Douglas William Brownstein

Douglas died after a brave battle with an insidious disease, early morning December 22, 2012. Beloved son of Rose Stein-Brownstein and Irwin Brownstein (Ghislaine Valois). Brother of Barbara Brownstein. Devoted friend of Mirko and Claudia Djurovich, Charles and Alissa Gelber, Steven and Brigitte Steinwold, Larry and Terry Linetsky, Jais and Arlene Cohen, Maria and Miranda Stavrides, and special friend of Dany Cortez. He loved children, particularly those of his friends. He took a particular joy in playing Santa at his friend’s annual Christmas parties, and delighted the children with presents and laughter. Douglas will be missed by his family, many friends and all of those whose lives he touched. Born on June 23, 1959, Doug was an incredible intellect and an avid reader who could joyously converse on almost any subject. Gregarious by nature, Doug was adept at playing the role of playful scoundrel and ‘bon vivant’ as well as a serious commentator on world affairs. He loved life and enjoyed holding court at his favorite restaurant, the Rib n’ Reef where he would order everything on the menu just so his table mates could experience the joy of gourmet. Incredibly generous with money and spirit, Doug seldom missed an opportunity to help those in need, or lend a sympathetic ear to any who needed one. During the course of his illness he began a blog that eventually reached hundreds of readers who were transfixed with his messages of hope, yearning for life, and battling with despair. He never lost sight of who he was and remained an incredibly loyal and giving friend despite his internal struggles. He is a void that won’t be replaced. The family would like to thank his noble doctors, Jeffrey Barkun, Petr Kavan, David Melnychuk, Thierry Muanza and Brian Blicher; as well as their wonderful staff, Jodi Baron, Rita Mete, Antoinetta Valiante, Sherry Hogan and Rita Berberian, for their exceptional efforts and compassion.
