired employee of the Weatherhead Company of Canada Ltd., St. Thomas. Mr. Else was an elder in the Saints of Christ Church, a member of both the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and the Canadian Council of the Blind, an active amateur radio operator and a former Boy Scout Leader. In spite of the loss of his eyesight, Mr. Else brought pleasure to others by performing for group events and at nursing homes by playing his guitar and mouth organ. Brother of May Orr of Aylmer, Leonard Else and his wife Ruth of Hamilton, Raymond Else and his wife Donna of St. Thomas, and the late Frank and late Stanley Else. Brother-in-law of Violet Else and Bessie Else, both of St. Thomas. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Friends will be received at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. where the funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Interment in Elmdale Memorial Park. Memorial donations to the C.N.I.B., the Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Diabetes Association gratefully acknowledged.

Herr - Doreen (Caldwell) of St. Thomas, on Saturday, August 16, 2003, at the St. ThomasElgin General Hospital, in her 79th year. Beloved wife of the late George W. Herr (Nov. 16, 2002) and dearly loved mother of Carolyne Marsh, James and his wife Roberta Herr, Janet and her husband Kevin McLeod and David and his wife Faye Herr, all of St. Thomas. Dear sister of Norma and her husband Leo Byrnes of Niagara Falls and Ruth and her husband John Agar of Iona. Loved grandmother of David and his wife Cindy Herr, Scott and Lee Vandenberghe, Adam, Bradley, James, Jeffrey and Justin Herr. Sadly missed by a number of nieces and nephews. Doreen was born in St. Thomas, December 30, 1924, the daughter of the late James Emery and Carrie (Howe) Caldwell. She was a member of Grace United Church. Resting at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin St., St. Thomas where funeral service will be held Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. Cremation to follow with interment of ashes in Elmdale cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.

McCartney - Elizabeth M., at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital on Friday, August 15, 2003. Beth (Ness-Jack) McCartney, beloved wife of the late Duncan L. McCartney. Dearly loved mother of J. Edward (Ted) McCartney and his wife Sharon of London, and Anne Bond and her husband Martin of Goderich. Loving and proud grandmother of Peter, Stuart and Lauren McCartney and Geoffrey Bond. She will be fondly remembered by her many nieces, nephews and friends. Sister of David Ness-Jack of Woodstock, and the late Janet Barfoot of Owen Sound, and the late Bunty Gimbert of London. Beth was born in Owen Sound, Ontario, May 1st, 1916. She was the daughter of the late Thomas J. NessJack and Isabella (Manderson) Ness-Jack. Beth moved to St. Thomas in 1941, and had worked in an accounting office in St. Thomas for many years. She retired in 1981. A member of St. Andrew’s United Church, she had been a member of the U.C.W. at the church, and had also been a member of the Eastern Star, Central Chapter No. 57. At Beth’s request, the family received their friends at the R. E. Allen Funeral Chapel, 31 Elgin Street, St. Thomas, Tuesday morning from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. Funeral and committal service was held in the chapel at 11 A.M. Donations to St. Andrew’s United Church Memorial Fund, or the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. Interment will be made in Elmdale Memorial Park.
