GODEL GOMBOS, Margit (nee Zoldan). Peacefully, in her ninety-third year, on Saturday, January 17, 2015. Wife of the late Bela Gombos and the late Martin Godel. Adored mother, best friend and mother-in-law of Eva and the late Dubby Dubman. Cherished mother and mother-in-law of Leslie and Cheryl Gombos. Dearest grandmother of Alexandra and Mark Gombos. Dear sister and sister-in-law of Edith and the late Leslie Hirsch, Sidy and the late Teddy Zoltan, Andre and Eva Zoldan, the late Jeno and the late Margaret Zoldan, the late Lily Kohn. Predeceased by her parents and three siblings who perished in the Holocaust. Sadly mourned by her nieces, nephews, family and friends. Theodore Lionel Sourkes

On Saturday, January 17, 2015, in his ninety-sixth year. Beloved husband of Shena Rosenblatt Sourkes, and father of Barbara, Myra (Richard Lewin) and the late Doreen. Devoted grandfather of Eric, David and Talia Jade. Predeceased by his parents, Fanny Golt and Isadore Sourkes, and his brother Joseph Sourkes. Dr. Sourkes was Professor Emeritus at McGill University, Departments of Psychiatry, Biochemistry and Pharmacology, Officer of the Order of Canada and recipient of the Wilder Penfield Prix du Québec. A loyal friend and moral compass to generations of family, friends, students and colleagues. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Tuesday, January 20 at 1:45 p.m. Burial at the Montreal Workers’ Circle Cemetery, de la Savane. Rachel Goldstein

GOLDSTEIN, Rachel. December 14, 1946 – January 17, 2015. It is with great sadness and deep love that Rachel's family announces her passing at the age of sixty-eight, on Saturday, January 17, 2015, at home in Montreal, surrounded by her loved ones. She is survived by her loving husband of twenty-eight years, Jim Elkind; her children, Aron Angel (Jane) of Los Angeles and Sally Goldstein-Elkind (Kevin) of Boston; her sisters, Rosie (Mark Hardy) and Adele (Ruby Friedman); and sister-in-law, Carol Elkind. Rachel was the oldest daughter of the late Majer and the late Hala Goldstein, both Holocaust survivors. Rachel will be missed by her nephews and nieces, Jamie (Joi), Ira (Sarah) and Jacob Hardy, Joshua (Sari), Hannah and Noah Friedman, and Zachary Poll, and many cousins and dear friends in Canada, US and Israel. Rachel was born in a displaced person’s camp in St. Ottilien, Germany. At the age of two, she moved to La Paz, Bolivia, with her parents. Five years later, in 1953 the family immigrated to Canada and settled in Montreal, where Rachel completed her education with a degree in English Literature (BA 1970) and a Diploma in Education in 1972, both from McGill University. In 1976, Rachel moved to Boston where she raised her children, studied communications, and worked for Facing History and Ourselves, an organization which builds curriculum and professional development for educators to teach about the Holocaust and genocide. Rachel and Jim moved to Montreal in the summer of 2014 to be closer to family as she struggled with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Rachel was a teacher, writer, artist, and a published poet. She loved family, friends, words, witty repartee, and Jewish traditions. Special thanks to Rachel’s ALS doctors and teams in both Boston (Dr. Seward Rutkove, Dr. Robert Thomas and the Beth Israel Hospital ALS Clinic) and Montreal (Dr. Angela Genge and the Neuro ALS Clinic), CLSC Metro, particularly Valerie Vachon, Respiratory Technician, and her caregivers Roseanne, Grace, Rhobie, Michelle, and Susan. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Tuesday, January 20 at 12 noon. Burial in Israel, on Wednesday, January 21. Shiva in Boston. A gathering to honour Rachel will be held in Montreal (details to follow). Bess Cooper

COOPER, Bess (née Nisenbaum). Peacefully, on Tuesday, January 20, 2015. Beloved wife of the late Louis. Loving mother and mother-in-law of Stephen and Donna, Dr. Ethel Cooper-Rosen and Mark Rosen of Halifax. Cherished grandmother of Emilie and Stephanie Cooper; Dr. Lauren and Dan MacDonald, and Dr. Brendan Rosen. Proud great-grandmother of Jackson. Special cousin of Bess and the late Sam Faierman, Ethel and the late Joe Zigman, the late Dave and the late Sarah Tendler. Bess will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her many cousins and friends. Dr. Andrea Joy Cohen

On Saturday, January 24, 2015, after a courageous battle with cancer. Devoted and cherished daughter of Florence (Goffman) and the late Abe Cohen. She will be sadly missed by her aunt Ruth Nadler and her uncle Isaac Petrushka, and by her many cousins. Special thanks to her devoted friends who supported her throughout her struggle, Dr. Sheila Jacob, Susan Shore, Dr. Marcia Gillman, Dr. Aline Levy and Geneviève Roy, and to her cousins, Tima and Gregory Bordan, and Alan and Sheryl Goffman. Cherished grandmother of Sara and Elizabeth Waitzer. Predeceased by her siblings and their spouses, Isidore and Leah Finkelstein, Ethel and Moe Finkelstein, Lil and Irving Nowak, Rose and Charlie Schwartz, and Ann Finkelstein. Always a gentle, kind, loving woman; Edith will be greatly missed by her family, friends and all of those whose lives she touched. David Nencel

David Nencel, survivor of the Holocaust who had a great love for Israel. He was 100% Mensch. In his 98 years he had many challenges but also much happiness. A special human being who was passionate about humankind and shared his passion in discussions with those around him. He was sharp, witty and wise. Beloved husband of the late Gerda Rosner Nencel; their life together was filled with love and care. The importance family had in his life was felt by his daughters Lorraine and Debra Nencel. He was adored by his grandchildren Gabriel and Mara Calvo. He was an amazing brother to Avraham Nencel and his wife Rivka, and their children Mordechai, Ronnie and Ofer Nencel and their families. They were proof of the meaning of brotherly love. David will be fondly remembered by Gerda Rosner`s children Lee and Michael White Debbie and Marty Robins Joyce and Nussie Vineberg Myron and Shelley Rosner And their 14 Grandchildren and 8 Great Grandchildren In the last years of his life he was cared for and loved by Shereen Floyd and Suzi and Arnie Lipes his first cousins. They helped him to reach the end of his life in dignity. We love you for this.

Harry Adler

ADLER, Harry. Sadly, Harry left us on Wednesday, January 21, 2015, just after his 92nd birthday. Adoring husband of the late Mollie Finesilver Adler. Much loved father and father-in-law of Ricki Adler Goldstein and Jack Shlien, Iris Adler and Sherman Teichman. Loving grandfather of Lisa Goldstein and Evan Savelson, Carrie and Peter Mazoff, and Nathaniel Teichman. Proud Poppa of Jamie, Dylan, and Paige. Beloved brother and brother-in-law of Michael and June Adler, Oscar and Marsha Adler, Naomi and the late Mac Adler, the late Eli and the late Buddy Adler, the late Nellie and the late Sam Feldman, the late Dave and the late Shirley Adler. Step-brother and brother-in-law of the late Magda and the late Max Sperling, the late Munci and the late Romek Faber. Brother-in-law of Sylvia and the late Saul Finesilver, and the late Bill and the late Frances Finesilver. He is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends who will miss him greatly. The family gratefully acknowledges the dedicated staff of Mt. Sinai Hospital, especially Dr. Linda Klien, and caregivers Cora, Nora, Daisy, Lala and Jennifer for service above and beyond the call of duty.
