B. Robert Benson
B. ROBERT BENSON. 1922 – 2014. Passed away Thursday, December 25, 2014. Beloved husband of the late Norma Betty Grover for sixty years. Loving father and father-in-law of Peter and Marina of Toronto, Jeffrey and Michele of Portland, ME, Wendy and the late Rodney Dickel of Ottawa. Cherished grandfather of David, Joseph and Noah Benson of Toronto, Sophie and Esme Benson of Portland, ME, Sarah and Kayla Mark of Ottawa. Dear brother of Richard Benson of New York, the late Donald Benson; and brother-in-law of Marvyn and Bernice Grover, the late Geraldine and the late Sydney Lithwick. Born and raised during his early years in New York City, Bob was the eldest of three sons to Henry and Bertha Benson. After the Great Crash, his family moved to Montreal where he graduated from Westmount High School with brilliant results, standing 11th over-all in the Province of Quebec and 1st in Latin (highest grade ever over a ten-year period). After being accepted by Harvard, Yale and the Wharton School of Business, he decided to go to Harvard University for a liberal arts education, obtaining his A.B. degree in 1943 (economics); he continued his studies at the Columbia School of Business and then, as mature student, entered law school at McGill where he graduated in 1958 with his B.C.L degree (as a father of three and president of his class). He regularly and enthusiastically participated in class reunions both at Harvard and McGill, most recently, with his classmates, leading the Commencement procession at his 70th Harvard reunion in 2013.During World War II, after signing up for the Royal Canadian Air Force (radar), he was made a First Officer at the radar station in Gander, Newfoundland where he tracked German submarines. Although he never flew planes during the war, he was fascinated by them and soon became an avid and accomplished amateur pilot. After the war, he worked first for Lever Brothers in New York City and then practised law in Montreal, starting with the former firm of Phillips, Vineberg, Goodman and then with small law offices or on his own for over 30 years. Fluently bilingual, he was appointed Queen’s Council. From his early teens, Bob was deeply passionate and exceptionally knowledgeable about classical music, photography, and ham radio and he pursued these interests throughout his entire life. He was a photographer for the Harvard Crimson, acted as chief counsel to the Canadian Amateur Radio Relay League, and was the host and creator of a weekly Montreal classical music FM radio programme through which he introduced the city to later classical music, such as Mahler. With the encouragement and example of his beloved wife Norma Betty, he became an avid skier and horseback rider, continuing to ski until his 86th year. Among his community interests, he was particularly active with the Canadian Weizmann Society to which he was deeply committed. At 92 and living on his own in his downtown condominium, he was still happy and able to participate with zest in exercise classes several times a week, drive on his own, do his own cooking and shopping, regularly attend concerts and films – sharing new experiences with others and with them enjoying and still exploring with curiosity and enthusiasm the city that was his home for over eighty years. But beyond all his many interests, pursuits and passions, from first to last, his one overriding love was for his family. Words cannot express how deeply he will be missed by us. Special thanks to Dr. Jeremy Grushka and the doctors, nurses and staff of the ICU at the Montreal General Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion, as well as to Drs. Julian Falutz and Ariane Marelli for their unwavering help and support. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Monday, December 29 at 2 p.m. Burial at Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom Congregation Section, Mount Royal Cemetery, 1297 ch. de la Forêt.
