Annamarie (Anka) Voticky

VOTICKY, Annamarie (Anka) (nee Kanturek). Peacefully, on Monday, June 16, 2014, three weeks short of her one hundred and first birthday, she has now joined her beloved husband of more than forty years, Arnold, in a final rest. Loving mother and mother-in-law of Milan and Kacha Voticky of Etobicoke, Ontario, Michael and Nancy Voticky of Austin, Texas, Vera and Norman Cohen of Côte Saint-Luc. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Anka was born in Brandýs nad Labem in the Czech Republic, and lived a full and exciting life. In January 1940, she threw a chair at a Nazi Gestapo Agent, who was arresting her beloved father Max, and lived to talk about it! In April 1940, Arnold and Anka led an exodus worthy of Moses from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, through Italy, to China, which saved the lives of fifteen family members. All the family members who could not or chose not to leave perished in the Holocaust. Her family survived the Holocaust in Japanese-occupied and controlled Hong Kua Ghetto in Shanghai. Her family returned to Czechoslovakia in August 1946 and Anka and Arnold again led a family exodus to Canada after the Communist Coup d’état in February 1948 (that is one exodus more than Moses!). This second one probably saved even more lives. In Canada, Anka worked with the Czech refugees in Canada in 1968, after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, followed by volunteer work for twenty-five years with senior citizens, through the Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors in Montreal. In her sixties, she took up Bridge and became a top calibre player and coach, and she continued to play until her one hundredth year. Anka Voticky was a tough, brave woman, an intelligent and sharing human being, who did a lot of good in her life, and, together with Arnold, they saved many lives and improved many others. Her twenty-four direct living descendants would not be here today if it were not for them. In her nineties, she wrote “Knocking on Every Door”, her memoirs of the Holocaust that were published by the Arieli Foundation. She will now rest in peace with her beloved Arnold. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Friday, June 20 at 10:00 a.m. Shiva in Chicago. Contributions in Anka’s memory may be made to the “Annamarie Voticky Memorial Fund” c/o the Jewish General Hospital Foundation, (514) 340-8251.
