Rachel Goldstein
GOLDSTEIN, Rachel. December 14, 1946 – January 17, 2015. It is with great sadness and deep love that Rachel's family announces her passing at the age of sixty-eight, on Saturday, January 17, 2015, at home in Montreal, surrounded by her loved ones. She is survived by her loving husband of twenty-eight years, Jim Elkind; her children, Aron Angel (Jane) of Los Angeles and Sally Goldstein-Elkind (Kevin) of Boston; her sisters, Rosie (Mark Hardy) and Adele (Ruby Friedman); and sister-in-law, Carol Elkind. Rachel was the oldest daughter of the late Majer and the late Hala Goldstein, both Holocaust survivors. Rachel will be missed by her nephews and nieces, Jamie (Joi), Ira (Sarah) and Jacob Hardy, Joshua (Sari), Hannah and Noah Friedman, and Zachary Poll, and many cousins and dear friends in Canada, US and Israel. Rachel was born in a displaced person’s camp in St. Ottilien, Germany. At the age of two, she moved to La Paz, Bolivia, with her parents. Five years later, in 1953 the family immigrated to Canada and settled in Montreal, where Rachel completed her education with a degree in English Literature (BA 1970) and a Diploma in Education in 1972, both from McGill University. In 1976, Rachel moved to Boston where she raised her children, studied communications, and worked for Facing History and Ourselves, an organization which builds curriculum and professional development for educators to teach about the Holocaust and genocide. Rachel and Jim moved to Montreal in the summer of 2014 to be closer to family as she struggled with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Rachel was a teacher, writer, artist, and a published poet. She loved family, friends, words, witty repartee, and Jewish traditions. Special thanks to Rachel’s ALS doctors and teams in both Boston (Dr. Seward Rutkove, Dr. Robert Thomas and the Beth Israel Hospital ALS Clinic) and Montreal (Dr. Angela Genge and the Neuro ALS Clinic), CLSC Metro, particularly Valerie Vachon, Respiratory Technician, and her caregivers Roseanne, Grace, Rhobie, Michelle, and Susan. Joseph Z. Feller
FELLER, Joseph Z. With dignity at his home in Ottawa, Thursday, January 15, 2015, age 98. Cherished husband of the late Betty for 71 years. Treasured father and father-in-law of Connie-Gail (late Nathaniel Salomon), Ian (Debby Zweig), and Donna-Lee (David Kauffman). Devoted Zaida of Marshal (Julie Ann) Salomon (and the late Stacey Arbeiter); Margot Salomon (Martin Scheinin), Justin Salomon, Wendy Kauffman (Natan Treitel), and Adam (Deborah) Kauffman. Blessed with nine precious great-grandchildren, loving nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Predeceased by siblings Sarah, Eddy and Henry Feller. From humble beginnings, he forged a memorable business. Joe Feller Ltd., which began in 1937 as a tiny shop in Ottawa, grew into the largest men's clothing store in Canada by 1955 – internationally recognized for setting new trends in retail and fashion, which continue to this day. Honesty and integrity were his hallmarks. Joe never forgot his heritage. He was a patron of the Ottawa Civic Hospital, a founding member of the Council of Christians and Jews and supported charities and institutions in Ottawa, Florida and Israel. He was generous to those in need. Dear to Betty and Joe's hearts were Hebrew University, where they endowed scholarships and facilities, and Magen David Adom, to which they donated an ambulance. Charismatic, funny, creative, a sportsman, photographer, and respected mentor to his family, friends and associates, Joe has left us to join his lifelong love, Betty. Funeral service will be held at Jewish Memorial Chapel, 1771 Cuba Avenue, Ottawa K1G 1L7 on Sunday, January 18, 2015 at 1 p.m. Burial at Jewish Memorial Gardens, 2692 Bank St. Shiva at his home in Ottawa 3:30 - 5:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 18 and 10 a.m. - 12 noon on Monday. Zwi (Harry) Waserman
WASERMAN, Zwi (Harry) Dec. 25, 1926 - Jan. 15, 2015 Passed away peacefully in his eighty-ninth year, in Florida. Known as “Mr. Fix-It”, he had the remarkable capacity for ingenious solutions to any problem; yet he was unable to fix his broken heart after the passing of Rachel, his beloved wife of over sixty-four years, several months ago. He survived the Holocaust, but his parents, grandparents, six siblings, aunts, uncles and most cousins perished. His undaunted spirit helped him overcome many of life's terrible challenges. Missed by his many friends, borne of his helpfulness and congeniality. Adored and treasured father and father-in-law of Jack and Susan, and Elan. Loving Zaida of Jessica and Alex, Sam and Andrea, Daniel and Naomi, and Rebecca. Proud great-grandfather of Annabel Rose. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his nieces, nephews, family and friends in North America, Europe and Israel. The family would like to thank the staff at Aventura Hospital.
