Allan Raymond
RAYMOND, Allan. 1922 - 2012. Peacefully, after a life well lived, he succumbed to cancer on Friday, March 9, 2012, with his family by his side. Beloved husband of Bess Mayman. Devoted father of Glenda and Gary. Loving grandfather of Veronica. Dear brother and brother-in-law of Jimmy and Shirley. Allan will be sadly missed by his nephews and niece, Neil and Frances, Lorne and John, and by Bess’s daughters, Julie, Valerie, Marilyn and Barbara and their families, as well as all those whose lives he touched over his lifetime. Allan was born in Lithuania and arrived in Montreal in 1928. He was active in the Royal Canadian Air Force as an air frame mechanic during WW ll and was stationed in Europe. He obtained a B.Com. from McGill University, then had a successful career as an insurance broker; his motto was “Your agent for life”. As an avid collector and historian, he was deeply involved with many prominent organizations including the Montreal Jewish Historical Society, the Westmount Historical Association, the St. James Literary Society, the MMFA, Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, and the Jewish Public Library, where he donated a vast collection of historical material to the archives for future reference by students and researchers. He delivered a series of illustrated lectures dealing with Canadian Judaica at numerous institutions and conducted research for the Montreal Gazette's Great Montreal Walks as well as for the television documentary Six Decades. Allan will not be forgotten. Special thanks to the home caregivers and the doctors and staff of the Jewish General and Mount Sinai Hospitals for their devotion.
