MURKY TAYLOR - The Guardian, April 30, 1982
P.E.I. LOSES MURKY - Prince Edward Island lost one of its better-known sports personalities Tuesday with the early and untimely death of Murchison (Murky) Taylor.
Murky from Nine Mile Creek, as he was known to many of the Island's boxing fans, passed away at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at 26 years of age.
He was a dominant factor in the Island boxing circle in the 70's.
Wilf McCluskey, P.E.I.'s foremost boxing authority dropped in last night to note some of Murky's accomplishments in his short but illustrious career.
Taylor held the Maritime Intermediate Middleweight Championship title in the mid-70's and boxed throughout the Maritimes.
McCluskey said Taylor came right up through the ranks, fighting in every division from featherweight to middleweight.
He fought in over 30 bouts says McCluskey, all as an amateur.
HE HIT WITH BOTH HANDS - He gave up the fight game a few years ago but McCluskey remembers him as a fighter who hit hard with both hands.
Murky was managed and trained for most of his fights by Joey Francis of Lennox Island.
Francis was a great fighter in his own day, holding the New England welterweight gold glove championship at one time.
Funeral services for the Canoe Cove resident will be held today from MacLean Funeral Home to New Dominion Cemetery

DANIEL ARTHUR TAYLOR - The Guardian, Tuesday, August 2, 1977
"In the midst of life, we are in death" was exemplified to a shocked and saddened community on Thursday, April 28, 1977 when a young, active, healthy child, Danny Taylor, drowned near his home in Nine Mile Creek.
Danny was born on January 27, 1971, the youngest child of Lloyd and June (MacPhee)Taylor.
Besides his grief-stricken parents, he is survived by his brothers, Lindsay at home, and Murky in Canoe Cove, also his sister-in-law Doreen, nephew Lloyd, step-niece Chris, his two grandmothers, Mrs. Daniel (Maud) Taylor, and Mrs. Arthur (Cassie) MacPhee, and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Although only six years, three months and one day old at the time of his death, Danny had almost completed his first year of school.
Being so much younger than his brothers, Danny was very special, and specially loved, by his parents, brothers, and all his relatives.
An inner radiance shone from Danny's blue eyes that told of his special nature. He was a very lovable, truly good little boy, who had an extraordinary sensitivity for others, an extra measure of tenderness and kindness, an absence of jealousy, and a wonderful loving, giving nature.
His death has left an emptiness in his home that cannot be filled.
The largely attended funeral was held from the MacLean Funeral Home on Saturday, April 30th.
Rev. Eric Fullerton conducted the service and read the poem "A Child of Mine".
The chosen hymns were "God Sees The Little Sparrow Fall" and "Safe In The Arms of Jesus".
Organist was Dr. Peter MacDonald.
Pallbearers were Kirk Taylor, Herbie MacLaine, Randy DeRoche, and Dale Gorveatt.
The principal, vice-principal, and teachers of Eliot River School attended in a body and served as flowerbearers along with Gary Taylor, Trent DeRoche, John MacDonald, and Mike Hogan.
Little Danny was tenderly laid to rest in New Dominion Cemetery.
It somehow seemed appropriate that a flock of wild geese stood and watched only a few feet away, and gently added their voices to bid farewell to this precious child.
Danny's own words to his father must be remembered now.
"You're just my father, Dad, you're not my Heavenly Father".
This dear little boy is with 'his' Heavenly Father now.

JAMES H. LeDREW - The following Obituary was published in the Guardian, Mar. 6, 1999, Pg. B12
Family and friends of Jim LeDrew, Nine Mile Creek, were deeply saddened to learn of his death on Saturday morning, March 7, 1998 at the Palliative Care Unit of the Prince Edward Home, Charlottetown, PEI, after a courageous battle with Small Cell Lung Cancer, lasting more than three years.
Jim was born in New Waterford, NS, the first child of Hubert E. LeDrew, and the late Dorothy (Duguid) LeDrew, and was brought up in Sydney, NS. His mother predeceased him on December 10, 1994 just days after his cancer was diagnosed. He is survived by his wife Judy (MacPhee), and son, Justin Curtis. He is also survived by his father, Hubert, Sydney, NS, sister Donna (Perry) Waye, Toronto, Carol (Andy) Chan, Marlene Bird, brothers Gordon (Buck), and John all of Sydney, NS. Jim was the dear son-in-law of Cassie MacPhee, and brother-in-law of Lloyd & June Taylor, Tom & Faith MacPhee, and Art MacPhee, all of Nine Mile Creek.
For many years he operated a garage at his residence, working at mechanics, autobody, and welding. His outgoing, friendly personality, his willingness and ability to tackle any job, his special kindness to the elderly, to children, and to animals, and his pride and pure joy in being Justin's father, will be remembered by all who knew him.
Jim loved to cook, and for many years Saturday night was 'pizza night' at the LeDrew house, often with two, three, or four of the neighbourhood children there, and always asking "Did you call Granny and Artie, to see if they're coming for pizza?" and "Do June and Lloyd want to come?" He loved camping, a love shared by his family for many years. An assortment of kids, adults, and pets, joined in the weekend excursions and summer vacations.
The following are excerpts from Rev. Elaine Smith's comforting funeral service: "If someone were to ask me to describe Jim...I would say that Jim LeDrew was a diamond in the rough. He was big, and he was strong, and he was very, very physical! He was a survivor. He could survive anything he told me one day...No one, not even Jim, would say that he was a religious man - but he was, and he would say, a spiritual man! A man with a deep faith in God - a God that would look after him, and a God that would look after those he loved, when he could no longer do that - a God that helped him bear the unbearable, think the unthinkable, and continue to live until the moment of his death! There are different kinds of victories, and different kinds of courage...but I can only say to you, that the way Jim faced his illness, provides us with an example of courage that we can live by for the rest of our lives...And that was his victory...Such a brave and victorious spirit does not die. He loved Judy, and he loved Justin, and he loved where he lived, and he loved living. Jim's love and influence will always be a part of Justin's, and of Judy's, and of our lives."
His courage in facing his illness was an inspiration to everyone who knew him, but especially to his immediate family - his strength gave us strength, and helped us to go on, as we faced the terrible truth from the beginning, about this particular type of cancer. With breaking hearts, we carried on together, because he led the way. He lived with great determination, hope, and cheerfulness, but with the courage to face the truth, and the strength of character to want to live each moment to the fullest, in spite of knowing the outcome, and in spite of the terrible physical, emotional, and mental toll of this illness - because he loved living, but most of all, because he loved us. We tried to follow his footsteps, hoping we would have the courage to never let him down. The strength of his personality, and of his love for us, remains with us today, and allows us the luxury of being able to feel that we are not completely alone - that somehow he is still with us, as he promised he would be - still leading the way, and helping us to go on, as we promised him we would.
Jim's largely attended funeral was held on March 10, 1998 from the Belvedere Funeral Home, with Rev. Elaine Smith officiating. The pallbearers were: Kirk McAleer, Joe Mitchell Jr., Francis Gorveatt, Leith Gorveatt, Stan Gordon, and Reg Walsh. Honourary pallbearers were Jimmy & Connie Betts, Lee Taylor, Angus MacEachern, Arlene MacDougall, Stanley Newman, Delwin Smith, Blair MacEwen, Angus Geldert, and Peggy Forbes. The congregational hymn was "How Great Thou Art", and the solos were "Amazing Grace", and by special request, the Hank Williams version of "Beyond the Sunset", both by Darlene Bradley. Flower bearers were Jason Taylor, Matthew Murphy, Steven Gorveatt, and Jim Fitzpatrick. Readings were the 23rd Psalm and Psalm 121. A touching tribute of remembrance to "Uncle Jimmy", was given by Lynn Hogan. Jim was tenderly laid to rest close to home, in New Dominion United Church Cemetery. It gave him great comfort to know that New Dominion would be his resting place, and we take comfort in knowing he felt that way. God Bless you and keep you Sweetheart till we meet again.

KEENAN - The following Obituary was published in the Guardian, Nov. 6, 1998, Pg. B12
On November 6, 1997, family and friends were saddened by the rather sudden passing of John Burns Keenan of Sherwood. Although he had been diagnosed with cancer a year previous, it was pneumonia that caused his sudden passing.
Jack was born in Hodgeville, Saskatchewan on December 10, 1927, the only child of Thomas B. and Mildred Keenan (nee Dockendorff). He completed his high school education in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and then became a wheat farmer in Hodgeville which he successfully carried out until 1957, when he moved to P.E.l. to begin his married life with Ethel (nee Callaghan) which they enjoyed together for forty years. They have three sons, Hilary in Charlottetown, Brent, Guelph, Ontario and Vince in Rotorua, New Zealand. His memory will also be cherished by his five grandchildren, Christopher, Tyler, Caitlyn, Tyson and Alyssa. Jack moved to P.E.I. to grow rye, in partnership with his brother-in-law, for a distillery in Nova Scotia. They continued in that line of farming unti! they took over the dealership for International Harvester line of machinery. He also worked for Massey Ferguson, Ford and spent the last number of years, before retirement with John Deere, at Reddin Farm Equipment.
From his wide experience with farm machinery, especially combines, he was a skilled mechanic. He knew a great many people, having serviced farm machinery from one end of the Island to the other.
He was kind and always ready to help anyone who needed it, especially when it came to farm machinery. This continued after his retirement and almost until the time of his death.
Work seemed to be Jack's favorite hobby but he enjoyed other things, as well. He was an avid reader, liked to play cards, watch television and chat with friends.
During his illness, he was visited regularly by his pastor Rev. Danny Wilson, who always had a prayer, words of encouragement and would stop to chat a while. He was also at his bedside during his last day in hospital to give him the last rites of the church.
His largely attended wake and funeral was held from the Belvedere Funeral Home to Saint Pius X Church, Parkdale. Fr. Danny Wilson celebrated mass and delivered the homily. Readings were done by his sons, Brent and Vince. The prayers of the faithful were led by his grandson, Christopher.
The choir of St. Pius X, under the direction of Marilyn Anderson, provided the music and hymns.
Honorary pallbearers were Albert and Theresa Mallard, Roy and Noreen Pursey, Jack and Norma Reddin and George and Edith Mill. Active pallbearers were Robert Sherren, Wilfred Clarkin, Allan and Gordon Dockendorff, Doug Havenga and Cecil Murnahan.
Among those attending included management and staff of Reddin Farm Equipment, members of the Fit Company Senior Exercise class, Parkdale teachers, and members of the Retired Teachers Association. Interment took place in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Parkdale. May his soul rest in peace.
