DIXON, Arnold Rex

Born in Yorkshire, England on May 16, 1913, Rex passed away peacefully in Ottawa on Saturday, May 31, 2008, at the age of 95. Beloved and kind husband of Joyce for 61 years. Loving father of Ann McDonald (Paul). Proud grandfather of Heather McDonald (Brad Thornton) of Ottawa and Ian McDonald of Waterloo. Predeceased by his son John and his brothers Aidan and Oswald. He attended Lincoln College, Oxford, earning an Honours Degree in Law. During the Second World War, he served in the Royal Artillery and Bedfordshire Yeomanry and finished with the rank of Major. At Dad’s request, there will be no visitation. Private Cremation will take place. A Memorial Service will be held at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road (between Bayshore Dr. and Baseline Rd.) Nepean on Friday, June 27, 2008 at 11 a.m. Friends will be received from 10 a.m. until time of service. For those wishing, donations may be made to the Leukemia Research Fund (936 The East Mall, Toronto, ON M9B 6J9).

Coker, Bernard
Chief Petty Officer, 1st Class, R.C.N. (Ret’d), WWII Veteran
Peacefully, after a lengthy illness on Monday, June 2, 2008, at the age of 84. Beloved husband of Eloise. Father of Bill (Jane), Chuck (Elaine), Lynn (Susan), Rick (Sandra) and Carol. Step-father of Steven Macdonald (Suzanne), Andrew Macdonald (Debbie) and Susan Gray (Richard). He will be missed by his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. Survived by his sister Margaret McKinnon (Duffy). Predeceased by his first wife Phyllis. At Bernie’s request, there will be no service. Private Cremation. For those who wish, donations may be made to the Ottawa Humane Society.

Peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on Sunday, June 1, 2008, aged 55 years. Beloved wife of the late Doug Sawyer. Suddenly lost a great father, husband and friend. Stewart will be deeply missed by all. He was a Golden Glove Boxer, a Brooklyn Dodgers prospect, a great goaltender with Verdon Maple Leafs; he loved life and certainly lived it all. He is survived by his beloved wife Nancy (nee Brownhill); sons Stewart Jr. (Beata), Robert (Laurie); daughters Sharon (Bob) and Michelle (Bassirou); grandchildren Kareem, Emily and Matthew, Sean and Karly, Alex and Kim as well as by his former spouse Anne Watson and many nieces and nephews. Ross passed away peacefully, while watching the hockey game on TV at Orchard View Living Centre, on Tuesday, June 3, 2008, in his 90th year. He will be missed by many nieces and nephews, as well as great and great-great nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his brother Earl, and sisters Lorna and Muriel. Friends may call at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road (between Bayshore Dr. and Baseline Rd.), Ottawa on Thursday, June 5 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel at 4:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.

Ross, Phyllis Ruth nee Gallinger
Suddenly at home on Wednesday May 28, 2008 at the age of 84 years. Wife of the late John Moffatt (Jack) Ross. Beloved mother of John (Bonnie), Robert, Charles (Francine), and Caroline. Loving grandmother of Debbie, Sandy, Patty, Greg, Nicholas, Stephane, Philippe, Chris, and Geoff, and great grandmother of 6. Dear sister of Patricia, Edna, and Richard (Dick). Predeceased by sisters Dorothy and Kay, and by brothers George (Sonny) and Walter. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. A memorial visitation will be held at the Westboro Chapel of the Tubman Funeral Homes, 403 Richmond Road at Roosevelt on Saturday, June 7, 2008 from 10-11 am followed by a memorial service in the chapel at 11 am. Those wishing may make memorial donations to the Salvation Army.

Munroe, Eugene Gordon
Peacefully in hospital on Saturday, May 31, 2008, in his 89th year. Eugene leaves behind his daughters Susan and Elizabeth Munroe, daughter-in-law Russel Earnshaw, granddaughters Anne Carioti and Robyn Vink, and five great grandchildren. Predeceased by his loving wife Isobel, his daughter Janet Wilson and his son Douglas. Eugene was an entomologist by profession. He graduated from McGill University in Montreal and received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He came to Ottawa to work at the Experimental Farm of the Department of Agriculture in 1950. He devoted his career, both before and after retirement, to his research. His good humour and unfailing optimism will be missed. A private family service will be followed by cremation. If you wish to make a donation in memory of Eugene please consider CanaColl, c/o A. Davies, J. Anita (née Polito)
Peacefully, at home, on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 following a 10 year battle with cancer, at the age of 77 years. Loving mother of Mark and Glenn (Christine). Proud Nanny of Sarah and Keenan. Brown, John Sherman
Suddenly, on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at the Almonte General Hospital at the age of 84 years. Beloved husband of Beatrice Scott for 55 years. Loving father of Diane Groniger (Tim), Eric and Annmarie. Devoted grandfather of Jessie, Scott, Olivia and Luke. Also survived by sisters-in-law Cecilia Kelly, Louise Murphy, Edith Barkley (Dwight), May Boehnke, Florence Dickie, brother-in-law Delbert Scott, and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by a brother Thomas and by a sister Margaret Kennedy. Friends may call at the Almonte Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Michael’s Church, Corkery on Saturday at 11 a.m. Interment in the parish cemetery. Loving grandma of Angel, Dean, Alex, Leslie, Amanda and Anthony. Dear sister of Norma (Charles), Claire (the late Roger), Billy (the late Heather), Ray (Elizabeth) and Carol (Norm). Also survived by many nieces and nephews. McDougall, Brian

November 2, 1947 – June 6, 2008 Peacefully passed away after a lengthy illness, on Friday, June 6, 2008, surrounded by his loving family, at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital. Predeceased by his wife Helen (née McQueen) and his parents Vernon John McDougall and Roberta “Bertie” (née Houston). Devoted father to Cindy, great step-father to Jeff (Dodie) Torrance, Julie Torrance (Rick Hayter) and Laurie Torrance (Don Trowell). Loving brother to Brent (Joan) of Lanark, Barry of Almonte, Scott (Julie) of Carleton Place, and Stephen (Michelle) of Almonte. Dear brother-in-law to Ken McQueen (Sandra) and Cam McQueen (Debbie). Loving Papa to Adam Babineau (Julie), Alexandra and Taylor Torrance and Great-grandpa to Owen Babineau. Uncle to Ryan, Brent and Jenna McQueen, Geoffrey and Jonathan Simpson, the late Matthew, Josh, Ryan, Derek and Hailey McDougall. Dear cousin to Cairine Toshack. Fondly remembered by many friends. An avid outdoorsman, Brian spent much of his time fishing and hunting. Our heartfelt tribute to Brian is the fact that he carried on our wonderful family traditions after the death of our mother in 2002. At Brian’s request, there will be no visitation. Donations may be made in Brian’s memory to the Downs Syndrome Association.

Lavertue, Dorothy
Peacefully on Friday, June 6, 2008 in her 93rd year. Beloved wife of the late Cecil Burns and Nelson Lavertue. Dear grandmother of Jeffrey Lay, Richard Burns and Tracy Steele. Great grandmother of April, Stephanie and Jamie Burns and Matthew Cowie. Predeceased by her son Edward Burns, daughter Bernadean Lay, and brother John Harvey. There will be no visitation or service by request. Interment of cremated remains at United Cemeteries, Carleton Place.

Albota, Suzanne Claire
Suddenly and tragically at the Ottawa Hospital, Civic campus, on Saturday, June 7, 2008, at the age of 61. Beloved daughter and best friend to her mother Claire Albota (nee Therien). Also mourning her death are her brother, Robert, and sister-in-law, Ivanna, and her loving niece, Stephanya. Predeceased by her father, Victor, in 1996. Suzanne also leaves behind her precious birds, Zak and Nigel, which for her were like family. Many friends and relatives in the Albota family cared about and helped Sue to overcome her debilitating battle with rheumatoid arthritis. The family especially wishes to thank cousins Faith and Vic Albota, Henriette Almeida and her daughter Silvina (Jim), Marina Jivotovskaia, Diane Hartling, Lucille Piche, and Ruth Silbert, for all their love and support. Sue never complained about her chronic illness and always maintained a positive attitude. Born and raised in Ottawa on January 28, 1947, Suzanne Albota worked for the Communications Branch of the Public Service Commission of Canada, until her retirement in 1997. Suzanne loved nature. In March of this year, she moved to her newly built home in Gatineau (Aylmer) and was enchanted by the birds and wildlife that fed at her door, including a large black bear! In memory of Suzanne, please feed the birds and squirrels. Our dog will dearly miss 'the Bone Lady" and our cats will miss Sue's treats. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the centre de refuge d'Aylmer, the Humane Society of Ottawa-Carleton, or to an animal shelter or bird sanctuary of your choice. Special thanks to Dr Aimee Sarti and the Code Team for their heroic efforts, and to the doctors and nurses of the emergency department and internal medecine ward (B5), as well as to the nursing staff in B4 for their compassion and professionalism. Family and friends may visit at the Tubman Funeral Home, 403 Richmond Road, on Wednesday, June 11, from 7 - 9 p.m. (Prayers led by Father Ihor Okhrimtchouk at 8 p.m.). Service in the chapel on Thursday, June 12 at 11 a.m. followed by interment at the Bukowinian Ukrainian Orthodox cemetery.

Peacefully at the Perley Rideau Veterans Health Centre on Sunday, June 8, 2008 in his 83rd year. Beloved husband of the late Edna McKenny. Loving father of David (Joanne Mearns), Lorrie Mercer (Bob), and Michael (Elizabeth Somogyi). Also survived by 5 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and one sister-in-law Myrtle Brennan. Predeceased by his sister Gwen Card. Special thanks to the staff of Gatineau 2North at the Perley Rideau Veterans Health Centre for their exceptional care. Loving mother of Brian (Heather) of Edmonton, Maureen Bazuk (Mike) of Ottawa and Neil (Alida) of Toronto. Proud grandma of Dustin, Brenna, Bridgette, Michael, and Benjamin. Dear sister of Barbara McCaskill, Irene O’Neill, Noreen Glass and Ann Green. She is predeceased by her brothers John, Leo and Terrance. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nursing staff on C4 at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital for all their care.
