Edward Schachter
SCHACHTER, Edward. It is with great regret that we announce the passing of Edward (Avraham) Schachter after a brief illness on Tuesday, September 29, 2015, at his home. Eddy was born in a small town near Prague Czechoslovakia in 1931. Survived by his dear sister Frida Lebovitz and his loving niece Esther Hecht, all of Haifa Israel. Predeceased by his sister Sarah Rivka Oratch. His parents Yoel and Esther Schachter, his younger brothers, Shimon and Yitzchak, and the majority of his immediate family perished tragically in the Holocaust. He will be fondly remembered by his many other nieces and nephews and extended family in Israel and U.S.A. Eddy came to Montreal in 1948 and built a number of enterprises and countless friendships. He dedicated his life to helping others, with a special focus on children and their needs. He was known as the “Candyman” of Tifereth Beth David Jerusalem Synagogue, and brought smiles to thousands of children’s faces. His good work under the banner of the Honor Aid Society will never be forgotten by the multitude of people that he helped and supported Funeral service took place from Paperman & Sons, in Montreal on Wednesday, September 30. Burial will take place at the Har Hamenuhot Cemetery, gush 31 in Jerusalem on Thursday, October 1 at approximately 5 p.m. Shiva at his sister’s home in Israel. Due to the festival of Succoth commences Monday evening, October 5. Eddy was a child survivor – kept alive by a variety of incredible acts of kindness by his countrymen and a series of miracles, amidst the horrors that surrounded him in those terrible times. May his memory be a blessing for us all.
