MISS MARGARET DICKIESON - Many friends were grieved to learn of the death of Miss Margaret Dickieson of Charlottetown, who passed away on the evening of November 6th after a short illness in the ninety seventh year of her age.
Miss Dickieson was a native of New Glasgow where she lived for many years, an active and honoured life among her relatives and neighbors.
Early in life she identified herself with the Christian Church at New Glasgow, of which she remained a member until her death.
Some twenty years ago she moved to Charlottetown where she has since resided with her sister, Mrs. Benjamin Williams.
Owing to her advanced age she lived a quiet unassuming life, seldom going abroad, but enjoying the friendship of a wide circle of acquaintances, to whom she was always familiarly known as "Aunt Margaret."
Born of the old Scottish stock of Pioneer settlers at a time when conditions were difficult and hard work the rule, she has shared in the develop ment of the community of New Glasgow, and has seen the transformation from from the forest to the highly cultivated condition of the prosperous settlement of New Glasgow as it exists today.
Her father, the late James Dickieson emigrated from the parish of Houston in Scotland, and afterwards married Catherine Stevenson a daughter of John S. Stevenson who was also among the emigrants.
Mr. Stevenson was a weaver by trade of the City of Paisley, and from him in her early years Miss Dickieson learned the art of the home manufacture of flax and wool in all the various processes.
Her skill in this work was unusual and her interest in the industry never fagged. Though changing conditions rendered such unnecessary, she retained her spinning wheel in active use until quite recently and her hand knit socks contributed to the comfort of soldiers at the front on many occasions during the war.
In matters of current events she was a keen observer, and a wide reader retaining her faculties almost unimpaired until the end.
In August last she attended the Centennial Celebrasion at New Glasgow as the oldest inhabitant.
Here she spent some weeks among friends and relatives returning to the city on her birthday, October 6th.
Though not seriously ill she had been in rather delicate health for some time and despite the care and attention bestowed upon her in an effort "to husband out life's taper at its close" she contracted a cold which developed and after about a week her gentle spirit peacefully passed to its Maker.
The surviving members of the family are Charles and Arthur of New Glasgow, James of Charlottetown, Andrew of Vancouver, William of San Francisco and Mrs. Williams of Charlottetown.
The funeral took place on Monday 8th, inst., from the residence of Mr. Arthur Dickieson, the old homestead to New Glasgow cemetery.
A large gathering of friends from far and near assembled to pay their last tribute of respect, and followed the remains to their resting place, her nephews acting as pall bearers.
Rev. W.S. Hard ing, minister of the Christian Church at Summerside and Rev. H. Mahon of Charlottetown conducted the services.

VESEY - Mrs. Heath Vesey -- Few deaths have caused such sincere sorrow as that which occurred in the community of York in the passing of N. Orlo Vesey at the P.E.I. Hospital on Friday, July 11th after a prolonged illness of over three years which she bore with patience and Christian fortitude.
She was lovingly cared for by her devoted family during this period and all possible medical aid and care procured for her comfort by her son Arthur, with whom she resided.
She will always be missed in the community where she took such a keen interest and active part in all church and community welfare. At an early age she became a member of the York Methodist Church, later the United Church, she was a life member of the Woman's Missionary Society, a valued member of the choir and for a time organist. She organized and was the beloved leader of the Mission Circle, which she always welcomed to her home where she was known as "Aunt Orlo" to all the boys and girls.
She loved to entertain young people and they will always remember the good times enjoyed at sing songs and other gatherings and the Christian influence she exercised overall.
Born at York 65 years ago, she was the daughter of the late Amos West and Mary Drake and in 1904 was married to Heath E.O. Vesey, who predeceased her 14 years ago.
She leaves to mourn one daughter, Mary, Mrs. Harold Metcalfe of Dartmouth, N.S. and one son, Arthur on the homestead. She is also survived by two sisters, one brother and three grandsons.
She was laid to rest in York cemetery; a short service in her home was followed by a service in the York United Church by her pastor, Rev. J.A. Nicholson, who frequently visited her during her long illness. Assisting at the funeral service was Rev. F.H. Littlejohns, a former pastor, and Rev. Thos. Wilson of West Covehead.
The pallbearers were: Messrs. Ollie Brown, Minto Foster, Frank Vessey, Leigh Vessey, Finlay Drake and Wallace Mallett. The very large number attending the funeral, the beautiful flowers, numerous letters of sympathy all show the love and regard in which the deceased was held.

DIED on Tuesday last, at Letchet Mills, York River, Mr. David Moore, senior, aged 82 years, esteemed by all who knew him, and particularly by his numerous family, who now lament their loss.
His philanthropy in administering medicine to the sick and afflicted, in many cases without fee or reward, will be long remembered by many of the inhabitants of this Island.

BERNARD - Guardian - 15 March 1939
Oldest Resident Of The Island Died Today
William Bernard of Hunter River was in his 108th Year. He Came to This Province a Century Ago.
The oldest resident of Prince Edward Island, William Bernard, of Hunter River, died this morning at the home of his son Walter, after a comparatively brief illness, being confined to his bed for only two or three days.
Mr. Bernard was born in Devonshire, England on January 24, 1832, and was therefore in his 108th year.
At the age of seven he came to the Island with his parents, who settled at Hunter River, and where his father built the original log cabin where the house in which he passed away now stands.
He was a man of temperate habits and a believer in moderation, and to these qualities and to his sturdy physique, inherited from his stalwart British ancestors, may be attributed the long span of years with which he was blessed.
He lived about one mile east of Hunter River and was accustomed to walk from his home to the village daily in favorable weather up to last fall.
He retained almost to the very last, in a remarkable degree, his mental and physical powers, and his eyesight remained almost unimpaired up to his last year.
He was a wheelwright by trade, built one of the first wharves in Charlottetown, and also worked on the railway.
On January 24, 1938, he celebrated his 106th birthday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Hannah Whitlock, Hunter River, and at that time it was noted that he was remarkably alert and active and did not give the impression that he had passed the century mark.
An incident occurred on that evening which bore out that impression.
Among the guests was a lady who had not previously known the Bernard family, and in the course of the festivities she remarked to a lady sitting near her on the absence of the old gentleman they had come to see.
The "absent" one, by the way, just passed in front of her the better to see and hear the musicians playing in the adjoining room but so youthful were his movements that she could not associate him with the object of her visit.
He was twice married and had thirteen children, forty-four grandchildren, seventy-three great grandchildren and nineteen great, great grandchildren.
The surviving sons and daughters are as follows: George and John Bernard, O'Leary; William, Henry, Walter, Silas Bernard and Mrs. Hannah Whitlock, Hunter River; Mrs. Joseph Grant and Mrs. Joseph Lessard, Concord, N.H.
The funeral will probably be held on Thursday.

MOYNAGH MCQUAID - Charlottetown Herald, Weds., 29 Aug., 1888
Died at Souris, on the 5th inst., Mary, beloved wife of James Moynagh, in the 73rd year of her age.
Deceased was a sister of Francis McQuaid, Esq., of Pisquid, and James McQuaid, now a resident of Minneapolis, and emigrated to this Island in the year 1830 in the ship Corsair, chartered as an emigrant ship by the Rev. Father John McDonald for those intending to settle on the Tracadie estate.
She was a resident of Souris for forty years, and was known for her mild and gentle disposition, kindness and hospitality to the travelling public.
The funeral was attended by a large concourse of acquaintances of all creeds.
Requiescat in pace.
